Territorial and International Affairs
The Department of the Interior has administrative responsibility for coordinating Federal policy in the U.S. insular areas of American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, as well as in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The department also has responsibility for oversight of all federal programs and funds in the freely associated states of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. The basic objective of the Department's Territorial and International Affairs responsibility is to promote economic, social and political development which will lead to greater self-government, economic self-reliance, and the active participation of the people of these insular areas in the determination of their own future. All the insular areas have popularly elected executive and legislative branches of government and are largely responsible for their own day-to-day administration. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Territorial and International Affairs develops and implements the Federal budget for insular area activities; provides technical assistance to the insular area governments; and acts as coordinator within the Federal Government for the development and implementation of Federal policy for the islands. This office also oversees and coordinates various international activities of the Department and supports U.S. foreign policy by making available to other governments the Department's natural resources and environmental expertise.

They take three classes together: Financial Management, Organizational Behavior, and Marketing Management. At the same time they take New Venture Creation, which is a practicum where the students form and operate a real business entity. There is also incorporated one additional service-learning practicum where the companies use the skills they have obtained to benefit the community as a socially responsible manner.

MBA Overview
The College of Business (COB) at Idaho State University (ISU) offers a program leading to the degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA) to holders of business and non-business bachelor's degrees. The MBA program is accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In addition to the traditional MBA degree, the program offers MBA degrees with emphasis areas in Accounting, Computer Information Systems (CIS), Management, Marketing, Finance, and Health Care Administration (HCA). The MBA program at Idaho State University was the first to be accredited by the AACSB in the State of Idaho and remains committed to the delivery of a high quality, rigorous program. The traditional MBA provides a broad general degree, particularly suited to those pursuing a managerial focus in their careers. The Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Marketing, Management, Finance, and Health Care Administration options provide specialized knowledge relating to their respective fields. The Accounting emphasis meets the needs of students who wish to satisfy requirements for certification as public accountants (CPA) or certification as management accountants (CMA). Accounting emphasis courses are generally offered only in the daytime and only in Pocatello. In the interest of a more diverse student body, the college encourages and attracts a number of full-time students from other parts of the United States and foreign countries.

Accounting

The concepts and terms of accounting are used to describe and measure the events of daily business activity. The accountant measures, aggregates, and reports financial information necessary for decision-making by organizational managers, owners, investors, government agencies, and other users. Timely and accurate information on operations is crucial to success in today's rapidly changing business environment and the accountant is responsible for this critical business function.   The importance of accounting information to business opens many career opportunities for accountants in public, private, and governmental accounting.   For more information please visit the web page at http://cob.isu.edu/Departments/Accounting. Computer Information Systems
The Computer Information Systems program has its foundations both in business and in computer science. Students in the CIS program get a solid foundation in computer programming, the methods of building large systems, and the technical foundations of databases and networks. At the same time, students in CIS also get a well-rounded education in how organizations conduct business and how to manage those businesses. This allows graduates of our CIS program to better apply their technical skills to solving the types of problems that exist in modern organizations. CIS graduates have both the skill to identify the solutions that best fit an organization's needs, and the technical ability to implement those solutions. Additional information can be found at the department web page at http://cob.isu.edu/Departments/CIS.

What the Idaho Community Forestry Program Can Do
For Your Community and You:
  • Provide information and training on applying for community forestry cost-share grants.
Work with your community to attain and maintain Tree City USA status. If your community is already a Tree City, help with earning the “Tree City USA Growth Award.”
Assist your community in developing a shade tree committee or advisory board, and help them develop their goals and be effective and informed tree program leaders for their community.
Help new and existing shade tree committees assess their community forest to determine program needs and develop program work plans.
Support (in a variety of ways) your community’s efforts to instruct your city council about the benefits of trees and the need for a community forestry program. Provide information on why it is both hazardous and expensive to top trees, and how to properly prune trees.

Idaho Youth Ranch: A seamless continuum of care for today's youth
by George Abruzzese In today's environment of fractured structure, intra-department turf battles and service requests that overwhelm the budgets of most providers, the non-profit Idaho Youth Ranch provides a stream of programs from residential treatment to family services for troubled youth. Working in conjunction with federal and state public authorities including law enforcement, juvenile justice administration, school districts, and social services, as well as private sector strategic partners, the IYR has built a state-wide network of interactive cooperation that is aimed at supporting youth and their families. IYR monitors youth from their first interaction with the juvenile justice system, sometimes before, through a series of programs designed to provide rehabilitation, training, re-entry into society, and aftercare, all coordinated to produce successful citizens. Using a program that combines, a modified Positive Peer Culture model (PPC), Multi-Systemic Therapy (Juvenile Justice, May 1992), and Restorative Justice principles, IYR is "solution focused and is committed to helping our youth," said Mike Jones, president. Unlike a typical PPC, IYR incorporates adult oversight and counseling, and also employs its cognitive self/-change curriculum. These programs, along with Dr. Larry Brentdro's Reconnecting Youth cirriculum and the restorative justice component are effective tools for "reconnecting youth with their families, schools and communities," Jones said.
