view description 1980 United States Hockey Team Miracle on Ice The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team was a patchwork of college and minor-league players led by coach Herbert Paul Brooks. "Gentlemen," he warned, "you do not have enough talent to win on talent alone." Few outside the team expected much at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Since 1956, teams from the Soviet Union had dominated Olympic ice hockey, and they were the overwhelming favorites in 1980. The upstart Americans stunned the world with a string of upset victories, bringing them to a face-off with the Soviet juggernaut. The mismatch was laden with Cold War tension and supercharged with national pride. Teamwork trumped talent, and the unlikely Americans handed the Soviets one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. The dramatic triumph was a welcome international victory for the U.S., already on edge over its hostages in Iran and the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Truly inspired by its "miracle on ice," the American team advanced to beat Finland and win the gold.

Figure skating is known as a sport of grace, and beauty. Olympic figure skaters skate to
musical scores and create a kind of ice ballet. The four Olympic Figure Skating events include the Ladies Singles, the Men's Singles, Pairs or Doubles, and Ice Dancing. Singles and Doubles have two distinct forums which are the Short Program and Free Skating. The Short Program is designed to demonstrate a specific set of skating talents . During Free Skating competition, the Olympic skaters perform to music and are allowed to create a more freeform routine. Ice Dancing provides a sequenced dance on ice that is similar to ballroom dancing performed by a pair of skaters. Olympic Figure skating is an event that draws a large audience from around the world. There are six types of Alpine Skiing events at the Olympic Winter Games. These Alpine Skiing events are Downhill Racing, Slalom, the Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, and Alpine Combination. These skiing events are the most traditional competitions of the Winter Olympic games.

History of ice hockey in Slovakia
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Canada is the country widely known for introducing the game of ice hockey to the world. Although there were similar games played around the globe, Canadian ice hockey was the one to achieve dominance. For example: bandy hockey a game very close to modern ice hockey and native to Europe was modified and later fully replaced by ice hockey. When the first European Championships took place in 1910 the game was a mixture of elements of both bandy and ice hockey. The difference between the two was mainly the rules and the equipment used by players. Bandy hockey used shorter sticks and the protective equipment was also rather modest. The Canadian form of the game had fully replaced the other variations on the European continent during the Olympic Games in Chamonix in In 1908, the International Ice Hockey Federation , an international organization that still runs most of the international hockey tournaments today, was established. In Slovakia (as a part of former Czechoslovakia ), Canadian

    Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
    1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

It was 20 years ago Tuesday when the U.S. Olympic hockey team made us believe in miracles. The young Americans' upset of the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics remains one of the great moments in sports history. ESPN.com's Ray Ratto says it wasn't just the game that it made it the Miracle on Ice; it was the timing and context of it. The Cold War was at one of its peaks, and the Russians seemed invincible , especially on the ice. All that changed Feb. 22, 1980.

[Olympics Main] [Getting In Shape] [Safety Tips] ... [Ice Hockey] HISTORY Men's ice hockey While the origins of ice hockey are unclear, it's widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. By the 1870s, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal were organizing games and had developed the first known set of hockey rules. In accordance with this new set of regulations, known as "McGill rules," a puck was substituted for a rubber ball, and the number of players on a team was set at nine. In 1885, Montreal became the site for the first national hockey organization. The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada was founded and further reduced the number of players to seven. The sport's first league of four teams was formed that same year in Ontario. Ice hockey migrated south to the United States in the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. Although hockey was a national pastime in Canada, the United States was the first country to organize a professional league. Formed in 1903 and based in Houghton, Michigan, the Pro Hockey League included teams and players from both Canada and the U.S. The league folded three years later, and in 1910, the National Hockey League was formed.

    Finland make hockey history

Sweden's Maria Rooth (left) and Finland's Maria-Helena Paelvilae tough it out on the rink Petra Vaarakallio made Olympic history for Finland, when she scored the first women's ice hockey goal eight minutes and 35 seconds into their game against Sweden. The Finns beat Sweden 6-0 in a game that Finland dominated from the opening face-off in women's ice hockey Olympic debut. Vaarakallio's team-mate, Sari Krooks, also scored and put her fine performance down to a pre-game telephone call home to her four-year-old daughter, Annika. "She told me, 'Stop in front of the net and put the puck in the net,'" Krooks said. Krooks, who turned 30 last Monday, scored five minutes before the end of the match, after officials consulted a video replay to see if she had slipped the puck past Swedish goaltender Annica Ahlen. Sweet victory Despite the game's one-way traffic, the Finnish players ignored the game's historic aspect until it was won. "We were concentrating so much on the game, trying to take it as just a game, not as history at the Olympics," Krooks said. "Now that I start to think about it, it feels unbelievable. I get a little goosebumpy."
