Pacific Resources for Education and Learning offers A Focus on Vocabulary , a free online resource on vocabulary development for young children. This booklet, which bridges research and practice, begins with a definition of vocabulary and explores the following issues of vocabulary development: why vocabulary is important in reading comprehension, what "knowing" a word means, key instructional strategies, and issues related to vocabulary development for English language learners (ELLs). The booklet is written by Ms. Fran Lehr, Ms. Jean Osborn, and Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert. Lehr and Osborn are known for their writing, which elaborates on scholarly work by providing explanatory information and examples to clarify the classroom implications and applications of that research.

Students of English as a foreign language improve their vocabulary when they read any of the web pages which are in English or write a task or assignment of some interactive web sites. Nevertheless, a good deal of vocabulary acquisition material is carried on the web, either for idioms or for single words, usually included in more general sites. Some of them are highly interactive while others are not, although they are equally practical and efficient. We should not forget, finally, the different dictionaries available on the net.

With the idiom there comes a definition, an example dialogue and The Weekly Idiom Index , with a complete list of all past idioms and their links. There is also the possibility to listen to a brief dialogue which includes the idiom.
Dave Sperling's ESL Idiom page offers a collection of idioms, with their definitions and examples.

Every quarter I will develope a new theme to help you build up your vocabulary. I have organised it to be a thematic approach to enable learners to understand the relationship between various words. If you are a beginner I advise you to learn the basic words at the beginning and only move on if or when they have fully understood these words, intermediate and advanced learners should also study the build-up words and dialogues at the end of each section. Whenever possible each group of new words is introduced using pictures. To see the words associated with the picture place your mouse cursor over the picture. Try it now! Example:- The words associated with the picture are shown, for a short time, with their plural form in brackets - (s) on the end of the word means add an 's' to form the plural. Say the word out loud and try to remember it after the dialogue box has disappeared. Once you are confident with your understanding of the vocabulary check out the games and tests for that section.
