How to Identify Birds
Are you amazed at how quickly birders can identify birds? Actually, it's just like getting to know your human neighbors. When you move into a new neighborhood everyone is a stranger, but soon you learn to tell people apart as you unconsciously catalog their characteristics. Their habits, shape, styles of walking, and "habitats" become familiar enough that you can recognize each neighbor immediately, even at a distance. Paying attention to individual differences can help you identify birds, too. You can recognize many birds simply by noting their shapes, even if seen only in silhouette. Other useful characteristics are a bird's posture, size (easiest to judge if you use familiar birds as a size reference), flight pattern and/or head-on flight profile, and the kind of habitat in which the bird was seen. Start by learning to identify general groups of birds- warblers, flycatchers, hawks, owls, wrens- whose members all share certain similarities. As your observation skills improve, familiarize yourself with the field marks- colored or patterned areas on the bird's body, head, and wings- that help distinguish species.

8. Golden Gate Raptor Observatory
Fall hawk watch. Volunteer needs, photograph album, raptor quiz, and information on identifying birds.
http://www.ggro.org/
Every autumn, thousands of migrating birds of prey appear over the Golden Gate near San Francisco, California Why are they here? How are they doing? ... do they go?
That's just what we're here to learn...
The GGRO is a program of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in cooperation with the National Park Service. On Saturdays and Sundays during September and October (weather permitting) the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory sponsors a "HawkTalk" at noon and a banding demonstration at 1:00PM on Hawk Hill . They usually, but not always have a recently banded Raptor that they release during the "Banding Demo".
The Golden Gate Raptor Observatory (GGRO) is three staff members and more than 250 community volunteers, all dedicated to studying the autumn hawk migration. The GGRO's guiding philosophy is that public involvement is a critical, yet often ignored component of long-term wildlife conservation. The GGRO's mission is to inspire the preservation of California raptor populations The GGRO was formed in the early 1980s to track the Golden Gate migration, an annual flight of tens of thousands of hawks, eagles falcons, and vultures - birds collectively called "raptors."

Birding.com can help you identify wild birds. Here are some tips to makeidentifying birds easier. First ask How big is the bird?
http://www.birding.com/Bird_Identification.asp
birding.com Learning to identify birds is fun and frustrating. A field guide can help you attach a name to most of the birds you see. Field guides are books with pictures and descriptions of the birds. A field guide typically shows birds of just one country or even one region of a country. You will soon learn that many of the birds you see just can't be identified with 100% certainty. But with practice, you should at least be able to narrow your ID down to the correct family was it a Sparrow or a Thrush? You are about to discover that birders seem to have given a name to every inch on a bird's body. Do you know where to find a bird's wing bars, primaries, superciliary and malar stripe? These diagrams will help:
Parts of a Bird
Head

Body

Wing
Glossary Use this Glossary to look up words that describe parts of a bird.
Here are some tips to make identifying birds easier. First ask "How big is the bird?" Is it as big as a sparrow, a robin, a pigeon, a chicken or an ostrich? Is the bird fat or skinny, long or short. Look at each part of the bird. Is its bill short or long, thick or thin, curved or straight? How about the tail? What shape is it? Is it forked? Are the bird's wings pointed or curved, long or short?
After you do all this, then notice the main colors of the bird. This sounds crazy, but it works. If you do not believe it, turn to the Roadside silhouettes inside the front cover of your Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Birds or Peterson Field Guide to Western Birds. With practice, you will be able to recognize all these birds just by their silhouette.

Lists of birds than can be expected in many local parks and other reserves are readily available. There are beginner's lessons and outings by birdwatching groups who provide information on how to observe and record, and most importantly, how to identify any bird seen while totally enjoying yourself. Many excellent illustrated field guides are available . One book dedicated to the more commonly asked questions about birds is the Green Guide- Birds of Australia by Peter Rowland (1998). Identifying Birds
By now you're familiar with the organization of field guides and with some of the different families of birds. You have binoculars and can spot an object with your naked eye and then look at it through the binoculars without having to search for ten minutes. Most importantly, you've avoided the frustration - so far - of trying to associate a particular name with a particular bird. Now, to accomplish this feat, let's go over some helpful techniques for learning to identify families and species of birds. The first thing to remember is: don't make bird identification hard on yourself. There are two general rules to keep in mind during your first few months of Birdwatching: 1) eliminate as many species as possible from consideration before you ever attempt to identify anything, and 2) the bird is most likely a species that commonly occurs in your area, not some strange exotic that blew in from a thousand miles away. These rules are closely tied to one another, and they focus on making birding easier by reducing the number of choices you have to consider. For example, in Florida there is only one type of hummingbird that occurs regularly, the ruby-throated hummingbird (verify this from your field guide, if you like). Several other hummingbirds have been seen in Florida on occasion, but why worry about trying to identify these uncommon vagrants until you have more experience with our most common species?
