To start with, Magnus, the president at the time of foundation, replaced the acting president van den Bulcke, but he resigned immediately because the delegates did not follow his programme. Vice president Patton then moved up as president and immediately called new elections with the result that van den Bulcke once again became president and Patton himself vice president.
Just a few months later, World War I hit also the sports world. During the war, there were no LIHG activities, neither at the sports field nor in the administrative area.
After World War I, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expelled the "war losers" Germany and Austria from their ranks. The LIHG followed this decision in 1920, and at the same time, the membership of Bohemia was transferred to the newly established Czechoslovakia (TCH).
At the LIHG congress which was held during that first Olympic ice hockey tournament, Canada and USA were admitted on 26 April 1920 as new members thus extending the federation beyond Europe. The LIHG leadership was totally replaced in Antwerp: Acting president was now the Swiss Max Sillig, who was at that time still actively playing, the two vice presidents were the Belgian. Paul Loicq and the American Frank Fellowes.
In 1929, the congress decided in Budapest to organize from 1930 world championships every year, whereby the best placed team from Europe should win the title of European champion.

One year after the end of the war, on 27 April 1946, the delegates of the LIHG member associations met in Brussels for the first time after seven years to hold a congress. Japan and Germany were expelled from the federation; the membership of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania was declared expired because of the annexation of the Baltic states by the Soviet Union.
Austria, which had been dropped from the membership list in 1939 after its "affiliation" to Germany, could recover its membership rights after regaining official recognition. Denmark was added as a new member of the federation.

The country that invented snowboarding schooled the rest of the world in Salt Lake City. Americans won five medals in snowboarding - including gold medals in the halfpipe from Kelly Clark and Ross Powers. Canadian Hockey
Canada made up for a 50 year drought by winning the gold medal in women's and men's ice hockey. The Canadian girls beat the US 3-2 to revenge a loss in the gold medal game at the 1998 Olympics. The men's final featured two teams made up of NHL All-Stars. The Canadian lineup included Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic and Paul Kariya. The American team featured such super snipers as Brett Hull, Brian Leetch and Mike Modano. The Canadians won the game 5-2, causing wild celebrations across Canada. The last time Canada won a gold medal in ice hockey was at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway. Ghosts and Skeletons
Jimmy Shea used the death of his grandfather as inspiration and won gold in the men's skeleton race.

Belarus celebrate a famous victory
Belarus 4-3 Sweden Belarus pulled off one of the greatest shocks in the history of Olympic ice hockey as they beat Sweden's "Dream Team" of National Hockey League stars in the quarter-finals. Defenceman Vladimir Kopat scored the winning goal with two minutes and 24 seconds remaining. His shot from beyond the blueline went straight at the face of Swedish netminder Tommy Salo and he could only deflect the puck back into his unguarded net. Belarus had only one NHL player in Ruslan Salei, but they got the better of their millionnaire opponents. Salei said: "I think it's unbelievable, absolutely incredible. Nobody gave us a chance." Sweden are now out of the running for medals in what is being hailed as the greatest Olympic ice hockey upset since the United States beat the Soviet Union in 1980. Czech Republic 0-1 Russia A solitary goal from Maxim Afinogenov was enough to book Russia a place in the Olympic men's ice hockey semi-finals.

U.S. Shocks Soviets in Ice Hockey, 4-3
By Leonard Shapiro
Washington Post Staff Writer
February 23, 1980; Page D1 When the final horn sounded, players, coaches and team officials poured onto the ice and mobbed goalie Jim Craig, who stopped 36 shots. (File Photo) The U.S. won on a 20-foot wrist shot by team captain Mike Eruzione, whose name means "eruption" in Italian, with 10 minutes remaining. "I still can't believe this has happened," Eruzione said. The United States, seeded seventh in the 12-team field at the start of the competition, clinched at least a bronze medal with the victory. Following the 3-3 tie between Sweden and Finland in last night's other game, based on the complicated point system for this tournament, the United States has three points, Sweden and the Soviet Union two each and Finland one. A victory against Finland by the United States Sunday would clinch the gold for the Americans regardless of the outcome of the Soviet Union-Sweden game. If the U.S. and Finland tie, a tie in the other, later game would give the gold to the U.S., as would a victory by the Soviets. A win by Sweden in that game, however, would give the gold to that country on the basis of goal differential. Sweden and the U.S. tied in their head-to-head encounter.

In the semifinals set for Friday, Canada will face the Czech Republic for a chance to play in the gold medal final of the inaugural ''dream tournament,'' featuring the top professionals for the first time in Olympic history. And while Canada won on Wednesday, Kazakstan goalkeeper Vitaliy Yeremeyev turned in a solid game, stopping 33 shots and preventing the score from being worse than it might have been against the North American National Hockey League (NHL) stars. ''There was a 10-minute span in the first period where we didn't play well, in the second and third period we started to play with patience and perseverance and got the puck deep into their zone. I thought the Kazaks played with grit and heart,'' said Canadian coach Marc Crawford. Canada took a slim 2-1 lead into the second period and scored two goals within thirty seconds of each other to put the game away.

