after the conversion of Iceland to Christianity. There are a number of narrative poems, called eddas , which tell tales of Norse gods: Hymiskvitha , and many others. These narratives would be collected in a larger prose work, the Edda written by Snorri Sturluson (1178-1241) and called the Snorra Edda in Icelandic.
skaldic poetry. The pantheon of gods was far from settled; the society of gods was primarily clan-based and wracked by internal violence and feuding.

or "Assembly." Here the separate clans would primarily deal with conflicts among members of the clan and exact reparations in order to prevent blood-feuds. In spite of this, however, the picture that Icelandic history gives us is one of fairly regular, low-level warfare between individuals and clans.

sagas
, are the greatest works of European literature until the Renaissance. Some sagas tell large-scale histories of the settlement of Iceland or Greenland, but the great genius of the saga-tellers was their focus on individuals and on the relentlessly human aspect of Norse life. In sagas such as Laxdaelasaga Njal's Saga , the larger history of Iceland fades into the dramas of individual passions, heroism, and revenge, a world of human passions and gestures. These sagas are perhaps our best glimpse of the Norse world view. Unlike the European world view, it was relentlessly focussed on the human side of historical events, how history and violence are germinated in the human mind and in human emotions. The world of the sagas is an unpredictable and arbitrary world where social order is only maintained on the thinnest of threads. Europe would not see their equal again until William Shakespeare sat down and put pen to paper.

147. Iceland Be Dammed
Article discusses dispute over harnessing rivers for hydroelectric power in Smithsonian Magazine.

document.write(''); Ministry for the Environment in Iceland Norsk Hydro Iceland Embassy Enrico Ferorelli ... read full text Iceland Be Dammed In the island nation, a dispute over harnessing rivers for hydroelectric power is generating floods of controversy Just beyond the northeasternmost reaches of Iceland's vast, volcano-studded Vatnajokull glacier lies an expanse of imperiled terrain. A proposed hydroelectric dam project would inundate 22 square miles of rugged landscape, a place scored by a glacial ice-melt river, the Jokulsa a Bru, and ice-melt streams. "What is at risk here," says one environmentalist, wildlife biologist Skarphedinn Thorisson, "is Western Europe's largest highland wilderness." The plan is as complex as it is controversial. The river, dammed and diverted to flow into a 25-mile-long tunnel, would then funnel into a second river. The combined waterways, feeding into a new underground power plant, would generate up to 750 megawatts of electricity to supply a proposed aluminum smelter in Iceland's eastern fjord country. Pro-development factions point out that 600 workers could be employed at such a facility. Environmentalists assert that a great deal more than job creation is at stake. Tourism, they say, is more vital to the national economy than industrialization. Ecotourism is increasing exponentially here. In 1995, for instance, 2,200 visitors came to Iceland for whale-watching cruises; last year, that number had soared to more than 60,000. Should the dam be built, says one activist, "Immense natural beauty will be lost forever."

The Icelandic and Faroese Collections at the Library of Congress
Robert Roth, Recommending Officer for Iceland and the Faroe Islands, Social Sciences Cataloging Division The Icelanders have a saying that could serve as a motto above the entrance to the Library of Congress: Blindur er boklaus madhur . Blind is the man without books. All that this connotes about Iceland is seldom evident in the travel brochures that depict its geysers, glaciers, and other natural marvels, but it is reflected in the enormous contribution to Western culture made by this small nation on the fringes of European civilization. Five centuries before Columbus set eyes on the New World, the Icelanders were practicing a form of self-government based on law. By the fourteenth century they had created a national literature of surpassing greatness; and only eighty years after Gutenberg printed his first Bible the printing press arrived on their shores. Indeed, in a stark, rough-hewn land where nature has not yet finished her work, a man of letters, Halldor Laxness, is the national hero. The Icelandic collections of the Library of Congress include more than four thousand titles, and reflect the country's rich history, its contributions to European culture, and the many links between Iceland and the United States.
