We walked up a road, around Mam Tor and we then walked along the path up Mam Tor, Where we had a break. By now, we had walked about a mile. We then carried on, after having a drink and something to eat. We carried on walking along the path. We were on the very top of the ridge, and the path was beginning to slope uphill. After walking about a mile along the ridge, we came to the triangulation pillar and the height was 517 metres high at that point! We had another break, and then made our way back down, on a different path. This last part of the walk was about half a mile, not as long as the way up.

  • The National Anthem
This site has the lyric and an audio file of the Icelandic National Anthem. The national anthem of Iceland was originally composed in 1874 for the millenium celebration of the settlement of Iceland. It was composed by Sveinbjorn Sveinbjornsson and the lyrics are by Matthias Jochumsson.
  • The Coat of Arms of Iceland
There are four supporters on the national arms: Bull, eagle, dragon (or a griffin) and giant. The bull and giant are standing on a basement of basalt representing Iceland. Above them are the eagle and dragon. The supporters refer to the guardians of Iceland that are mentioned in a passage in Heimskringla. The story is from the Saga of Olav Tryggvason (chapter 33) and goes like this:

  • Country Profile ALMOST EVERYBODY IN ICELAND is on a first-name basis - even the phone books in this country of 270,000 are divided by first names. A land of glaciers, volcanoes and frequent earthquakes, Iceland has the world's oldest parliament - the Althingi, established in 930. Icelanders also have a fondness for the epic tales of explorers who began their journeys from this country's shores in the 10th century.

    http://www.eas.ualberta.ca/elj/icepics/eljpics.html
Welcome to my web collection of photographs from Iceland. The photographs are a small selection of the 1,500 or so slides I took in Iceland during six visits over a twenty-year period beginning in 1965. I make no claim to artistic merit in these photographs. I have chosen them simply because they capture for me something of the mood of the Icelandic landscape or a special moment during one of my trips. In all, you will find more than three hundred and twenty pictures of Iceland's landscape, both rural and urban, organized geographically to let you take a "virtual tour" around the island. Click on any of the buttons in the map below to go another page for that part of Iceland, which in turn contains two or more thumbnail photographs, coupled with some descriptive text and linked to larger displays of each picture. Alternatively, you can access the pictures using the text-list to the right of the map. As well as the virtual tour, you can view many of the pictures in three other ways. First, for visitors with patience and/or a fast internet connection, I have included a dozen Selected enlargements of my favourite photographs. These might take some time to download, but they are worth it because of their higher resolution.

    Abstract
The idea for this volume came from the meeting Iceland 2000 held at the University of Keele in April 2000. This meeting was the third in an occasional series where researchers interested in a range of environmental themes in Iceland had assembled and discussed current results and ideas in a very supportive and constructive atmosphere. The first of these was held in the University of Aberdeen in April 1989 with papers published as Environmental Change in Iceland: Past and Present, edited by Judith K.Maizels and Chris Caseldine (1991), and the second in the University of Munich in December 1991 published as Environmental Change in Iceland, edited by Johann Stötter and Friedrich Wilhelm (Münchener Geographische Abhandlungen Reihe B, Band 12, 1994).

    Summary
Location: European island in the North Atlantic (3 hours' flight from London, 5 ½ hours from New York).
    Capital: Reykjavik (pop. 111,000 (2000)).
Total area: 103,000 km² (39,756 square miles); vegetation: 23%, lakes: 3%, glaciers: 11%, other: 63%.
Sea area within fishing limits: 758,000 km².
    Coastline: 4,970 km.
    Physical Geography
Geologically speaking, the country is very young and bears many signs of still being in the making. It appears on the whole roughly hewn, abrupt and jagged, without that softness of outline that characterizes a more mature landscape. Its average height above sea level is 500 m, and its highest point, Hvannadalshnukur in the glacier Öræfajökull, reaches 2,119 m. One-quarter of the country lies below 200 m. The biggest lowland areas include those of Arnessysla, Rangarvallasysla and Vestur-Skaftafellssysla in the south, and the Myrar area in the West. These lowlands represent strandflats, a result of marine abrasion and glacier erosion during the Pleistocene era. Glacial erosion has played an important part in giving the valleys their present shape, and in some areas, such as between Eyjafjörður and Skagafjörður, the landscape possesses alpine characteristics.
