About ATV.PRO A aron's interactive front end for idl TV
Contents:
What atv is, and why I wrote it. Back when I started using IDL a lot, around 1998, one thing I wanted which didn't really exist at the time was an interactive image-display tool optimized for viewing astronomical CCD images. There are a lot of great image viewing programs out there, like SAOimage , which are usually designed to work with IRAF or as stand-alone applications (see here for a list of other image viewers), but for working in IDL it would be far easier to have a display routine written as an IDL procedure. In order to learn how to use IDL widgets, I started writing an image viewer which would do some of the things I wanted. It seemed like something that would be useful to other IDL users, so I made it available here. The program is written entirely in IDL. It's very easy to use within an IDL session and it's also very simple to add new routines, buttons, menus, or whatever. It looks a lot like SAOimage or DS9, so if you're used to using those programs, then you'll probably get used to ATV quickly. The program is still in development and doesn't have all the features that you might want, but it's getting there. For detailed instructions on how to use atv, see the

McClain , NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., USA A primary objective of the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) program [ Hooker et al ., 1992] at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is to provide rapid and easy access to all SeaWiFS data products and exploit the data set to its maximum potential. To accomplish this, the project provides extensive documentation and a variety of services to the user community, including the SeaWiFS Data Analysis System (SeaDAS). This philosophy and approach is the result of the research community's experience with the proof-of-concept Nimbus-7/Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) mission. The CZCS data set was not exploited by the research community until several years after the CZCS ceased operating in 1976 because the data and processing code were generally not available. Processing software for CZCS data was developed by individual researchers. Unix and PC versions of one such package, SEAPAK [ McClain et al ., 1989], was distributed to the research community beginning in 1989 and provided the foundations for the SeaDAS development effort.

    CORBA Technology and the Java TM Platform
    The Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, v1.3, provides a CORBA Object Request Broker (ORB) and two CORBA programming models that utilize the Java CORBA ORB and Internet InterORB Protocol (IIOP). This topic discusses these options for creating and distributing CORBA technology. CORBA technology is an integral part of the Java 2 platform. It consists of an Object Request Broker (ORB) written in Java (with a small bit of native code), APIs for the RMI programming model , and APIs for the IDL programming model
    How does J2SE leverage CORBA
    Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) technology is the open standard for heterogeneous computing. CORBA complements the Java TM platform by providing a distributed objects framework, services to support that framework, and interoperability with other languages. The Java platform complements CORBA by providing "Write Once, Run Anywhere TM " portability, a highly productive implementation environment, and a very robust platform. By combining the Java platform with CORBA and other key enterprise technologies, the Java 2 Platform is the ultimate platform for distributed technology solutions. CORBA standards provide the proven, interoperable infrastructure to the Java platform. IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) manages the communication between the object components that power the system. The Java platform provides a portable object infrastructure that works on every major operating system. CORBA provides the network transparency, Java provides the implementation transparency.

    http://astron.berkeley.edu/~robishaw/comp/idlfast.html
      Straight from RSI... how to make IDL run faster!
      TOPIC: Programmers can significantly decrease execution time and memory usage by following these tips and tricks for efficient IDL programming: DISCUSSION: 1. IDL supplies a number of built-in functions and procedures to perform common operations. These system-supplied functions have been optimized and are faster than writing the equivalent operations in IDL with loops and subscripting. In particular, array operations that are performed on the entire array are faster than the equivalent operations performed in a loop on single elements of an array. A common operation is to find the sum of the elements in an array or subarray. Using the IDL supplied TOTAL function is 10 times faster than summing the elements with a FOR loop.
      2. The order in which an expression is evaluated can have a significant effect on program speed. Consider the following expression:
        B = A * 16. / MAX(A)

      This statement multiplies every element in A by 16 and then divides each element by the value of the maximum element of A. The number of operations required is twice the number of elements in A.
      A much faster way of computing the same result is:
        B = 16./MAX(A) * A

    "Before IDL, I had basically given up on programming and left it to others. It took weeks or months to try out new methods and see the results… This was the tool I had been dreaming of. I just took off with IDL…" Dr. Amir-Homayoon Najmi
    Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory IDL, the Interactive Data Language, is the ideal software for data analysis, visualization, and cross-platform application development. IDL integrates a powerful, array-oriented language with numerous mathematical analysis and graphical display techniques, thus giving you incredible flexibility. A few lines of IDL can do the job of hundreds of lines of C or Fortran, without losing flexibility or performance. A fourth-generation language, IDL is radically more compact than C or Fortran. Using IDL, tasks that require days or weeks of programming with traditional languages can be accomplished in hours. Users can explore data interactively using IDL commands and then create complete applications by writing IDL programs.
    IDL combines all of the tools you need for any type of project, from "quick-look," interactive analysis and display to large-scale commercial programming projects. Thousands of technical professionals use IDL every day to rapidly develop algorithms, interfaces, and powerful visualizations and quickly crunch through large numerical problems.

    Coronal Loop Identification
    by Jong Kwan -Jake- Lee

    Introduction
    Understanding solar magnetism is the key to understanding solar activity. Since the Sun's corona contains loop structures that trace out the solar magnetic field, the solar magnetic field can be studied by observing the coronal loop structures. In order to aid studies of the solar magnetic field, a new automated solar coronal loop identification technique, which is called the Oriented Connectivity Method (OCM), is described below. (This work has been supported by NASA's Office of Space Science - Solar and Heliospheric Physics Supporting Research and Technology Program and was submitted, in part, as a Master's Thesis in Computer Science at UAH.)
    Some of the programs (e.g., the dynamic stereoscopy analysis [ ] and the width variation analysis [ ] of the coronal loops) that partially address coronal loop identification involves manual tracing of the coronal loop structures. However, the manual methods are problematic since they do not provide singular solutions. The automated coronal loop detection algorithm described here provides singular solutions to determine the loop structures.
    We present the Oriented Connectivity Method (the automated coronal loop identification technique) and a semi-manual tracing method. We provide IDL programming codes for both methods. Additionally, we provide another IDL programming code for modeling 3D magnetic fields using the dipole model from a MDI magnetogram.
