That's the amount Gov. Kempthorne has recommended the legislature increase salaries for Idaho's public school employees. Additionally, the governor proposes the state cover only half the cost of all salary increments. IEA President Kathy Phelan: "IEA members across this state are sorely disappointed by this proposal. The truth is that a 1% increase in pay means most public school educators will actually see their take home pay decrease next year. The governor's proposal is insufficient, and the IEA will be asking legislators to do much more." Idaho State University programs were most recently reviewed in February of 1997 by the Idaho Professional Standards Commission using the NASDTEC standards in place at the time of the review. Based on evidence reviewed during their visit, the state evaluation team concluded that all Idaho State University College of Education programs met or exceeded standards, and all programs were recommended for approval and subsequently approved by the Professional Standards Commission and the Idaho State Board of Education. In spring of 2000, the Idaho State Board of Education adopted the Idaho Standards for the Initial Certification of School Professionals as the standards for state approval of educator preparation programs. The Idaho State University College of Education is the first institution in the state to be reviewed using the new standards for program approval. The Context of Program Approval at Idaho State University Educator preparation at Idaho State University represents a university-wide collaborative effort involving four colleges and 25 departments. At the undergraduate level, teacher education candidates major in the College of Education while taking secondary teaching majors and minors and elementary education components in departments in other colleges. Undergraduate programs in health education and graduate programs in speech pathology, education of the hearing impaired, and school counseling are housed in the College of Health Professions. Teachers submit portfolios, student work samples, videotapes, and analyses of their classroom teaching and student learning. More than 4,800 teachers have successfully completed the grueling, yearlong application process so far, earning praise from President Clinton for "being challenged to fulfill their greatest potential."
