Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. Idaho. American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Idaho, the "Gem State"
Abbreviation:
ID The state's name is thought to be an Indian name, Ee-dah-hoe, which means "gem of the mountains." Idaho, the 43rd state, joined the U.S. in 1890. Logging as well as mining are big industries in the state. But the state is probably best known for its potatoes. Idaho has a rugged landscape with some of the largest unspoiled natural areas in the country. Idaho is a Rocky Mountains state with exciting scenery and enormous natural resources. Idaho has towering, snow-capped mountain ranges, swirling white rapids, peaceful lakes and steep canyons. The churning waters of Snake River rush through Hells Canyon, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon. Shoshone Falls plunges down rugged cliffs from a height greater than that of Niagara Falls. Idaho is a skier's paradise but also provides excellent opportunities for hikers and campers during the summer.

For Immediate Release / Dec. 5, 2001
Contact: Gene Fadness (208) 334-0339 Commission Proposes Three-Way Split
Of Area Code Relief Is Ordered By FCC
The order retains the existing 208 area code in southwest Idaho and recommends a new area code from Grangeville north to the Canadian border and a new area code from Hagerman east to the Wyoming border. The commission rejected recommendations from the Idaho telecommunications industry that Idaho adopt an "all-services overlay" that would assign the area code to new numbers only. While that plan would not require existing telephone users to change their phone numbers, it would require 10-digit dialing for all local calls. "We agree with the Idaho telecommunications industry that an all-services overlay has several desirable attributes," the commission said. "However, the commission finds it impossible to ignore the testimony of customers, who have indicated their preference for a geographic split with near unanimity." The three-way split received more consideration from the commission after it received written comments and testimony at four public hearings. The commission received 314 written comments and petition signatures from 91 citizens. Twenty-five testified at public hearings.

http://www.idahoptv.org/productions/idahoportrait/adventures/followlc.html
Lewis and Clark's journey across Idaho in September, 1805 was the most difficult part of their entire transcontinental expedition. As they crossed the Bitterroot Mountains, the Corps of Discovery encountered an early snow, downed timber and found little to eat. By the time they emerged from the mountains eleven days later, the men were wet, cold, and starving. Luckily, they encountered friendly Nez Perce Indians who fed the expedition. Despite the hardship, Meriwether Lewis wrote of what would become Idaho, "It is a beautiful, fertile and picturesque country."
Idaho's geography also dashed the explorers' hope of finding an all-water route to the Pacific. After crossing the Lemhi Pass, they found what the Indians called "Big Fish Water." On the banks of what is now known as the Salmon River, William Clark realized it would be suicide to try to take canoes through the rapids of what is now called the River of No Return. In his journal, Clark wrote "the river is almost one continued rapid, the passage with canoes is entirely impossible."
Today, much is the same as when Lewis and Clark first set foot in Idaho. The Salmon River, which dashed their hopes of finding a water route to the Pacific, remains the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states. The vistas, first glimpsed in 1805, are now part of the largest block of wilderness outside of Alaska.

About this course
Geography 355 explores the human and physical geography of the Pacific Northwest. A foundation in the basic geologic structure of the three states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho is followed by an examination of major landforms, climate, and vegetation patterns. We will then discover a variety of things about the human occupation of this region and about different places, involving historical geography, distribution of population, settlement patterns, and the economic and political organization of these three states. This will include the geography of natural resources, agricultural activities, industrial location, transportation systems, and the functioning of urban centers. We will investigate those components of the landscape that we perceive as the built environment, but also look into other cultural elements such as ethnicity, or music and literature, that help to define a regional identity.

Email: nancyh@ellensburg.com Graduate work in geography at the University of Cincinnati (where she met John), was under the tutelage of Bob McNee, in urban/ economic geography. Her thesis advisor was Peter Mounfield, visiting from Aberystwyth, Wales. This was particularly interesting as the Brannen family on her father's side is Welsh. At UC, Nancy had an assistantship in the University Computer Center, and learned from its director, Carl Evert, an electrical engineer, many skills about early computers starting with the IBM 1620, with an attached Calcomp Plotter. This was punched-card days of data input (and output for the 1620)! Leaving there, she returned to Georgia State University and taught for 2 years. She and John were married in 1969, and she joined him at the University of Iowa, where he had been working toward his Ph.D. They left in 1974 for the wilds of Idaho and a shared teaching position in the Geography Department at the University of Idaho. Nancy left there in 1988 to come to CWU. While in Iowa, John's old love for his Brittany hunting dog returned and they got their first Brittany, Wisty. A great natural hunter, pointer, and retriever, Wisty got us involved in pheasant hunting in Iowa. Once in Idaho, a newly forming Brittany club in Spokane, WA attracted our interest and we launched a new hobbycompeting in Pointing Dog Field Trials with our Brittanys. We own the first and third Dual Champion (field and show) Brittanys in Idaho. Nancy also competed in bowling and holds the record of High Series (679) for Women in Moscow, ID.
