Introduction
Collaboration is constantly promoted as a valued activity for educators, librarians, and social service professionals. Shared resources, as well as shared responsibilities, can lead to reduced costs and positive outcomes for a collaborative project. For libraries, this could mean expanded services and greater visibility in the community. The proliferation of digital information means that no one agency or entity can hold all the necessary information needed by our society. In addition, we want and need to provide full access to all people, including those with disabilities, who live in rural or remote regions, or who have an economic disadvantage. The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) promotes the use of technology for sharing information between libraries and community agencies. LSTA funds are made available to state library agencies, with subgrants to public, academic, research, school and special libraries within each state. Appendix I provides an overview of LSTA projects during a two-year period. Primary goals are to provide extended library services and increased access to information for children and youth within their communities . This list of projects is only a portion of the 275 grants awarded nationally through LSTA . Other grants are awarded for collection development, technology enhancements, and collaboration between museums and libraries.

Library News Recent Acquisitions Featured Titles Contact Information ... Teachers' Corner: Evaluating Websites Library News Summer Reading List The library is compiling a summer reading list for students from all grade levels to take home with them in June. We would like to invite all teachers and parents to provide us with copies of any summer reading lists or recommendations. We hope to make as many of these titles as possible available at the Carver Memorial Library, where lists can also be found over the summer.
Magazines
We would like to remind teachers to return any magazines that have been routed to them throughout the year back to the library. The library does archive many of the magazines we receive for future classroom projects and we like to have a complete collection whenever possible. At this time we also welcome any feedback from staff and community members as to the magazines we are currently receiving in the library. If you have any suggestions for periodicals you would like us to get, or think there are any subscriptions we should drop, please let us know so that we can take that into consideration as we begin next year's ordering process.
Book Club
This year's summer book club selection is The Fortress of Solitude

Too Much Fat, Meat, Chicken, Cheese; Virtually No Non-Dairy Alternatives The National School Lunch Program gets poor marks in nutrition according to a new report released today by the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). In a survey conducted in August, PCRM dietitians learned that only 1 of 12 elementary school districts interviewed is substituting lower-fat, cholesterol-free plant protein for meat on school menus. And, only one of the school districts routinely offers calcium-rich milk alternatives, a surprising finding given the growing concern with milk as a potential factor in a variety of health problems. The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program that serves 27 million lunches per day. "Our research shows that the National School Lunch Program is failing to routinely serve healthy, low-fat, fiber- and nutrient-rich meals to children," says PCRM dietitian Jen Keller. "While some schools are lowering fat and making healthier vegetarian meals available, not enough have done their homework when it comes to nutrition. Given the sky-high incidences of obesity and related conditions in this country, school menus obviously need some remedial help."

This is the first year Idaho has received such funding. The grants, issued to the University of Idaho College of Education and to North Idaho College are for five years. "Each year we hope to help at least three thousand people statewide find funding for tuition, fees and books so they can pursue higher education," said Scott Clyde, Idaho EOC director at UI. "Lots of people think going back to college is impossible, but thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships are available. Our job is to help them find that money, and help them apply." Three Idaho EOC grants provide about $200,000 a year for five years, funding offices in Coeur d'Alene, Moscow and Boise. In each area, counselors will provide workshops and assist eligible participants with career advice, financial aid information, and assistance to apply for college, university or vocational-technical programs.

$340,000 federal appropriation strengthens national commitment for Center The regional Congressional delegation, in particular United States Senators Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Conrad Burns (R-Mont.) and Congressman Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), worked diligently to secure this special funding to support the Center. In addition to the federal appropriation, Children's Hospital has dedicated $1 million in start-up funding to establish the Center with plans for additional funding in succeeding years.
Promoting the Highest Standards of Ethics and Protections of Patient Rights
"The Center is integral to Children's mission to foster a spirit of inquiry aimed at preventing illness, eliminating disease, and reducing hospitalization and its impact on children and families," said Treuman Katz , president and CEO of Children's. "By addressing the complex ethical issues that affect patients, families, healthcare institutions, and research involving children, the Center will promote the highest standards of medical ethics and protections of patient rights in pediatric research and healthcare. We are extremely grateful for the support of Senators Murray, Burns and Congressman Simpson to make this Center a reality."
