    FUTURE POWER: DTE to unveil hydrogen energy park
    Fuel-cell vehicles to be displayed
    July 15, 2005 BY ALEJANDRO BODIPO-MEMBA FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER With an eye on future U.S. energy needs, DTE Energy Co. plans to unveil Michigan's first Hydrogen Technology Park on Saturday in Southfield, where hydrogen fuel cells and the vehicles they power will be on display for the public. The grand opening of Michigan's first multiuse, renewable hydrogen-fueling station has brought together the utility and automotive industries to develop alternative power sources that don't rely on petroleum. The five-year project, funded in a 50-50 venture with the U.S. Department of Energy, will study the possibilities of commercial use of hydrogen power. DTE, Michigan's largest power company, has teamed with

    Most of the world's current supply of hydrogen is derived from fossil fuels and, therefore, most hydrogen does not eliminate the emission of GHG pollutants that are connected with climate change. The canadian association for renewable energies argues that, only when an eligible renewable energy technology is used for electrolysis or non-hydrocarbon derivation process, can the resulting hydrogen be considered as renewable or the fuel cell considered as clean. What Is A Fuel Cell?
    In principle, a fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes sandwiched around an electrolyte. Oxygen passes over one electrode and hydrogen over the other, generating electricity, water and heat. A fuel cell produces electricity. The fuel cell is similar to a battery. It produces electricity using chemicals . The chemicals are usually very simple, often just hydrogen and oxygen. In this case the hydrogen is the "fuel" that the fuel cell uses to make electricity. Another very important difference is that fuel cells do not run down like batteries. As long as the fuel and oxygen is supplied to the cell it will keep producing electricty for ever. The oxygen needed by a fuel cell is usually simply obtained from air.

      This library page holds a collection of hydrogen energy resources. But please do NOT call Hydrogen a fuel. Hydrogen is only an energy
      transport media. It is incapable of delivering net on-the-books BTU's
      of energy. Just as with a flywheel or lead acid, you'll first have to fill
      hydrogen with energy before you can empty it. Naturally, no non-nuclear means is known to make terrestrial hydrogen
      that does not consume considerably more energy than it delivers. Thus,
      terrestrial hydrogen is a "pollution amplifier" that INCREASES the
      pollution of the underlying fundamental energy source. It is utterly ludicrous to claim that terrestrial hydrogen is in any way,
      shape, or form "nonpolluting". Note that commercial hydrogen is nearly always produced through the reformation of methane. But the methane really has to want to reform. Please also note that because of the staggering loss of exergy , use of electrolysis for bulk hydrogen apps is a really, really dumb thing to do.

    'Apollo Program' for hydrogen energy needed, Stanford researcher says
    What if all the vehicles now on the road in the United States were suddenly powered by hydrogen fuel cells? Stanford researchers say in a June 24 article in the journal Science that such a conversion would improve air quality, health and climateespecially if wind were used to generate the electricity needed to split water and make hydrogen in a pollutionless process. Similarly to how gas is pumped into tanks, hydrogen would be pumped into fuel cells, which rely on chemistry, not combustion, to power vehicles. (As hydrogen flows through fuel-cell compartments, it reacts with oxygen to produce water and energy.) Associate Professor Mark Z. Jacobson and graduate student Whitney Goldsborough Colella (both in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department) and Consulting Professor David M. Golden (Mechanical Engineering Department) report that annually such a conversion could prevent millions of cases of respiratory illness and tens of thousands of hospitalizations and save more lives than were lost in the World Trade Center attacks. "Converting all the current vehicles to fuel cell vehicles powered by wind would save 3,000 to 6,000 lives in the United States annually, and it could be done at a fuel cost that's comparable to the cost of gasoline, and less than the cost of gasoline when you consider the health effects of gasoline," said Jacobson, who has no financial interest in any wind or hydrogen endeavor but whose commitment to clean air is manifest in his choice of car (a Toyota Prius), house (it's solar-powered) and career (atmospheric scientist).

    MOLECULAR HYDROGEN AND WATER VAPOUR EMISSIONS IN A GLOBAL HYDROGEN ENERGY ECONOMY
    Zittel, M. Altmann, Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik GmbH Published in the Proceedings of the 11 th World Hydrogen Energy Conference, Stuttgart, Germany, June 1996 ABSTRACT In a global renewable energy economy including hydrogen as energy carrier, emissions of molecular hydrogen and water vapour will play the dominant role as all other emissions will be sharply reduced, most of them to zero. Reviewing the natural and anthropogenic sources and sinks of molecular hydrogen and assuming ten percent losses of hydrogen over the whole production, distribution and utilisation chain it is estimated that in a hydrogen energy economy hydrogen emissions will be about four times higher than those caused by the use of fossil energy resources. Thus reducing the hydrogen losses to a level of 2 - 3 %, hydrogen emission levels will be in the same range as fossil hydrogen emissions. Anthropogenic water vapour emissions on the other hand can be shown to be around 0.005 % of natural water evaporation. The present combustion of fossil energy carriers containing water and/or hydrogen as well as the evaporation of water in the cooling systems of electricity generation cause water vapour emissions exceeding the projected emissions due to the utilisation of hydrogen by roughly a factor of two. 1. (The text below is based on contents of a hydrogen report produced in 2002.) The use of hydrogen fuel holds significant potential for diversifying Hawaii's energy mix, especially in the transportation and distributed power generation sectors. It is believed that this could lead to a decrease in Hawaii's dependence on fossil fuels; higher energy efficiencies; and a reduction in polluting emissions and greenhouse gases. Hydrogen's proponents view it as a long-term energy solution because:
    • Hydrogen could serve as a potentially inexhaustible supply of fuel; Hydrogen can be produced using several renewable energy resources; Hydrogen fuel cells convert chemical energy into electricity with higher efficiencies than combustion processes; Hydrogen improves the utilization of electricity from intermittent and distributed renewable resources; Hydrogen is nonpolluting and nontoxic;

    Hydrogen Power: The "Post-Petroleum" Solution Did You Know...? While the current administration has begun to acknowledge the possibilities inherent in hydrogen power, the $1.2 billion it has allocated to jump-start the industry is miniscule compared to what is realistically needed to make the transition to a hydrogen economy a reality. If hydrogen is truly "America’s clean energy choice," as the Department of Energy has averred, the government must elevate hydrogen as a fiscal priority. It must redirect the multiple billions in subsidies and tax incentives it has traditionally showered on fossil fuels towards hydrogen, the 21st century's most promising alternative resource. NASA is already the primary user of hydrogen as an energy carrier. By becoming the fledgling industry's first major commercial customer and converting its own sizeable fleets and infrastructure to accept hydrogen, our government can accelerate the affordable mass production of hydrogen-ready technologies. This will contribute to economies of scale in their manufacture and price, and thus to improvements in production, delivery and use. It will thereby ensure hydrogen's broad-market application and appeal. With the public's convenient access to hydrogen thus assured, it can put its vast federal resources in service of a vigorous, credible public campaign to shed permanently the American habit of fossil fuel reliance.
