Cornell research team makes fundamental discovery about nature of hydrogen combustion
FOR RELEASE: Nov. 2, 2000 Contact: David Brand
Office: 607-255-3651
E-Mail: deb27@cornell.edu ITHACA, N.Y. A Cornell University research team has uncovered the mechanics of a critical reaction in the combustion of hydrogen that could have implications for the future of energy production. Because of growing concerns about future energy sources based on fossil fuels concerns that range from supply to global warming considerable experimental and theoretical research is underway to better understand energy conversion processes, particularly those involving hydrogen. The element, which is readily formed through the electrolysis of water and leaves only water as its combustion byproduct, is viewed as an attractive future material for use in heating and the internal combustion engine. "The process we are studying is one of the most fundamental steps in combustion," says principal investigator Floyd Davis, associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Cornell. "Of course, ultimately the goal is to develop more efficient ways to convert energy from one form to another, but what we are doing is more fundamental: to study how energy is released in this reaction." The researchers' report appears in the latest issue (Nov. 3) of the journal

Fuel Cells and Hydrogen
Electricity is an enormously important and versatile energy carrier. Unfortunately, traditional methods of producing it are messy and inefficient, and it can't be stored in large quantities.
RMI's team offers consulting services on integrating fuel cells into new products and services, commercialization strategies, and related issues. When used in concert, electricity and hydrogen form an ideal energy-carrier system. Electricity can be generated from intermittent renewable sources, and hydrogen can be safely stored. Fuel cells can then produce on-demand electrical energy to power your home, your laptop or your cell phone, and even power your car. For a variety of reasons (see: Why Hydrogen? ), hydrogen will displace fossil fuels as the blood of our future energy infrastructure. Fuel cells will play a critical role in this coming hydrogen economy. RMI is helping leading companies, policy-makers, and researchers worldwide to accelerate this clean-energy revolution on various fronts. 167. Hydrogen Newsletter Summer/Autumn 2001: Hydrogen Is America’s Secure Fuel
With hydrogen as part of national energy strategy the U.S. could be energy selfsufficient, ensuring the nation's stability from a security, supply, and economic perspective.
http://www.HydrogenUS.com/advocate/ad62secu.htm
Hydrogen Is America’s Secure Fuel NHA Home Page NHA News Index by David Haberman, Chairman of the Board, DCH Technology, Inc. U H ydrogen use is continuing to grow in the United States, building a national core competence in hydrogen applications. It is used as an industrial chemical, an energizing additive to fossil fuel, a coolant and an aerospace fuel. Hydrogen is the lightest and most abundant element in the universe. It can exist as a gas or a liquid and can also be stored at room temperature in a solid form (hydride) as a compound. F or the past several years both industry and government have explored ways to use hydrogen as a commercial fuel. Hydrogen may be used to generate power by combustion or by using direct conversion with fuel cells. Both generation methods are highly efficient and environmentally clean. Hydrogen may be produced from electrolyzing water or from reforming fossil fuels, and is currently used in over one hundred different industries from petrochemical and glass manufacturing to food processing and electronics. The use of hydrogen is growing rapidly worldwide. The “Hydrogen Economy” will be realized when hydrogen becomes competitively priced as an energy commodity rather than as a chemical. H ydrogen energy for commercial power is primarily the result of the initial investments U.S. taxpayers have made in defense and aerospace technology. NASA is one of the largest users of hydrogen as a fuel. The Department of Defense and the Department of Transportation are expanding their interests in hydrogen both as a fuel and in the uses of fuel cells. The potentially large economic and security advantages of using locally produced hydrogen as a widespread energy carrier for both stationary and transportation applications is now recognized by both the Administration and the Congress. Enabling legislation, including reauthorization of the Hydrogen Future Act, enjoys widespread bipartisan support. The Vice President’s task force on energy also gave formal recognition to hydrogen as a key element in the National Energy Policy Report.

August 27, 2004 Scientists in Australia say they have have made a breakthrough in the efficiency of using sunlight to generate hydrogen from water. It may be a step toward an affordable source of clean energy. Now two researchers in Australia say they have made substantial progress. The Stuff of Toothpaste Titanium dioxide (TiO ) is widely used as a white pigment in paint, paper, cosmetics, sunscreens, and toothpastes. It is found in its purest form in rutile, a beach sand but is also extracted from certain ores. Rio Tinto, a mining company that produces titanium oxide, helps fund Nowotny's and Sorrell's research. Nowotny and Sorrell announced their breakthrough today at the International Conference on Materials for Hydrogen Energy, hosted by the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They believe they have found a way to considerably improve the productivity of the solar hydrogen process (using sunlight to extract hydrogen from water) using a device made out of titanium dioxide. "This is potentially huge, with a market the size of all the existing markets for coal, oil, and gas combined,'' Nowotny said in a news statement released ahead of the conference. "Based on our research results, we know we are on the right track."

Senator Feinstein and Jaclyn D'Arcy
in Washington, D.C. What is Kids 4 Hydrogen? Kids 4 Hydrogen supports all renewable, sustainable and clean methods of producing hydrogen. We believe that the cleanest way to produce hydrogen is to use an electrolyzer powered by solar energy. As the world moves towards a hydrogen economy, Kids 4 Hydrogen will promote and support efforts to keep hydrogen production as clean as possible. Convert Your ICE Car to Use Hydrogen Gas Rather than wait 100 years for all of the ICE cars to disappear off the roads, Kids 4 Hydrogen encourages everyone to convert the ICE cars they drive today to use hydrogen gas. This will help eliminate air pollution and end our reliance on foreign oil sooner than simply waiting for car manufacturers, energy companies, and the public to embrace the hydrogen economy. There are several ways to redesign your existing car to use hydrogen gas. The American Hydrogen Association (AHA) offers several seminars a year. Visit their website at

Welcome to the Web Site of Hydrogen Now! The mission of Hydrogen Now! is to accelerate the use of renewable hydrogen. An undeniable truth of life: choices involve consequences. As far as our energy choices go, choosing to burn fossil fuels almost exclusively for the last century and a half has brought tremendous development and opportunities, but it has not been without consequences. Although we will continue to use petroleum for some time, we have reached the point in human history where we must evolve to a lighter, cleaner fuel. Browse our site to learn more about hydrogen.
