What do you do after winning Olympic gold?
Photograph by David Silverman
L ike academic researchers and most doctors, athletes have become specialists. Kids pick a sport earlier than ever and spend more time pursuing it. With all this additional coaching and training, competition at professional levels is as fierce as it's ever been, and even such extraordinary athletes as Michael Jordan and Deion Sanders have been unable to excel at more than one sport. It's the same story at the college level - unless your name is Tara Mounsey. At twenty years old, Mounsey '01 has already lived a lifetime in the public eye. As captain of her Concord, New Hampshire, high school hockey team, she led the way to a state championship. At Brown, her Bobby Orr-style skills as a defenseman guided the Brown ice hockey team to the 1997 Ivy League title and the ECAC regular season championship; Mounsey herself was named the ECAC and Ivy Rookie of the Year. And last winter in Nagano, Japan, she tallied two key goals and four assists as part of the U.S. women's hockey squad that won Olympic gold.
Men's Basketball 4-23
Ivy League scoring champ Kamal Rountree '99 scored a career high twenty-five points against Holy Cross in December. It was a rare highlight in Head Coach Frank Dobb's last season at Brown.

Sports in Sweden
Sweden is, despite us being only 9 million people, a very successful nation in international sports. The Swedish tennis players, Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg are known all over the world thanks to two decades of fantastic achievements.
The older generation will also remember Ingemar Johansson
Looking at the world map one may be surprised that Sweden has warm summers and real winter only from the middle and further north. Sweden is really a country where almost any sport can be played, and sport is by far the most popular pastime in Sweden. The Swedish climate allows great summer, as well as winter, sports of all kinds.
The winter sports are very popular, especially skiing. Downhill ski areas are very common in the whole middle and northern part of the country. Cross-country is also part of the culture and Sweden hosts the largest cross-country race in the world - Vasaloppet - 90 km long, with over 12,000 participants every year.
Summer sports have great facilities all over the country. Sweden has over 360

Dartmouth in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame
Eddie Jeremiah - 1973
A seven-time letterwinner at Dartmouth, Eddie Jeremiah was the Big Green's hockey coach from 1937-67 and compiled a coaching record of 300-247-10. His teams in 1948 and 1949 were runners-up in the NCAA championship tournament. After his successful playing days at Dartmouth ended, Jeremiah went on to a five-year professional career.
William Riley - 1977
Bill Riley was one of the great all-time scorers in college hockey and was one of three famous hockey playing brothers. Playing four varsity seasons, Riley appeared in 71 games, scoring 228 points (118g, 110a). Riley was a major factor in the Big Green's march to two NCAA finals. He continued his interest in the game and became an official in New England. Riley was honored for his contributions to hockey when he received the Sheaffer Pen Award.
Myles Lane - 1973
Myles Lane ranks as one of Dartmouth's greatest athletes of all time. From 1925-28, Lane earned three letters each in hockey and football and another in baseball. He was captain of the 1927-28 hockey team and gained national prominence by becoming the first American collegian to successfully enter professional hockey, joining the New York Rangers. While at Dartmouth he established records for goals in a season by a defenseman (20) and career goals by a defenseman (50).

In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces. What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on! One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge! In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.
