It is often used in advanced science/technical courses. Professor Ken Bowman originally developed this text for the laboratory portion of an undergraduate course on Physical Climatology, but his emphasis on fundamental concepts and practical topics helps students write programs for other classes or for their research. This primer is aimed at beginning programmers, not experienced C or Fortran programmers who are new to IDL.

  • SQL as implemented by Oracle(tm) DBMS version 7.
  • PL/SQL A procedural language extension to SQL used in Oracle(tm) DBMS version 7.
  • The revised ISO standard also called SQL92. (really huge, contains grammar rules! Have a thought for the poor developpers of interpreters or compilers for this one...).
  • IDL The OMG Interface Definition Language is the language the interface between objects client and objects servers. Thanks a lot to all the people who sent me the SQL3 BNF. Due to the lack of practical interest for this standard "grand bazar" of the SQL family, we postpone the generation of the corresponding BNF-web documents up to a day where SQL3 will effectively take-off.

This course has finished. However, the source codes developed in the hands-on 3-day class are available online . (Note, this will be of limited use without in-class instruction and/or the RSI training manual.) If you are interested in this or other visualization-based courses (IDL, Python, Houdini, AVS, etc.), please contact the instructor below.
    Overview
The ANU Supercomputer Facility Vizlab is offering a 3-day intermediate-level course in the scientific visualization and programming language, IDL . Many people use IDL to manipulate array/image data and create basic plots. The focus of this course is to create powerful interactive IDL programs using widgets and object-oriented programming techniques. Course participants will learn:
    • about IDL structures and pointers using IDL widgets to create custom graphical-user-interface (GUI) applications [focus topic] the object-graphics paradigm introduced in IDL 5.0 [focus topic] object-oriented programming in IDL
    • to call external C or Fortran codes from within IDL (if participants are interested)
The intense hands-on course will be held on 18-20 November 2002. As enrolment numbers are limited, participants will be chosen from amongst available applicants based on suitability and to ensure that a cross-section of ANU's IDL users are represented. The closing date for applications is Thursday 31 October 2002.

They are NOT case-sensitive: foo, Foo and FOO are all the same variable. Note that the default type of integer is only a 2-byte integer. If you want a long integer you have to remember to ask for it. IDL is a dynamically typed language. That means that you don't have to define your variables or say which variable is which type at the start of your program. You can say

    STARTING TO PROGRAM IN IDL
Written by Virginia Bluth Last updated: April 4, 2003
Writing basic IDL programs In this first part, you will start writing simple IDL programs. If you have any experience with Fortran or C, you are that much ahead of the game, but if you do not, you will catch on quickly enough. IDL is very user-friendly. It has a very useful and thorough help file. And there are some very useful links on the web, most notably, Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming at http://www.dfanning.com or try the links at http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/other_url.html or just try typing in IDL at google.com.
You will try the interactive mode and the programming mode of IDL. You will write a program which uses the building blocks of imperative program - commands, IF-statements, DO-loops, FOR-loops, etc.. Mostly, you should try to have fun with all of the neat options that IDL allows you to use in your plots.
To Get Started: The important thing to remember is that there is nothing horrendous that you can do the computer as long as you stop yourself before you hit the computer with something hard. Probably the worst thing you could do is delete the entire program you just spent 8 hours writing and debugging. This can be easily avoided by getting into the habit of saving your work regularly (like every 15 minutes - 5 minutes is usually recommended, but probably not worth the effort). You might also want to keep a backup. You can do this most easily by typing: cp lastversion.pro

Report #1 May 6, 2003 Jennifer Novak Objectives During the first two weeks of Processing Satellite Imagery for Air Quality Analysis under the direction of Dr. Rudy Husar, I familiarized myself with the basic tools and procedures that I will utilize throughout my research. First, I complete several ENVI (Environment for Visualizing Images) tutorials, which introduced me to the many features and tools of this software program. ENVI software is used for data visualization and analysis of satellite images. Next, I warped, or georeferenced, satellite images using Sean Raffuse’s, a graduate of Washington University, IDL program. Then, I began learning the computer programming language IDL (Interactive Data Language) through modifying and composing programs using IDL. Results I was able to successfully utilize current IDL programs and compose IDL programs. I successfully executed Sean Raffuse's warping program for the days May 16, 2003 through May 28, 2003. This program entitled 'Batch_GOES_Warp' took raw satellite images and georeferenced these images. Georeferencing, or warping, is the process of flattening the images and referencing them in terms of the earth’s longitude and latitude coordinates. I modified Sean Raffuse's time series program, which collected the warped images, put them into temporal order and then reformatted them into a file that could be read by the ENVI software. The purpose of this program is to allow the user to collect a batch, or group, of files from a single day or even multiple days and assemble them in numerical order into a single ENVI file. With this new ENVI file the user can use the many tools and features of the ENVI software to analyze each satellite image.

    Interactive Data Language (IDL)
IDL is a complete computing environment for the interactive analysis and visualization of data. IDL integrates a powerful, array-oriented language with numerous mathematical analysis and graphical display techniques. Programming in IDL is a time-saving alternative to programming in FORTRAN or C. You can explore data interactively using IDL commands and then create complete applications by writing IDL programs.
    Features of IDL
    • IDL is a complete, structured language that can be used both interactively and to create sophisticated functions, procedures, and applications.
    • Operators and functions work on entire arrays (without using loops), simplifying interactive analysis and reducing programming time.
    • Immediate compilation and execution of IDL commands provides instant feedback and "hands-on" interaction.

    introduction
Welcome to the home page for the informal IDL seminar at Steward Observatory. This class will introduce the basic functionality of IDL to handle problems that are encountered almost daily in scientific research. We will learn to use IDL's powerful built-in tools and publically available IDL libraries to solve problems quickly and accurately. The class is designed for graduate students or advanced undergraduates who possess basic familiarity with the Linux/UNIX operating system and computer programming. If you are totally unfamiliar with IDL and want to know why you should learn it I highly recommend the Guide to IDL for Astronomers written by Robert O'Connell. Take a look especially at all of Section I and parts 1 and 14 of Section II. Throughout this tutorial we will be using IDL in a simple xterm (rather than the graphical mode, idlde ). Note that a set of IDL 6.0 reference manuals are available in the Steward Observatory Library on reserve.

      What the Software Does
The MODIS Swath-to-Grid Toolbox (MS2GT) is a set of software tools that reads HDF-EOS files containing MODIS swath data and produces flat binary files containing gridded data in a variety of map projections. MS2GT can produce a seamless output grid from multiple input files corresponding to successively acquired, 5-minute MODIS "scenes". MS2GT consists of three perl programs that make calls to several standalone IDL and C programs: mod02.pl which reads , or Level 1b files, mod10_l2.pl which reads snow cover files, and mod29.pl which reads sea ice files. All three Perl programs can optionally read files for geolocation information. In addition, mod02.pl can extract "ancillary" data (such as illumination and viewing angles) from files.
