Bill Borden Becomes the First Georgia Resident to Complete the 1,151 Mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome 14 Days, 4 Hours, 10 Minutes and 14 Seconds Not too long when you consider all of the mishaps along the Iditarod Trail. Bill Borden, first Georgia resident to complete the 1,151 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome, encountered many tests of faith along the way. Only 200 miles into the race, Bill broke his gangline in a crash with a tree on the Happy River Steps, a particularly notorious section of the trail. This left him with only his two wheel dogs, Lookout and Smoke, to push the sled up the incline to Rainy Pass, a distance of about five miles before another musher helped tow him with their team. The other 14 dogs were reunited with the wheels dogs after about 12 miles of mushing on their own. The dogs were encountered in a perfect trot crossing Finger Bear Lake by a snowmachiner. Sandy McKee, and Rick Horstman fellow rookie mushers, helped Bill get the dogs lined out among the trees and then left him to reassemble the team. After reaching Rainy Pass, Bill realized his back was severely injured in the wreck and was forced to take his 24-hour layover this early in the race. By doing so, some

Iditarod dog sled race The Iditarod Sled Dog Race commemorates a frantic attempt to save lives in Nome, Alaska during a diphtheria outbreak in 1925. In 1925 a desperate race was run to save lives in the icebound community of Nome, Alaska. A diphtheria epidemic had broken out, and no serum was available to treat the disease. Frantic telegraph messages for help were sent to all of the neighboring communities in an effort to locate the closest available supply of the life-saving serum. Hope began to plummet when it was learned that the closest supply was in Anchorage, about a thousand miles away. No airplanes were available to fly the serum to Nome. It was decided that the fastest way to get the serum to Nome would be to ship it by rail to the town of Nenana, over 650 miles from Nome, then have a strong team of huskies waiting to pick up the antitoxin and take it from there. This first Iditarod "race" was actually a relay of many different dog teams and mushers from different villages along the route. The much-needed serum arrived in just over 127 hours, in time to save hundreds of lives. The modern Iditarod race, held in early March, is said to be 1049 miles long. The 1049-mile figure is symbolic, representing a thousand mile race in the 49th state. There are actually two different routes that are used in alternating years, and they are closer to 1200 miles in length.

The much needed serum was raced from Nenana to Nome by dog team. Twenty teams relayed the medicine 674 miles in 127.5 hours! Today this historic event is commemorated with the world famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race. The competition starts in Anchorage on the first Saturday in March. The first musher arrives in Nome approximately 9-11 days later. Teams continue to arrive day and night for the next week and a half. In Nome, activities include a reindeer potluck, arts & crafts shows, Iditarod awards banquets, an opportunity to "meet the mushers," the world's largest basketball tournament the Iditarod Basketball Tournament (over 50 teams in one location), the Ice Golf Classic and a dart tournament. Be sure to make hotel reservations in advance or phone the visitor center for housing assistance. History of the Red Lantern During the days of Alaska sled dog freighting and mail carrying, dog drivers relied on a series of roadhouses between their village destinations. Since these mushers ventured out in all types of weather they decided to use a "flight plan." Word was relayed ahead that a musher and team were on the trail, and a kerosene lamp was lit and hung outside the roadhouse. It not only helped the dog driver find his destination at night, but more importantly, it signified that a team or teams were somewhere out on the trail. The lamp was not extinguished until the musher safely reached his destination.

The Iditarod: the First Day of the "Last Great Race" I t started three-quarters of a century ago with a serum run from Anchorage to the coastal community of Nome in Northwest Alaska. There were no roads then between the two communities more than 1,000 miles apart, and there are none today. A train took the serum as far as Nenana. It was carried for the last 674 miles by dogsled. A relay of 20 mushers responded to the medical emergency a diphtheria epidemic. T he photos on this page are from the 1996 race. On March 2nd, 1996, about 900 dogs and their mushers gathered on Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage to set off on a similar trip. This time it was simply for the adventure of it. Several were hoping to win some of the $300,000 prize money in the 24th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race but most could not expect to even meet their expenses. (A local sports writer referred to $100,000 dog kennels in a story about a musher he described as an exception to that trend.) O n the first day of the race, 60 mushers - most of them Alaskans but some from as far away as Norway, Italy and Japan - raced 20 miles from downtown Anchorage to Eagle River.

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race On March 3, 2001 at 10:00AM, the most famous sled dog race in the word begins again in Anchorage! That's actually not quite correct - the start tomorrow is only ceremonial, and the teams will only be running 11 miles, to the Campbell Airstrip in South Anchorage. The real start of the race is normally at Wasilla, about 40 miles north of Anchorage. However, the extremely mild winter we're having this year has caused major problems for Iditarod organizers, and there was talk only a few weeks ago that the race might have to be cancelled. High temperatures, winds, and rain are still wreaking havoc with the trail, and the start of the race has been moved another 25 miles further north, to Willow, where trail conditions are still acceptable. Following the short run in Anchorage, the dogs will be trucked to Willow, where the restart will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 4. The name Iditarod is an Anglicized version of the Ingalik and Holikachuk Indian name for the Iditarod River. It meant "distant place." The discovery of gold in 1908 resulted in the establishment of the community of Iditarod. Although the race trail is officially 1,049 miles, that is just for simplification and PR purposes (Alaska being the 49th state). There are actually two trails, used alternately. This year, mushers will run on the Southern Trail, which is 1161 miles when the snow conditions allow for an Anchorage start. This year it will be about 1065 miles.
