The region has experienced booms before, and each re-arranged its geography. We might even mark the initial development boom at some 13-15,000 ago when the first people made it to North America, and in the course of a millennium or two managed to occupy the whole region, at least seasonally. Certainly the Spanish conquest from the south in the 1500s constituted another regional "boom," as did the gold rushes, Mormon settlement of the Great Basin, and the cattle, irrigation, military, and energy booms of the 19th and 20th centuries. Booms, of course, imply busts. Falling global oil prices deflated the last regional boom in the early-1980s, and parts of the West experienced net out-migration - more people leaving than moving in. The office towers of Denver and the subdivisions of Rock Springs went from chock-a-block full to a third empty in just a couple of years. Yet no bust is total; each cycle prefigures the region's geography for the next development wave. In the spring, we have our homeschool Geography Bee. The student who answers the most questions correctly will win a prize. There will also be prizes for 2nd and 3rd, and participation prizes for everyone. The bee is informal, nonthreatening and fun. Since you'll know exactly what to study, I hope you'll all want to participate! The questions will be based on the information below. Generally, the student should know the information for all the younger grades too, although questions will only come from their own grade. If you keep this chart, it will be a nice outline for studying a bit of geography year by year. Even 15 or 20 minutes once a week adds up to a lot of knowledge about geography and makes a nice change in your schedule.
