Generally, H. macrophylla, H. quercifolia, H. serrata, and H. paniculata prefer full sun to part shade, requiring more shade in the South and tolerating more sun in the North. H. m. 'Blue Billow' is an exception, preferring full to part shade everywhere. 'Nikko Blue' is tolerant of full shade, but blooms best with more sun. All prefer moist, well-drained, humusy soil; acidic soil produces richest blue shade in the Hortensia or Mophead varieties. Fertilize once in early spring with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants. GROWTH : Fast grower; can grow 12-24" and more in a good season with proper care. SUGGESTED USE : Foundation plantings; mixed or shrub borders; on the corner of a house. Lovely when combined with Astilbes or Oriental Lilies in shades of rose, pink, and white. PRUNING : The pruning of Hydrangea shrubs varies by variety. Please refer to the following list for the specific variety's pruning needs:

How to force long-overdue hydrangeas
By John Arbogast
Got a horticulture question? Click on my name.
Q: Is there anything that I can do to make my two 10-year old and one 12-year-old hydrangeas bloom well? I’ve only had a single bloom in all these years. A: Transplant them in mid-fall to an area that receives all-day sun, has moist soil and provides protection from winter winds. The goals are to provide them with the maximum environment and then hope for the best. Pruning hydrangeas improperly can impede flowering, but exact pruning directions can vary among the many hydrangea varieties. Pruning most landscape shrubs soon after they should bloom and cutting to thin out crowded twigs are always good general-purpose recommendations.
Q: When and how should we divide our Lavender de Province?

The Forgotten Beauty of Dahlias and Hollyhocks
by Virginia Hayes Hollyhocks are another favorite. The plants are biennial, meaning it takes them two years to reach the flowering stage, but once you have established them in your garden, they will be blooming reliably ever after. The diversity of colors ranges from white through the palest yellows and pinks on through red and a deep shade that is almost black. Find an out-of-the-way place for them or put them in the back of the border and they will faithfully reward you year after year. Virginia Hayes, curator of Ganna Walska Lotusland, will answer your gardening questions. Address them to Gardens, The Independent, 122 W. Figueroa St., S.B., CA 93101. These knockouts have a 70-million-year-old pedigree
Plant enthusiasts have a tendency to be rather florid, if you'll pardon the pun, when they describe their favorite species. But hydrangeas number among those species for which the word remarkable can be used without exaggeration. How many plant families can have their history traced back 70 million years, are native to three continents, contain members that are bushes, trees, and vines, are both deciduous and evergreen, and whose flowers can completely change color from year to year or season to season? Not to mention that almost all hydrangeas are extremely hardy, easy to grow, and tolerate both full sun and partial shade. A variety of hydrangea exists to suit any garden, from clay pots to meticulously cultivated acres.
The genus hydrangea is actually divided into at least eight subsections, which are further broken down into at least a dozen species and hundreds of cultivarsthough there are so

Cultivation Requirements for Growing Hydrangeas in the Garden
February 24, 1999
We moved into our home 7 years ago and inherited a large hydrangea plant. Each year it grows taller and bushier and looks very healthy. (It is now about 5 ft.) The problem is it has never bloomed (well it did get one flower - a bluish one that turned white - about 2 years ago) It is located in a bed by our deck - it gets afternoon sun - sometimes very hot sun and this makes it wilt but it bounces back after a good drink. The soil is acid. We live in Canada in the Kootenays, warm summers, lots of snow in winter. I really want this plant to bloom the blue flowers I can imagine, but it just grows leaves. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. THANKS.
Hydrangea macrophylla is hardy to zone 8, however temperatures below 25 degrees F. will kill the new buds. (see the hardiness zone map... ) Hydrangeas need an abundance of water (hydrangea means water tub in Greek) , partial to full sun,and very rich soil. The spent flowers of Hydrangeas should be removed as soon as possible to allow the plant to direct it's strength to growing and producing new buds rather than seeds. If you didn't add

57. Hydrangeas
If you have hydrangeas in your garden, you can make beautiful dried flowers fromthem. The secret to perfectly dried hydrangeas is choosing the right time
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/county/smith/tips/trees/hydrangea.html
HYDRANGEAS BRIGHTEN LANDSCAPE One plant that stands out all summer with vivid color is the Hydrangea. In shaded areas, its large blooms of white, pink, or blue will outshine all others. Originally from the Orient, it has been planted all over the world. The most common variety in our area is the French Hydrangea.. Easy to grow in rich, moist soil, it has a large, mounding shape and can achieve heights of four feet in a year. The large foliage is dark green, but being deciduous, is gone in the winter. Blooms appear on previous year's growth, so prune only the stems that produced this year's flowers; otherwise you will not have blooms next year. The color of the bloom can be adjusted. White blooms will always be white, while the blue or pink can be controlled by the pH of the soil (the closer to a balanced pH of 6.5, the lighter the color). Add agricultural lime in the fall for deeper pinks or aluminum sulfate for darker blues. The Oakleaf Hydrangea grows larger, the flowers are cone-shaped and white, and the foliage turns a beautiful maroon in the fall. The unique tree form, "Peegee", grows up to 15 feet and blooms later. Your nurseryman can help you choose one for your particular landscape. Paul Ferguson, Smith County Master Gardener

All types prefer humus-rich, well drained soil. Most love moisture but do not require much watering if planted in partial shade or shade. BIGLEAF, CLIMBING and ASPERA hydrangeas strongly prefer part shade but may tolerate full sun if irrigated. Among the Bigleafs, LACECAPS tend to tolerate sun better than MOPHEADS but may not color as well as in part shade. SMOOTH, PANICLE and OAKLEAF hydrangeas tolerate full sun after being established (2 years with adequate water). or a good all-purpose fertilizer. Changing Flower Color One of the most common questions about hydrangeas is how to alter the blossom color. While Bigleaf varieties are bred for a certain color, that color may be altered somewhat by adding specific elements to the soil when planting (adjusting the soil pH), and each fall or spring, well ahead of bloom time. For blue - add peat, pine needles or aluminum sulphate (sold as "blueing formula," which may be applied any time of year) and for pinks and reds - superphosphate or lime. Tap water is often slightly alkaline and thus may turn flowers more pink, especially in containers. Hydrangeas planted in shadier conditions may require less watering, thus, retaining more blue color. Some varieties are resistant to any color changes.
