The Idaho Parent Information Resource Center (PIRC) was developed through a US Department of Education grant in 1998. The goal of this project is to bring parents, educators, and those working with families a wealth of information about helping their children get ready for, and succeed, in school from the early years through high school. We believe that when parents, schools and communities work together, children succeed. The Idaho PIRC Project is administered by Family Advocate Program in Boise. It is a statewide collaboration of five non-profit, parent education and support programs located in Boise, Caldwell, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Pocatello. Our purpose is to:
  • Increase parental understanding of child development and ways to encourage that development and growth. Strengthen partnerships among parents (including parents of children from birth to age five), teachers, principals, administrators and other school personnel in meeting the educational needs of children. Develop and strengthen the relationship between parents and their children's schools.

The Department of Education has funded parent information and resource centers across the United States. The centers share a common goal of expanding opportunities for parents to be involved in their child's educational growth and development. We need to work together to support the needs of families and children in Idaho. The following is a brief description of the five locations in Idaho. Along with our center in Boise , we are currently working with programs in Caldwell Coeur d'Alene Idaho Falls and Pocatello/American Falls . Learn more about the sites and other services available in Idaho by clicking on a location on the map below. Families First , through the Family Advocate Program, is the administrative agency for the Idaho PIRC project and has a parent information resource center at their location. The center provides a place for parents and caregivers to check out articles on parenting and child development, view short educational videos, and tap into community resources. The center also offers a toy and book lending library, plus internet access. Learn about the two additional programs the Family Advocate Program offers by clicking on the link above. The Parent Information Resource Center provided by the Family Service Alliance of Southeast Idaho is located in the Head Start building in American Falls. Services offered include parenting classes, anger management classes and one-on-one family consultations. Parents have the opportunity to increase their computer skills, watch informative videos, gather information, receive referrals to other community services and talk with the staff. The

Strengthening Idaho's most important resource - our children
I have long believed that the responsibility for educating our youth should be based with parents, teachers, and local school officials. I think Idaho parents and local school boards not Washington bureaucrats ought to decide what our children should be taught and how our education dollars should be spent. Accordingly, I have supported legislation that would return education funding to the states. While there may be a role for the federal government to play in education, it must be kept minimal. I believe this is necessary to ensure a positive and engaging educational experience for the young people of America. While college is not for everyone, those who choose to attend should have reasonable access to financial aid, whether that be through grants, scholarships, or loans. I have supported measures in the past which opened the door to more aid for students by eliminating the consideration of family assets such as home, farm, and small business equity in calculating the level of need. This has helped students from middle income families, not in a position to liquidate such assets, to provide for their children's college education.
