Hockey
is a game in which two opposing teams attempt to drive a ball, puck, or other small object through the goal of the opponent by means of sticks that are curved or hooked at one end. The two main forms of the game are ice hockey, played indoors or outdoors, and field hockey, generally played outdoors. Forms of hockey Perhaps one of the earliest stick-and-ball games, were known by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Arabs. Similar sports were played in the Middle Ages (from about the 5th century to about the 15th century) by Europeans and in pre-Columbian times (before the 16th century) by Native South Americans. A related sport, hurling, is known to have been played during the 1st millennium BC in Ireland. The name hockey, thought to have been adapted by the English from the French hoquet ("shepherd's crook"), was first given to the sport in the 18th century but was not in common usage until the 19th century. Ice Hockey Ice hockey is probably a descendant of bandy, a sport that developed in England in the late 18th century but is now played only in the Baltic countries, Sweden, and Russia and the other successor states of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Modern ice hockey was devised in either 1853 or 1860 by British soldiers stationed in Canada. Rules were set by students at McGill University in Montréal, Québec, in 1879, and several amateur clubs and leagues were established in Canada by the late 1880s. The game is believed to have been first played in the United States in 1893. By the beginning of the 20th century the sport had spread to Great Britain and other parts of Europe. Today, ice hockey is played in some 30 countries, principally in North America, Scandinavia, and Russia. It is the national sport of Canada.

Print Preview of Section From a young age, players develop their skills and learn about hockey by playing and practicing as much as possible. Watching games, in person or on television, can also be helpful. Some professional teams, in an effort to promote the game and enhance their standing in the community, conduct seminars where they provide instruction. Many aspiring players attend schools or camps in the summer, where they not only spend time on the ice, but also study in the classroom, learning about strategy through lectures or film. In general anyone who does not play hockey for a salary is considered an amateur. In the United States, this includes youth hockey players, high school players, and college players, as well as those who play on certain teams that represent the United States in international competition. In Canada and some European countries, junior hockey is an advanced level of amateur play for those of high school age and just older. Players who leave home to play for such amateur teams often receive some type of stipend and/or living expenses, but no salary.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah In case you missed the women’s hockey medal ceremony, you missed more than just the ebullient Canadians whooping above their gold, and the weepy U.S. women reluctantly inspecting their silver. Also on hand, dressed in what resembled prep school suits, were the upstart Swedes, who had shocked Finland 2-1 in the bronze medal game earlier in the day. Think this was an upset? Finland won the bronze in 1998 and Sweden lagged so far behind them (and other potential contenders) that a last fall they weren’t planning to come to these Games at all. "Then we got a little bit better," said Stefan Lindberg, president of the Swedish Olympic committee, "so we figured, ‘Why not?’" After losing in 1998 to Team USA, everything since then had pointed to this moment for Team Canada. Forget World Championships. Forget the eight straight losses to the Americans in pre-Olympic competition. For Canada, this was all about securing the only thing that had eluded them Olympic gold.

    By Kevin Allen
Editor's note: This article originally appeared as a chapter in "USA Hockey: A Celebration of a Great Tradition." What the U.S. hockey team did to the Soviets on the ice at Lake Placid in 1980 hardly compares to what they did to the hearts and minds of American people. "It's the most transcending moment in the history of our sport in this country," gushed Dave Ogrean, former executive director of USA Hockey. "For people who were born between 1945 and 1955, they know where they were when John Kennedy was shot, when man walked on the moon, and when the USA beat the Soviet Union in Lake Placid." The 1980 U.S. team, consisting of college players and long-shot pro aspirants, won Olympic gold. No other Olympic performance has touched America the way that hockey team did, not even Jesse Owens's brilliant runs in front of Adolf Hitler in Berlin in 1936. Thanks to the advent of television, Eruzione's goal in 1980 triggered a spontaneous national celebration of amazing proportion. People wept, strangers hugged each other, and groups around the country broke into stirring renditions of "God Bless America" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." Those in attendance remember the incredible number of American flags that were in the crowd that day, not small flags that fit comfortably in the hands of small children, but mammoth flags that were usually found on 30-foot flag polls. Americans were overcome by patriotism.

It was 20 years ago Tuesday when the U.S. Olympic hockey team made us believe in miracles. The young Americans' upset of the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics remains one of the great moments in sports history. ESPN.com's Ray Ratto says it wasn't just the game that it made it the Miracle on Ice; it was the timing and context of it. The Cold War was at one of its peaks, and the Russians seemed invincible , especially on the ice. All that changed Feb. 22, 1980.

[Olympics Main] [Getting In Shape] [Safety Tips] ... [Ice Hockey] HISTORY Men's ice hockey While the origins of ice hockey are unclear, it's widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball, and the number of players on a team was set at nine. In 1885, Montreal became the site for the first national hockey organization. The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada was founded and further reduced the number of players to seven. The sport's first league of four teams was formed that same year in Ontario. Ice hockey migrated south to the United States in the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. Although hockey was a national pastime in Canada, the United States was the first country to organize a professional league. Formed in 1903 and based in Houghton, Michigan, the Pro Hockey League included teams and players from both Canada and the U.S. The league folded three years later, and in 1910, the National Hockey League was formed.

With ice hockey's origins placed in several places at once, it most likely it developed in Europe during the Middle Ages, when field hockey was taken to frozen ponds and lakes during the cold winter months. The sport later developed throughout North America, where British soliders played a similar game of "hurley" in army forts throughout Canada. Ice hockey caught on to become a major national pastime in Canada, and quickly headed south to the United States.
As it continues to do, Canada historically dominated the sport in the 20th century, followed by the Russians, Americans, Swedes and Czechs. Women’s ice hockey was added to the Olympic program at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, where the American defeated the favored Canadians in a memorable match for the Gold Medal. The following "grudge" match at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games saw a revesral of fortune for the U.S. as the Canadian team took home the gold at the Salt Lake City Games.