Kirsi Haenninen scored a hat trick and Hanna-Riikka Nieminen netted two goals to propel Finland to an 11-1 rout of host Japan in the Nagano Olympic women's ice hockey preliminary round Monday. Finland, considered a medal contender in the six-team tourney, went ahead three minutes and 54 seconds into the game at the Aqua Ring ice arena in Nagano with a Sanna Lankosaari shot from the slot on a pass from Katja Riipi. The forward combination then made it 2-0 at 18 minutes and 45 seconds into the game when Riipi slapped a rebound past Japanese goalie Haruka Watanabe following Lankosaari's powerful shot from a face-off circle. Finland, fresh from a 6-0 shutout of Sweden on Sunday in the first women's ice hockey game in winter Olympic history, completely controlled the game and drove up its onslaught later in the contest. Haenninen scored two goals in the second period and added another in the third to complete her hat trick, while Nieminen scored twice in the third as Finland blew the game open with six goals.

AP WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) After recreating one game of a lifetime, the U.S. hockey team will try to play another one that Russian coach Slava Fetisov believes was helped along by referees with a North American bias. The United States relied on its power and size to build a three-goal lead, then held on during a frantic, memorable third period for a 3-2 Olympic semifinals victory Friday over Russia 22 years to the day after their famous "Miracle on Ice" game in 1980. Up next comes the matchup all North America wanted Canada against America for the gold medal on Sunday. The United States hasn't played for the gold since 1980, when it beat Finland two days after its college-age amateurs stunned the Soviet Union super team that had dominated hockey for two decades. "You don't get to pick and choose who you will be playing against, but it certainly does make it dramatic," U.S. goalie Mike Richter said. "It should be a fantastic 60 minutes of hockey." To win the day, you must carry the play. Team USA understood this and came out with a vengeance. The Russians failed to grasp this concept until the third period.

Tommy Salo gave up a soft goal for the game-winner with 2:24 to play. AP WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) The shot couldn't possibly go in, but it did. Sweden couldn't possibly lose, but it did. And the kind of upset that couldn't possibly happen with NHL players now dominating the Olympics is a reality. Vladimir Kopat scored on a 70-foot shot that bounced wildly off goalie Tommy Salo's head with only 2:24 remaining and Belarus scored one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history Wednesday, beating Sweden 4-3 in the hockey quarterfinals. Yes, Belarus believes in miracles, too. "For sure, it is a miracle for us," Belarus goalie Andrei Mezin said. "But sometimes a gun without bullets can shoot, and that was us. We've made our place in history." Belarus-Sweden Breakdown
How better to describe Belarus' stunning 4-3 upset of Sweden than Exhibit A as to why you play the game? In competition, anything can happen. Especially in single-elimination events. And that is what this game turned into an event. And one in which Belarus found a way to slow up the high-flying Swedes between the blue lines.

Winter Olympics primer Ice Hockey: Checks and balance
Know the rules
There are some notable differences between Olympic ice hockey rules and NHL rules. 1. Icing

Icing occurs when a player sends the puck from his or her side of the center line to the other goal line. In the NHL, icing is waived off if the player's teammate touches the puck before the other team. In the Olympics, icing is called as soon as the puck crosses the goal line. Play resumes with a faceoff in the defensive zone of the team that iced the puck. 2. Rink
The Olympic hockey rink is wider than NHL rinks and has more room between the goal line and the boards. 3. Zero tolerance for fighting Don't expect to see NHL-style brawls. In Olympic hockey, fighting is penalized with automatic ejection. Just back off Maybe the most important distinction between Olympic hockey and NHL hockey is in the crease. Ones to watch Canada has dominated women's ice hockey, winning all seven world championships. At the 1998 Nagano Olympics, however, it was the Americans who prevailed, with a stunning 3-1 victory over Canada in the gold medal game. The U.S. team has enjoyed recent success in the rivalry, stringing together five straight wins over the Canadians in 2001. The teams enter the Salt Lake Games as the clear favorites to battle for the gold. Sources: International Olympic Committee; U.S. Olympic Committee; Salt Lake Organizing Committee

Modern ice hockey has changed little from the original rules established in the 1870s. The biggest changes have been in the number of players and the development of equipment.

Written by: Phill Schmitt The UNC Hockey Club officially began in the year 1974. The man responsible for initiating the activities was Lloyd Scher, a UNC graduate student. Although Scher, a Charlotte native, did not play hockey himself, he was a sports management buff and actively pushed for the creation of the club by soliciting membership through advertisements in The Daily Tar Heel. It wasn’t long before a handful of players took interest and a club was formed. The majority of the players hailed from the North, and they paid their own way as membership dues ranged in the $25 per man area, not including travel and equipment. Scher headed the organization and set up about ten games with men’s leagues and other club teams in Greensboro and Charlotte, N.C. What spirit the UNC athletes must have had back then, as the closest rink was an hour away! Three players to note on that first club were Robert Glen, a former goalie on Phillip Exeter Academy’s hockey team, Peter Griffin, a former captain of Deerfield Academy’s hockey team, and Marc Isaacscon of Greensboro. These three freshmen carried the team in its first year.

At Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, a female club team - the Love-Me-Littles - is formed in defiance of the school Archbishop. Women's teams are formed at McGill University and in the Ottawa Valley. Competitions are held in the Maritimes involving the Red and Blues from Halifax and the Kananites, another Nova Scotia team.
