Robert Merkel 04:34 Jan 9, 2003 (UTC) What about it? Zoe The violence of hockey and North American football is an important topic, but probably inappropriate for this article. In both sports violence has increased as the amount of protective equipment worn has increased. In hockey requirements that all players wear helmets have led to increases in spinal and eye injuries, as players, thinking that they are better protected, no longer avoid hitting other players head first into the boards and carry the blades of their sticks up around their heads. In the United States eight to ten football players die each year, and head injuries are common. Violent head butting is commonin tackling. The National Football League now has procedures for determining if a player has been concussed. Concussed palyers must leave the game and sit out the next. Ultimately there may have to be some reduction in the violence of these games. About a hundred years ago American football rules were made less violent because large numbers of players were dying. The Bottom Line Skates are the most important piece of gear, make sure they fit and they are appropriate for your level. If you get the wrong skates, you wont enjoy the game.
In this article I will review the following,
1. How to pick a skate that fits properly
2. Some things you should know about used skates
3. Modern techniques to make skates more comfortable
4. What sort of feet different brands of skates fit best 5. How to select the proper level of boot stiffness 6. When and how to get skates sharpened Selecting Skates That Fit One of the hardest things to understand for players who are new to the game of hockey is the way that their skates should fit. Unlike shoes, skates should be a snug fit, tight but not painfully so. The worst thing that a skater can do is purchase skates that are too big. Skates that are a little small can be fixed.

Ice Hockey: Penguins take phenom as first NHL draft pick
The Associated Press MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2005 OTTAWA Welcome to the National Hockey League, Sidney Crosby. As expected, the Pittsburgh Penguins took the teenage phenom from Canada with its No. 1 pick in the NHL draft here on Saturday. "This is amazing," Crosby said. "I'm just really relieved. It's unbelievable. I'm so happy right now." The arrival of the young superstar, who's already been compared to Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, is just what the NHL needed after the lockout that erased the 2004-05 season. For Crosby, the waiting is finally over. Crosby, who turns 18 next week, is a forward with surprising strength and masterful vision on the ice. He has a height of 5 feet 11 inches, 180 centimeters, and weighs 193 pounds, or 87.5 kilograms. A prolific scorer, Crosby won nearly every trophy in the last two seasons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
