Iceland has an area of 103,000 sq km (39,769 sq mi). To view it properly you'd need to rent a car in iceland. Even then you can't traverse every square foot as over 80 percent of the land is unpopulated and covered either with permanent snow and ice fields (glaciers) or has a volcanic surface. To get near these though you often need to take a guided tour of iceland or rent a car. Iceland Travel Related Links Iceland is one of the world's smaller nations with a population of about 265,000. Flights to Iceland land in the capital city of Reykjavik. Tours around Iceland normally start from here. Reykjavik, with more than 60 percent of the population is sheltered in the extreme southwestern portion of the island. Most of the hotels in iceland and the resorts in iceland can be found in Reykjavik. During the last century, commercial whaling decimated most of the world's whale populations. Despite this on 6 August 2003, the Government of Iceland announced that 38 minke whales would be taken as the start of a so-called 'scientific' whaling program. It outlined a program that would expand to take a total 500 whales, including sei and fin whales as well as minkes, in 2004 and 2005. The Icelandic Government would like to begin full-scale commercial whaling in 2006, which could could seriously deplete the minke whale population. Many people - including us - believe that the Government of Iceland should look to other forms of economic development, such as tourism, which respects rather than kills whales.

Enlarge Image Reykjavik Iceland Gallup poll , 48 percent of the Icelandic public thinks the existence of groups like Greenpeace is "rather important to very important" a marked shift from past antagonism against Greenpeace for its anti-whaling policies. Frode Pleym, our campaigner who toured Iceland in September aboard our flagship, Rainbow Warrior, says this result is very encouraging. "Half the population is open to Greenpeace and our work." In the course of the visit in September, the ship's crew spoke to thousands of Icelanders and found themselves challenging a number of misconceptions. "Some had no idea we worked on anything except Icelandic whaling, many confused us with other groups which have sunk whaling ships in the past. Few were aware that we had worked side by side with Iceland for stronger environmental protection in many international fora." Arni Finnsson, Chairman of Iceland Nature Conservation Association, added "This strongly suggests that Icelanders do appreciate Greenpeace work on protecting the environment and it will probably elevate the debate on environmental issues in Iceland. Addressing climate change and marine pollution are areas of mutual concern for Greenpeace and Iceland."

Government of Iceland Announces Withdrawal
From the International Whaling Commission
The Government of Iceland announced today that it will give notice of withdrawal from the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. Under the terms of the Convention, withdrawal will take effect on June 30, 1992. The Government pointed out that no decision had been taken concerning a resumption of whaling activities by Icelandic nationals, and that the first priority would be the establishment of a regional organization for the effective conservation and rational management of whales in the North Atlantic Ocean. The decision to withdraw from the IWC was based, foremost, on the conclusion that the organization had ceased to act in accordance with the management principles of the International Whaling Convention and with the weight of scientific evidence. It was particularly noted that the International Whaling Commission had frequently disregarded the advice of its own Scientific Committee, wherein the health of major populations of whales, including certain stocks in the North Atlantic Ocean, had been demonstrated. In his remarks on the decision of the Icelandic Government to withdraw from the IWC, the Minister of Fisheries stated, "The economic and social fabric of this island nation overwhelmingly dependent on the health and productivity of the surrounding marine environment. Whales have an important ecological role in the Icelandic Exclusive Economic Zone; they consume more then the amount of seafood that our fishermen harvest. Whales must, therefore, be treated in the same manner as other resources, subject to the same management principles."

A landscape of cooled lava, created by the 1973 eruption of the Helgafell volcano, on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. The eruption created a new peak, Eldfell, and a 3 km/1.9 mi lava flow, Eldfellshraun . Magma, rocks, ash, and soot were ejected. Since the eruption, the volcano has stabilized, and vegetation has begun to colonize the slopes.

The hot water or steam can then be converted into electricity. Nesjavellir is situated in an area of volcanic activity and has higher than normal rock temperatures near to the surface.
