The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

WINTER OLYMPICS ICE HOCKEY
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1920 The word hockey comes from old French "hocquet" which meant "stick". The origins of ice hockey are unclear, but it's widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. In 1879, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal organized competitions and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. The sport migrated south to the United States during the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. ICE HOCKEY joined the Olympic program at the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games (see also Discontinued Sports ) held in early April. There were also the first world championships and were played by seven-man sides, the only time seven-man teams ever to play at the Olympic Games. Four years later, men's hockey made its winter debut in Chamonix with the current standard of six men on the ice at a time and has been part of every winter program. Canada and the Soviet Union have been the two dominant countries in the history of men's Olympic ice hockey. The two countries have won 14 out of the 19 Olympic tournaments. Canada won the first four Olympic tournaments and six of the first seven, but its streak ended in 1956. The gold medal at the 1952 Oslo Games marked the sixth and last gold medal for Canada. The changing of the guard occurred at the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Games with the emergence of the Soviet Union. The Soviets dominated the competition and won eight of the next 10 gold medals. The only interruptions to the streak were when the United States upset the Soviets in 1960 and 1980 on American soil. After the Albertville Games in 1992, the Soviet Union collapsed and the country's Olympic hockey dynasty ended.

The Miracle on Ice is the popular nickname for the ice hockey game in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games , in which a team of amateur and collegiate players from the United States beat the Soviet Union against near-impossible odds on February 22 , in Lake Placid, New York . The United States went on to win the gold medal. USSR received the silver medal, Sweden received the bronze.
Prelude and group play
The United States entered the competition without a great deal of fanfare or favor, having been seeded seventh in the final round of twelve teams which qualified for the Lake Placid Olympics. They were composed of collegiate players and amateurs; only a few had signed a contract to play in the National Hockey League , the world's premier professional league, but none had yet actually played in the League. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, were the favored team going into the tournament. Though classed as amateur, Soviet players essentially played professionally in a well-developed league with excellent training facilities. They were led by legendary players in world ice hockey, such as Boris Mikhailov , a center who served as the team captain, and Vladislav Tretiak , considered by many to be the best ice hockey goaltender in the world at the time, as well as talented, young, and dynamic players such as defenseman

Origins

Ice hockey developed in the late 1700s and 1800s, when British garrisons stationed in Canada at various times took rules from soccer, field hockey, Scandinavian 'bandy', Irish 'hurling' or Canadian native lacrosse and adapted them for play on snow or ice. The first set of rules specifying a puck and a flat piece of wood was writtten in 1837. The cities of Halifax, Montreal, Kingston and Windsor were all sites of some of the first games played with rules resembling the modern ones. Ice hockey was established on the European Continent around 1905 and the International Ice Hockey Federation was established in 1908 in Paris with founding members fron France, Belgium, Great Britain, Bohemia, and Switzerland. The first IIHF tournament was held in Les Avants, Switzerland, in 1910.
Men's ice hockey actually made its first Olympic appearance at the summer games in Antwerp in 1920, four years before the first winter games were held.
Canadians dominated the Olympic Games for many years, but from 1956 to 1992 the Soviet team ranked at the top of the medal standings. Women's hockey made its Olympic debut at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano.
