More and more colors and shapes of hydrangeas have hit the market, offering gardeners a choice of everything from the elegant lacecaps and giant globe-shaped blooms to the pure white panicles of the native oakleafs. White mophead hydrangea
Botanical name: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Margaret Moseley'
About the plant: DeKalb County gardener Margaret Moseley has grown this pure white form of big-leaf hydrangea for 40 years. Everyone who visits her garden during June when the plant is covered with medium-size, globe-shaped flowers goes crazy over it. As the flowers age, a tiny blue dot appears in the middle (the spot may be pink if the soil is more alkaline). Margaret bought the plant at a small country nursery and has never seen another just like it. Jane Bath at Land Arts is introducing this selection to the public.

These new introductions represent the latest breakthroughs in breeding that have produced new flower and foliage colors that will knock you out! Most gardeners are familiar with Hydrangea macrophylla and its two best known varieties, mophead and lacecap. Your grandmother probably grew the basic, but beautiful mophead variety with its pink, white, red or blue pompon flowers that seem to last forever. Over the last ten years or so, the lacecap (which is what a hydrangea looks like in the wild) has become more prevalent. Lacecaps have flower heads that are filled with tiny fertile flowers that in turn are surrounded by colorful sterile florets.

These showy shrubs, which will grow quickly in partial shade, are also prized for their ability to change flower color depending on the acidity or pH balance of the soil in which they are growing. Hydrangeas for Everyone (ARA) - Hydrangeas are among the most popular flowering garden plants. Prized for their huge, dramatic flowers, they can literally stop traffic. Yet cold winters and late frosts often damage the flower buds and prevent blooming. Fear of losing the flowers has kept many gardeners from enjoying these beautiful plants. This need not be the case, because with careful selection all gardeners can enjoy hydrangeas and their remarkable flower displays.
When choosing a hydrangea it is very important to pay attention to the type of species or variety. Big leaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) are very popular for their large colorful flowers but unfortunately they are the least hardy. Lush green plants that do not bloom every year may disappoint gardeners. The blooms often fail because their flower buds are formed in fall of the previous year; a hard winter, an untimely frost or inappropriate pruning may damage the buds and the flowers will be lost.
Native to the mild coastal regions of Japan, big leaf hydrangeas are not well suited to the dramatic temperature swings of continental North America. These hydrangeas are best reserved for gardeners on the East and West Coast who have a milder maritime climate similar to Japan. Care must also be taken to prune at the proper time. Prune only lightly, while the plants are blooming in June.

Changing the Color of Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are fascinating in that, unlike most other plants, the color of their flowers can change dramatically. They can be a brilliant bright pink or a deep true blue depending on the soil. Hydrangeas often change color on their own when they are planted or transplanted. They are adjusting to their new environment. It is not unusual to see several different colors on one shrub the next year after planting. It is much easier to change a hydrangea from pink to blue than it is from blue to pink. Changing a hydrangea from pink to blue entails adding aluminum sulfate to the soil, while changing it from blue to pink means subtracting aluminum from the soil or adding lime.
To change the color of your hydrangeas, follow the tips listed below:
Change to Pink
a few tricks that might work:
Change to Blue
To obtain a blue hydrangea, aluminum must be present in the soil. To ensure that aluminum is present, aluminum sulfate may be added to the soil around the hydrangea.

Caring for Hydrangeas
Posted by: tiffyt Jul 21 2004, 04:40 AM Hi All,
I planted three new Endless Summer Hydrangeas about a month ago. They appear to be doing nicely thus far. One of the plants has two flower heads that are beginning to appear. I'm wondering if you all think I should cut those flower heads off so that the plant can use its energy to establish a good root system and fill out in size which are my two primary concerns right now. I know that they say to do this with newly planted annuals for the first two weeks and I practice this and have been shocked at how much better the annuals look later in the season because of it!
I gave the hydrangeas a good feeding of plant tone when I first planted them and they get decent amounts of water and sunlight. Anything else I should do with them? Will they need pruning next spring? I've been reading on these, but it seems every book tells me to do something different with them!

Growing hydrangeas
The hydrangea is an easy-to-grow, trouble-free plant that's big on impact. It's no wonder that hydrangeas are the top summer shrub in France. They appeal to the stylish French because they need very little attention to maintain their beautiful appearance. Kiwis have come to appreciate hydrangeas enormously in recent years too, for much the same reasons. You can plant them, preferably in dappled shade, do little to them, apart from applying a bit of water during dry weather times, and sit back and admire their beauty. A comfy outdoor seat or a hammock among the hydrangeas creates a great place to retreat to on a balmy summer evening. The flowers of hydrangeas, of which there are great numbers if you plant a group, can be picked for indoor decoration too and they last superbly in water. Liddle Wonder's range of hydrangeas is right up with the play in terms of new varieties (such as the New Zealand raised 'Trophy', which is a stunning white) as well as older varieties which have stood the test of time, such as 'Geoffrey Chadbund' and the charming lacecap variety 'Blue Wave'.

Cultivating color and bloom in the summer garden can be difficult but hydrangeas are one of the most popular flowering shrubs in southern New England.

Summer Garden Color
Cultivating color and bloom in the summer garden can be difficult but there are some award winning trees and shrubs that shine in the summer. We joined Bob Aube, co-owner of Morningstar Nursery in West Kingston, for the second of a two part series to look at trees and shrubs that bring interest to the summer landscape. Stewartia
Dappled Willow Salix integra 'Hakuro Nishiki'

This is a small tree or large shrub (3-5 feet in height) suitable for most gardens, provided they receive fairly plentiful sun. Elegant, with long, slightly drooping branches when it reaches maturity, in its earlier years Salix integra 'Hakuro nishiki' is enjoyably boisterous. The young branches develop in all directions, creating a starburst of color and interest. Eventually they start to bend downwards under their own weight. Visual benefits at other times of the year include delicate catkins along the stems from early April, quickly followed by pairs of attractively marked, oblong, bright green leaves. Although willows are often associated with waterside situations, 'Hakuro-nishiki' will also thrive on drier soils. Potentilla - Shrubby Cinquefoil
Potentillas prefer well-drained, reasonably rich soil, but will tolerate clay, rocky, or slightly alkaline soils as well. They are a quite durable plant, tolerating drought, flooding, extreme cold, and will easily survive transplanting. Potentillas should be planted in a sunny area that receives light shade in the hottest part of the day to prevent the flower color from fading. They are hardy in areas as cold as USDA zone 2, however they will not perform very well in climates warmer than zone 7. Propagation can be accomplished by division in the spring, softwood cuttings in the summer, or from seeds sown in the fall. Prune out the oldest stems in late winter to prevent the plant from becoming leggy.
