Field Guide to the Bark Beetles of Idaho and Adjacent Regions
Malcolm M. Furniss and James B. Johnson
Agricultural Publications, University of Idaho,
2002, 125 pp.
Price: $19.95
ISBN 1-58803-000-8 This field guide should be of interest to professional and amateur entomologists who live, work, or vacation in the forests of the interior Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, Montana, and British Columbia. Furniss and Johnson have summarized current information on 114 species of Scolytidae: 102 bark beetles and 12 of other habit (ambrosia, cone and clover roots) the forests of Idaho and its neighboring states. They obviously want to capture the imagination of the layperson and the forestry professional. As they say, "Whittling away the bark of a storm-broken or recently killed tree to discover the intricate etchings (galleries) made by bark beetles is an experience similar to splitting rocks in search of fossils." The guide begins with a brief introduction to the collection, identification, biology, ecology, and classification of Scolytidae, followed by a key to the genera, and then each genus is briefly described with keys to its Idaho species. The keys are generally clear and easy to follow, and supplemented by a glossary of technical terms. Information on each species includes its known distribution, hosts, a brief description of the adult, gallery pattern, biology, and a key reference where available. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings of adult insects and gallery patterns, some of which are of historical interest. Perhaps the most useful tool is the "diagnostic host index" at the end, which allows one to home in on the species being observed from information on the host species and the location of the gallery on or in that host.

EPA BROWNFIELDS PROGRAM
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic development to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. On January 11, 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act. Under the Brownfields Law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism.

    Name
Idaho is perhaps the only state to be named as the result of a hoax . When a name was being selected for new territory, eccentric lobbyist George M. Willing suggested "Idaho," an Indian term he claimed meant "gem of the mountains." It was later revealed Willing had made up the name himself, and the original Idaho territory was re-named Colorado because of it. Eventually the controversy was forgotten, and modern-day Idaho was given the made-up name when the

Summary of Informal Meeting for ANSS-IMW Region, 03/28/2001
An informal meeting of participants in the ANSS Intermountain West (IMW) Region was held on 28 March 2001 from 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. The meeting was convened by Walter Arabasz, Regional Coordinator, as an opportune add-on after one of the sessions of a USGS workshop on "Seismic Hazard Mapping in the Intermountain West." Participants [Note: At a WSSPC workshop held earlier the same week in Salt Lake City, I had a chance to discuss ANSS-IMW organizational matters with Doug Bausch of Northern Arizona University, Steve Weiser of the Idaho Bureau of Disaster Services, Roy Breckenridge of the Idaho Geological Survey, and Jim Case of the Wyoming State Geological Survey. Walt Arabasz] Background Information Arabasz gave the following information for general background:
  • The national "Management Plan" for ANSS reportedly is nearly complete and will be posted on the ANSS Web site (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/anss/index.php) after it is delivered to Congress. The FY 2002 funding level for ANSS is uncertain. [President Bush's FY 2002 budget, which will include more details than included in his February budget outline to Congress, is expected to be released in April.]

Original Tribal and Band Names of Idaho's Native Peoples
The Tribes which entered and settled Idaho did not originally call themselves Shoshoni, Bannock, Nez Perce or Coeur d' Alene. These peoples, before the invasion of the Europeans, described themselves by tribal names which are not commonly used today. The people which today are called Nez Perce, from the French meaning "pierced nose", call themselves Nimi'ipuu Coeur d' Alene is another tribe which was incorrectly named by French fur trappers. Coeur d' Alene means possibly "heart-of-the-awl", but the people called themselves Schitsu'umsh The Bannock, which are closely related to the Northern Paiute, called themselves Nimi', Pan a'kwati or Panaite The Shoshoni designated themselves by various names, which confused the daylights out of regimented Europeans. The Shoshoni referred to themselves by whatever primary wild food resource was being harvested by the different bands or family groups, living in different geographic areas. Causing further confusion, multiple names were sometimes attached to the people of a single area, the same name could be found given to the people of widely separated areas, and a single group could be known by a series of names as they traveled from an area identified by one kind of food to another with different harvestable food. An overall name used by the Northern Shoshoni was "
