Nutrition Science the Olympics. Welcome to sports Nutrition! One of thesesports, women s ice hockey, has its debut as a medal sport in the 1998
http://btc.montana.edu/olympics/nutrition/default.htm
Welcome to Sports Nutrition! Science is a powerful asset for athletes who want to use nutrition to their advantage. Whether an Olympic medal is won by tenths of a second in a ski race, decimal points in a figure skating competition, or goals in an ice hockey game, an athlete's nutritional status makes a critical difference in reaching peak performance. This course explores the science of sports nutrition and shows how to apply nutrition principles to benefit an athlete's training and performance.
Nutrition and physical training are connected long term athletic success depends on meeting day-to-day nutritional needs. For example, maintaining optimal hydration status and sufficient muscle glycogen stores delays the onset of fatigue and enables athletes to train longer before tiring. Also, although the stress of exercise training stimulates physiological improvement, adaptations to physical stress actually occurs in the recovery period following the exercise sessions. Satisfying an athlete's needs for rehydrating, refueling, and rest are essential components of the recovery process. Check out the Physiology and Psychology section for more information on the physiological aspects of exercise training.
Although sport nutrition basics are similar for all athletes, important differences exist for individual athletes in various sports. The focus here is on the nutritional needs of selected endurance sports and strength/power sports. One of these sports, women's ice hockey, has its debut as a medal sport in the 1998 Winter Olympics!

ice hockey became an olympic sport in 1920, which forced the internationalfederation to expand its operation outside the European borders.
http://www.tampere.fi/jaakiekkomuseo/emaailma.htm
Ice Hockey World
Ice hockey found its way from Canada to Europe in the late 19th century. According to records from that time the game was played in Great Britain, France and Germany. The first national championships were arranged in Great Britain in the season 1903-1904. Ice hockey was developed in Europe as an amateur sport basis.
The International Ice Hockey Federation (Ligue Internationale de Hockey sur Glace, LIHG) was founded in Paris in May 1908 by the French initiative. The inaugural meeting was attended by representatives from Great Britain, France, Switzerland and Belgium. The first official European Championships were arranged in Switzerland 1910. Great Britain won the championship.
Ice hockey became an Olympic sport in 1920, which forced the international federation to expand its operation outside the European borders. In the Olympics the clubs representing Canada dazzled other countries with their skills. The first World Championships were arranged at Chamonix, France, in 1930. Canada was superior and as predicted made its way to the final easily. Japan took part in the World Championships as the first Asian country. As an exception to the Canadian superiority Great Britain won the gold medal in 1936 Olympics. The British-born players in the team had learned their hockey skills in Canada.
In the 1950's the Soviet Union entered the international ice hockey arenas being able to challenge Canada right away. Thus the confrontation between socialism and capitalism brought politics onto the ice rinks. Tensions were manifested in boycotts against the Olympics and World Championships. During the last century the Soviet Union/Russia won 23 championships against Canada's 21. The superpowers of ice hockey also include Czechoslovakia/Czech, Sweden, United States, Finland and Slovakia.

International sports court forbade Russian ice hockey goalie to play for Russia's national team at Olympics
The International Sports Court of Arbitration forbade Russian ice-hockey goal-keeper Yevgeny Nabokov to play for the national team of Russia at the Olympics in Salt Lake City. The court motivated its decision by the fact that the Rules of the International Ice-Hockey Federation (IIHF) forbid a player who played for a national team of one country in official games held under the IIHF aegis to later form part of another country's national team.
The leadership of the Russian Olympic Select invited Yevgeny Nabokov as one of the two main goal-keepers of the squad. He played for the national team of Kazakhstan in the world junior championship of 1994. And though after that he did not form part of a national team of the other country, the court ignored this fact, the RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

FLORIDA PANTHERS STAR TO PLAY FOR RUSSIA IN OLYMPICS
The Russian national ice hockey team can aspire for top success in next year's Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City, Utah) now that Vyacheslav Fetisov has become its head trainer and Leonid Tyagachev was elected National Olympic Committee president, expects Pavel Boure, NHL's Florida Panthers star of Russian extraction.
The team is not after money, and will fight for Russia's honour, the famous player said to a news conference in Moscow.
Boure is sure Fetisov will put fight in the team, and the best players will flock to it, whether they are now in Russia or abroad.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin recently received Pavel Boure. "It took me five minutes to forget I was talking to a head of state," remarked the athlete, who described the federal President as genuine intellectual and amazingly well versed in sports.
