Hydrangeas have large blooms that bring flamboyant colour to the garden in late summer and autumn. They're easy to grow, dependable and improve with age. Use them in big, bold groups in the border, or even in large containers.

Mophead hydrangeas (with rounded heads of large flowers) come from Japan where the native species with lacecap flowers (flattened heads of small flowers) have been grown for hundreds of years. When these plants reached the west in the 18th century they caused a sensation, initially being treated as tender and grown indoors. The increase in new varieties with improved colour began 100 years ago in French, German and English nurseries. There's now a bewildering choice and even the experts can't always distinguish between them.

Tips for Fall: Mulch
One of the chores that befall every gardener, often several times a year, is the laborious task of mulching. While many of us view this as an odious task best ranked with mucking stables or raking leaves (I rank these two very closely), I view this mission as my way of helping Mother Nature herself improve my garden. In my mind there is no better way to change the soil in your garden than mulching; not raining fertilizer and chemicals upon it, not amending soil, and no, especially not plowing, tilling, or cultivating. Mulching is the finest thing you can do for a garden bed and I will use the rest of this space to put to rest any doubts you may have as to the veracity of that statement... Read more

Hydrangeas
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-1005

Add drama, sophistication, elegance and colors that change at the drop of lime with heavenly hydrangea. Hydrangeas have become popular because they're big, they're bold and they show a lot of color around the whole landscape garden area, says hydrangea expert Bob Miller. The two fundamental types of hydrangea are the mophead ( figure A ), the most familiar big-leaf variety, and lacecaps ( figure B ), which derive their name from the sterile flowers surrounding fertile flowers in the center of each flower cluster.
Figure A
Figure B
Figure C Figure D To turn hydrangeas pink or blue, it's simply a matter of an amendment. Adjusting the soil pH (the measure of acidity or alkalinity in the soil) will change the color of many hydrangea blooms. For pink, raise the pH using limestone ( figure C ), and for blue, lower the pH using elemental sulfur ( figure D ). Depending on the aluminum sulfate that is used or the acidity of the soil, pink hydrangeas can be turned purple or blue. However, that also depends on the variety. Some varieties are resistant to any color change, but if you want to experiment, container plants respond to color manipulation easier than landscape shrubs.

Hydrangeas
Way to Grow : Episode WTG-223

Gardener and author Georgia Raimondi joins host Jackie Cicchino to provide an interesting and insightful lesson on hydrangeas. Raimondi discusses several of the more popular varieties and explains how the pH level of the soil can actually change hydrangeas' bloom color. She also provides tips on soil and light requirements and reviews pruning and drying techniques.
  • Hydrangeas include more than 40 species and 500 cultivars, several of which are shrub varieties. In addition to boasting extraordinary beauty, hydrangea shrubs are also remarkably easy to grow. They require moist, well-drained soil and dappled or light shade; many will also thrive in morning sun. (Exposure to hot afternoon sun will cause wilting and loss of color in the blooms.)
  • The plants need only minimal fertilizergenerally, a small quantity in early spring is sufficientand require only occasional pruning and pest control. (If hydrangea leaves turn yellow, this indicates the presence of powdery mildew, which can be controlled with a multi-purpose fungicide.)
  • Many hydrangeas will hold their blooms for an extended length of time, often from mid-summer to fall.

Of all the plants that garden designers Freeland and Sabrina Tanner grow in their Napa garden, oakleaf hydrangea (H. quercifolia 'Snowflake') is a standout. This 4-to 6-foot-tall selection looks good year-round. In mid-spring, 6-inch-long lime green and white flowers appear. As the season progresses, each floret produces a new one until, by the end of summer, the blooms extend to 12 inches or more. In fall, foliage turns shades of purple and red. The plants peeling bark is also attractive in winter.

Pruning Hydrangeas
Presenter: Peter Cundall [09/07/2005]
Peter’s pruning hydrangea tips.
Happiness is pruning. But total happiness is pruning hydrangeas , especially when they need it. Start low and remove the very old, and big stuff. Look for the old wood. It means that’s where the new wood will start. Look closely for the big powerful buds, which will send up new canes and be absolutely fantastic.
The new buds are formed in alternative pairs. Pick the fattest pair and prune to just above them. Do this all over the plant. The further you prune, the bigger the flowers will be. If you prune too hard, you won't get any flowers but you will get beautiful foliage.
By the way, every one of the pieces, especially the young bits, can be shoved into the ground. In fact they're so easy to strike, that if you grab one and drop kick it, it will take root before it hits the ground. That's how easy they are to form new plants. But leave all the big, fat buds for masses of new, huge flowers. “I'm feeling so much better, and I know for a fact that this hydrangea is now feeling delirious with joy.” About Us Contact Us

Hydrangeas
Presenter: Jane Edmanson [22/3/2002]
Hydrangeas are very easy and rewarding to grow and have many desirable features including good showing ability, lots of colour, toughness and unlike most shrubs they tolerate shade and moist conditions. Hydrangeas are a tried and true plant that form colourful garden borders with rhododendrons and other woodland shrubs. They also make an excellent cut flower, fresh or dried. The George Tindale Memorial Gardens and Parks in Victoria have a spectacular array of trees and shrubs with an understorey of hydrangeas. The hydrangea collection exceeds 130 different species and cultivars, all of which are listed under the ornamental plant growers association. Thus, there are plenty of horticulturally-sound ones to choose from including climbers.
Hydrangea macrophylla is the most well known species, of which there are two shapes mopheads and lacecaps Mopheads are almost purely composed of sterile flowers, where as the lacecaps have a few large flat sterile flowers around the edge of a mass of tiny true flowers. For this reason, they are commonly called hen and chicks. The non-fertile flowers last a long time because they are never fertilised or produce seed. The Oak Leaf Hydrangea (H.
