    History
[edit this] [Upload image] Iceland was settled in the late 9th and early 10th centuries principally by people of Norse origin. In 930 A.D. the ruling chiefs established a republican constitution and an assembly called the Althingi the oldest parliament in the world. Iceland remained independent until 1262 when Iceland entered into a treaty which established a union with the Norwegian monarchy. It passed to Denmark in the late 14th century when Norway and Denmark were united under the Danish crown. In the early 19th century national consciousness revived in Iceland. The Althingi had been abolished in 1800 but was reestablished in 1843 as a consultative assembly. In 1874 Denmark granted Iceland home rule in 1874 which again was extended in 1904. The constitution written in 1874 was revised in 1903 and a minister for Icelandic affairs residing in Reykjavik was made responsible to the Althingi . The Act of Union a 1918 agreement with Denmark recognized Iceland as a fully sovereign state united with Denmark under a common king. Iceland established its own flag and asked that Denmark represent its foreign affairs and defense interests. German occupation of Denmark in 1940 severed communications between Iceland and Denmark. In May 1940 Iceland was occupied by British military forces. In July 1941 responsibility for Iceland's defense passed to the United States under a U.S. - Icelandic defense agreement. Following a plebiscite Iceland formally became an independent republic on June 17 1944.

In October 1946, the Icelandic and U.S. Governments agreed to terminate U.S. responsibility for the defense of Iceland, but the United States retained certain rights at Keflavik. Iceland became a charter member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949. After the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in 1950, and pursuant to the request of NATO military authorities, the United States and Iceland agreed that the United States should again be responsible for Iceland's defense. A bilateral defense agreement signed on May 5, 1951, is the authority for U.S. military presence in Iceland. Iceland is the only NATO nation with no standing military of its own.

Iceland History Ingolfur Arnason fled from Norway, and his followers settled in Iceland about A.D. 870. Other settlers from Norway and from Viking colonies in the British Isles helped the population of Iceland reach about 25,000 in the next 60 years. In A.D. 930, the settlers set up Althing, the world's first parliament. Among the early settlers was Eric the Red, who lived in Iceland for several years before he sailed off to Greenland in A.D. 982. The 1100's and 1200's were Iceland's golden age of literature. During this time Snorri Sturluson, a poet and historian, put into writing some of Iceland's greatest sagas and eddas. people economy disasters land formations ... home

The Snorri Sturluson Saga Tour
History and Horses
A mix of history and natural wonder on a ride through an area that is also important to the ancient arts of Icelandic writing. Based at a very comfortable farm with its own hot pot this 5-day ride offers made- up beds (no sleeping bags!) this tour leaves plenty of time to relax after each day's riding. It also leaves a bit of time for some exploration of Iceland before or after. Day 1: Welcome to Iceland!
Tour members arrive at Keflavik Airport, and take the Flybus shuttle to the Hotel Loftlieder, where you can check luggage, have breakfast and set out to see some of the nation's capital. But be back at the Hotel by 5:30 in the afternoon, as that's when the outfitter will pick you up and take you to their farm, Vellir, in Hverdagerdi, about 45 minutes from Reykjavik. Over dinner that evening, the riders will get to know each other and tour details will be explained. Guest cabins at the farm will be a place for a good night's sleep! Day 2: Hveragerdi-Oddstadir in Lundarreykjadalur-Flokadalur
After breakfast, riders will take a bus west towards Borgarnes, to the farm Oddsstadir. Here it's time to meet the horses, and set off on an easy ride through the valley of Lundarreykjadalur to the church Lundur. This old church was often mentioned in the sagas - it was the winter residence of Bishop Rudolfur before he settled at the farm Baer. After seeing the church, riders will cross the mountain at the pass Lundarhals on the old riding path Lundursneid, where there is a spectacular view over the Borgarfjordur hills. Then it's down to the valley Flokudalur named after the former slave Floki who got his freedom and lived here in the early years of Iceland's settlement. You'll return to Oddsstadir for dinner and a good nights sleep. But don't forget to take a soak in the hot pot! 15 km, app.. 4 hours.

    < Iceland.is - Gateway to Iceland
Iceland was the last European country to be settled, mostly by Norsemen in the 9th and 10th centuries. They came mainly from Norway and elsewhere in Scandinavia, and from the Norse settlements in the British Isles, from where a Celtic element was also introduced. The language and culture of Iceland were predominantly Scandinavian from the outset, but there are traces of Celtic influence in some of the ancient poetry, in some personal names and in the apperance of present-day Icelanders.
All branches of the arts flourish in Iceland, especially painting, which started in earnest at the turn of the century. Literature has always been the mainstay of Icelandic culture; other aspects of the national heritage that used to be important in past centuries include manuscript illumination, woodcarving and folk music. There are many theatre companies in Iceland, including a National Theatre. In Reykjavík there is a symphony orchestra, an opera house and ballet company. International performers make regular visits, especially to the Reykjavík Arts Festival

    Early history
Iceland is, in geological terms, a young island. It started to form about 20 million years ago from a series of volcanic eruptions on the Mid-Atlantic ridge . The oldest rock samples found in Iceland date back 16 million years. The Iceland hotspot is likely partly responsible for the island's creation and continued existence. Iceland remained one of the world's last larger islands uninhabited by humans. It has been suggested that the land called Thule by the Greek merchant Pytheas was actually Iceland although it seems highly unlikely considering Pytheas' description of it as an agricultural country with plenty of milk, honey, and fruit. There is some literary evidence that Irish monks had settled in Iceland before the arrival of the Norse . However, there is no archaeological evidence to support such settlement. The 12th century scholar Ari žorgilsson wrote in his book

Iceland remained one of the world's last larger islands uninhabited by humans until it was discovered and settled by Norse immigrants from Western Norway in the late 9th century . The families were accompanied by servants and slaves, whereof many were Celts from Scotland and Ireland (known as Westmen ). Some literary evidence suggests that Irish monks may have been living in Iceland before the arrival of Norse settlers, but no archaeological evidence has been found. The Althing (general assembly) was founded in , marking the beginning of the Icelandic Commonwealth . It was the predecessor to the modern Icelandic legislature. Iceland was fairly independent from Norway until , when it became a Norwegian crown colony, and from Iceland was in practice ruled by Denmark, following the union of the two kingdoms.
