From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Ice hockey , known simply as hockey in Canada and the United States , is a team sport played on ice . It is one of the world's fastest sports, with players on skates capable of going high speeds on natural or artificial ice surfaces. The most prominent ice hockey nations are Canada, the United States, Soviet Union Russia Sweden Finland ... Czechoslovakia before 1993, and since 1993 both the Czech Republic and Slovakia Belarus Ukraine , and Switzerland . It is the official national winter sport of Canada , and it has a comparably strong following in certain regions of the United States , notably the Northeast , the Northern Midwest , and Alaska . The term " hockey country " is used to describe ice hockey's geographic region. In all there are 64 members in the International Ice Hockey Federation . As one might expect, its worldwide popularity is concentrated primarily in locales cool enough for natural, long-term seasonal ice cover. While most of the countries mentioned above have their own professional ice hockey league, North America 's National Hockey League is considered the world's premier professional ice hockey league and attracts almost all of the world's elite players.

Prelude and group play
The United States entered the competition without a great deal of fanfare or favor, having been seeded seventh in the final round of twelve teams which qualified for the Lake Placid Olympics. They were composed of collegiate players and amateurs; only a few had signed a contract to play in the National Hockey League , the world's premier professional league, but none had yet actually played in the League. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, were the favored team going into the tournament. Though classed as amateur, Soviet players essentially played professionally in a well-developed league with excellent training facilities. They were led by legendary players in world ice hockey, such as Boris Mikhailov , a center who served as the team captain, and Vladislav Tretiak , considered by many to be the best ice hockey goaltender in the world at the time, as well as talented, young, and dynamic players such as defenseman

Ice Hockey
Hockey was first brought to North America when British soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as the "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball and the number of players on a team was set at nine. The National Hockey League was formed in 1910; there are currently 30 clubs competing in the National Hockey League.

History
Ice hockey was on the 1920 Summer Olympic program and moved into the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924. A round-robin tournament was used to determine medal standings until 1992. Since then, the top six countries from the previous Winter Olympics automatically qualify, and eight other teams are split into two pools for round-robin competition to determine two additional qualifiers. The eight qualifying teams then play a single-elimination tournament. The score of the gold medal game is shown from 1992 on. Women's ice hockey became an Olympic sport in 1998.
