Whether you want to master a precision wrist shot, perfect a double axel or just learn how not to fall down and embarrass yourself, more than half a dozen skating rinks in Prague offer adults private and group lessons that teach proper balance, movement and other skills.

A good skating or hockey instructor can teach the craft, regardless of language, by demonstrating proper technique. In classes taken recently by a Prague Post reporter, the language barrier was not a problem. However, if you insist that lessons given in English are the only way to go, call the rinks listed on Page A15 to see if a qualified instructor is available.

Students selecting the tennis stream will prepare for a career as a tennis club pro. The sports selected for this program offer paid employment opportunities and the job forecast in this field is very positive due to a shortage of qualified coaches in Canada. At Humber, experienced faculty will provide students with expertise in sport sciences, club management, coaching theory, program planning, leadership, sport specific technique and professional and ethical conduct. Through partnerships with leading sport clubs and high-performance training centres students receive over 400 hours of "hands-on" training in their selected sport. Students will also receive NCCP and HIGH FIVE certification. Students will emerge from the program with a solid understanding of the coaching industry, its opportunities and professional standards. This program will provide students with the professional skills to design and implement a range of sport programming options, including special events/tournaments, beginner instructional lessons, programs for special populations, and competitive programs.

    General info
Press Story ideas > Ice-skating in Holland Ice-skating in Holland The history of the Dutch and their affiliation with ice-skating goes back to the Middle Ages and even earlier. The first ice-skates were made from cow shanks or cow ribs through which holes had been hand-drilled to tie them to the feet. The next form of the skate was a wooden block with a metal strip. This eventually evolved into the curled wooden skate with steel blades which appeared before 1600.
This was the last step to the combination shoe and skate as we know it today. The skates were first used as a mode of transportation. The roads were bad and often impassable in the wet winter season. When there was ice it was a good time for relatives and friends to visit one another across the frozen waters.
In the Middle Ages it was custom for the lord of the castle to attract skaters to compete in various activities during the ice period. What was once a mode of transportation soon became a sport as rules were created among the men to see who could get home quicker from a certain place. This started the competition sport in the oldest form of speed-skating. The first skating association was set up in 1840 in Dokkum, Friesland.
    ELFSTEDENTOCHT
Dokkum takes us to the "Eleven Towns Race", or Elfstedentocht, held in Friesland, one of the most northern provinces in Holland. This ice-skating marathon has taken place only several times in the past 82 years, the last one in 1997, due to ice and weather conditions.

Mass Media and Gender Identity in High Performance Canadian Figure Skating
    By: Karen McGarry
    Introduction:
Figure Skating the Media, and Canadian Culture
Figure skating is viewed by many Canadians as an integral part of Canadian culture. Records of ice skating date back to at least the 1700s, and figure skating, along with hockey, receives prime-time television coverage on major Canadian television networks. Figure skating, in fact, is ranked second only to hockey in terms of television spectatorship, government funding, and corporate sponsorship (Skate Canada 2002). Its popularity among fans is heightened by the fact that since the 1940s, Canadians have won more than 500 international medals, making it one of the nation's most competitively successful amateur sports. Skaters such as Elvis Stojko, Kurt Browning, Elizabeth Manley, Barbara Ann Scott, Toller Cranston, and Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, to name a few, have become household names and national icons in Canada. Given figure skating's high spectatorship levels, it is not surprising that Skate Canada, the sport's amateur governing body, and CTV, Canada's self-declared "official figure skating network" have opportunistically marketed figure skating as a distinctly "Canadian" sport and a sport of national significance:

Coaching Because training is a critical component of Special Olympics mission and philosophy, Special Olympics International has made a certification program available. In Washington, a coach must attend a General Orientation (introduction to Special Olympics including polices and procedure) and a Sports-Specific Session (basic sports skills and strategies) and complete a 10-hour practicum to become certified to train athletes in Special Olympics. Because a coach is ultimately responsible for the safety, health and general welfare of athletes, we also require head coaches to be 18 years of age and have Washington State Patrol (WSP) clearance.
