LIVING LIGHTER WITH LESS: ALL THE CLEANING PRODUCTS YOU NEED
We all know that, regardless of a home’s type, size and cost, keeping the home reasonably free of dirt and mess is critical to mental and physical well being. The smaller the home, and the more humans and other creatures living in it, the more that sanitation and neatness count. However, time and resources for cleaning are often limited. So what are some ways of keeping a home, large or small, reasonably clean in minimum time with minimum money? While we’re at it, why not try to make product and material choices that leave a light footprint on the planet and are healthiest for you and yours? The ironic part, it turns out, is that, despite all the hoopla for the new-better-different this and that, when it comes to cleaning, healthiest is also simplest and cheapest. ALL THE CLEANING PRODUCTS YOU NEED There are so many cleaning products on the market. However, if you’re not vigilant, you can run up a big bill and bring unwanted chemicals into your home. Then there’s the cabinet–choking clutter created by all the bottles and stuff. So what cleaners do we really need? We can keep the home clean under ten products and do it while

I just planted it today, and it looks right at home in its new place. I am very pleased with the hydrangea and with this company, and (thanks to their catalog of lovely hydrangeas) will undoubtedly be ordering from them again. With billowing clouds of white flowers, these native shrubs will lift your garden to higher ground, In the woodlands of the Deep South grows one of the finest hydrangeas in the world, one with a truly Southern soul. Beginning in late spring and continuing through early summer, the white blossoms of oakleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia) illuminate the forests. Their creamy spires rise up and wave in the wind, welcoming blue skies. Though the blossoms would be enough to satisfy most, these elegant deciduous shrubs offer something special throughout the year and deserve a generous place in your garden. A Show for Every Season One of the best things about oakleaf hydrangeas is that they perform in winter, spring, summer, and fall. When the days are blustery and cold, the cinnamon-colored peeling bark adds a bit of warmth. As the light lengthens, richly textured, oak shaped leaves emerge bright green to greet spring. When the weather warms, cone-shaped blooms appear when few other shrubs are flowering. Its blossoms continue to fill the air with clouds of coolness to lessen the heat of summer as the mercury soars. Finally, autumn arrives, and the leaves slowly begin to turn brilliant reds, oranges, and maroons. For weeks, they salute the fall with a kaleidoscope of colors.

species. But hydrangeas number among those species for which the word remarkable can be used without exaggeration. How many plant families can have their history traced back 70 million years; are native to three continents; contain members that are bushes, trees, and vines; are both deciduous and evergreen; and whose flowers can completely change color from year to year or season to season? Not to mention that almost all hydrangeas are extremely hardy, easy to grow, and tolerate both full sun and partial shade. A variety of hydrangea exists to suit any garden, from clay pots to meticulously cultivated acres. The genus hydrangea is actually divided into at least eight subsections, which are further broken down into at least a dozen species and hundreds of cultivars though there are so many different kinds of hydrangeas that even the botanical nomenclaturists are often in disagreement as to the exact number. It simplifies matters that the most common types of hydrangeas seen in nurseries today belong to only five species:

Pruning Hydrangeas
I planted two hydrangeas in the fall, and as winter arrived they appear to have died. They have bare limbs and are brown-looking. What did I do wrong? I live in Zone 9.
Ellen Bartrum, Georgia
Dear Ellen,
Most hydrangeas are deciduous, and it is quite normal for them to lose their leaves in the late fall to winter. As soon as the spring days warm up, you should see the buds starting to swell and to leaf out.
Pruning your hydrangeas is an important step in their care. Although you do not say which type of hydrangea you planted, most of the large-leaf ( H. macrophylla ) types commonly sold as potted plants in bloom and the oak-leaf ( H. quercifolia

Growing Hydrangeas
Tips for the care and cultivation of hydrangeas.
Hydrangeas are hardy shrubs that thrive under most conditions. They can fill up awkward gaps in your garden, giving welcome color and texture during the late spring and summer months. If you prune them back in the winter they remain unobtrusive during those months when you would rather not have large, wet, unproductive bushes on show. And they have the unusual characteristic of having the ability to bloom in more than one color, depending on the soil conditions. There are three main types of hydrangea, and their flower heads are the main differing characteristic. Mopheads are the common type, found in many gardens. They are what most people think of when they think of hydrangeas. Mopheads have large, round heads of compact blooms. The flower head varies in size between three and twelve inches, however is usually found in the middle of this range. Lacecaps are flatter than mopheads. Lacier blossoms surround a cluster of flowers in the center of the flower head. The third type is called panicles and is considerably less well known. They can either be long and pointed, or similar in appearance to a mophead. They will usually flower for very long periods and will tolerate a lot of sun. As mentioned above, hydrangeas can be encouraged to bloom in different colors, with one or two exceptions. White hydrangeas will not change their colors, no matter what you add to the soil. Not all varieties of pink hydrangeas are amenable to color-changing tactics, either. Check with your nursery when ordering them, if this is important to you.

Shrub of the Month Shrub of the Month: August
Arboretum Director, Vincent Simeone Hydrangea (Hydrangea sp.) Hydrangeas are among the most diverse and widely used shrubs in the world, with dozens of species and hundreds of varieties used in private and public gardens, both large and small. The voluptuous flowers of hydrangea are available in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes from large globes to delicate lacey types. Some of the most beautiful and unique varieties can be found in Europe, where they have been an integral part of gardening for centuries. Our fascination with hydrangeas is the result of our great admiration for the rich colors that paint our landscape. These dependable shrubs will flower in mid to late summer and frequently through the fall. Once the cold weather arrives, hydrangeas will continue to display interest as the faded flowers dry on the plant and persist in winter.
Proper pruning techniques are essential for the care and cultivation of these popular flowering shrubs. Pruning of hydrangea is quite complex since each hydrangea species has a different requirement. Careful research must be done to make certain that the proper techniques are being applied. For example, hydrangeas either bloom on current seasons growth or previous seasons growth depending on the species or variety chosen. Because of this, different pruning techniques are performed to maximize flower production and vigorous growth. Detailed requirements are addressed under each species below.

Gardeners who think of hydrangeas only as the traditional mops of blue or pink should check out the diversity of hydrangea forms, colors and textures that can bring drama to the landscape from mid-summer through fall. Hydrangeas can display blossoms that are lacy or carried in cone-shaped clusters. Flower colors include blues, light to deep pinks, a range of purples, white and even variegated. Foliage can have interesting texture and be colorful in both summer and fall, and some climbing hydrangeas have evergreen leaves. On top of that, dwarf forms are available for today's more compact gardens. ``There's no other shrub that brings the garden back to life in August and September, and even October,'' said Dan Hinkley, co-director of Heronswood Nursery in Kingston. ``They don't even kick off until mid-July, and then they really take off in August.'' Still, hydrangeas have gotten a bum rap from some as an ``old-lady'' plant, said Janet McCammon, a certified horticulturist at Molbak's in Woodinville. ``I've never thought of them that way. I've always thought of them as a staple of the garden,'' McCammon said, adding they remain quite popular with Molbak's customers. Hinkley believes the mophead hydrangeas have become ``vulgarized to a certain degree'' by being so available in grocery stores in those little foil-wrapped pots sort of becoming the ``new chrysanthemum,'' he mused.
