The Hurricane Hunters We've passed the peak of the hurricane season, and what a season it's been. We flew nearly every day since July 30th, sometimes into two different storms simultaneously. In August and September, we logged over 80 flights into the storms, although we haven't yet beaten our record flying in 1995 (not that it is a record we WANT to break). This season got personal, with Category 3 Ivan taking a side-swipe at our home base. We safely evacuated all of our aircraft out of harm's way (we'll fly 'em, but we don't choose to ride out a hurricane on the ground), while at the same time continued to fly both Ivan and Jeanne around the clock. Note: When there is an active storm, see our latest reports and visit the National Hurricane Center for bulletins and advisories, and if you're under threat, please tune in to your local media. What are Hurricanes?
Most people associate twisters with tornadoes, but in fact tropical twisters come from hurricanes. Hurricanes are what scientists call "strong Tropical Cyclones". They are formed when large areas of the ocean become heated, and the air pressure over that area drops. This causes thunderstorms and strong surface winds. Cyclones develop over tropical or sub-tropical waters (for example, in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, or in the Pacific). As they travel long distances gathering energy from the ocean, they are likely to be classified as strong Tropical Cyclones. When the winds of a tropical storm reach 74 mph, then the storm is classified as a hurricane. One of NASA's most important missions is to develop an understanding of the total Earth system and study the effects of natural and human- induced changes on the global environment. To achieve these goals, NASA has developed satellites and ground programs which study and monitor hurricanes and other climatic events. ESE Kids Only Home ESE Homepage NASA

(Photo: NOAA) What is it? A tropical wave that begins spinning around a center of low pressure is called a tropical depression. Tropical depressions have maximum sustained wind speeds of less than 40 mph at the ocean's surface. When the maximum winds reach 40 mph or greater, the storm changes into a tropical storm, and it's given a name. Once the maximum winds reach 74 mph or greater, the storm becomes a hurricane. Each hurricane has an eye of calm winds and low pressure, surrounded by an eyewall of intense thunderstorms with high winds and heavy rain. Spiral bands of intense thunderstorms spiral into the eyewall of the hurricane from the outer parts of the storm. The generic name for a hurricane is tropical cyclone. These storms are called typhoons when they occur in the western Pacific Ocean, and cyclones in the Indian and southern Pacific Oceans.

    Why Cover Hurricanes?
Hurricanes are among the most violent storms people suffer in the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic states. They are news before they happen, while they are happening, and sometimes for years after they happen. Some hurricanes, like Hurricane Andrew, are mostly wind events. Others carry their punch with water. Last year’s Hurricane Floyd was such a water event — unleashing torrents of muddy, polluted water upon thousands of people in North Carolina, Virginia, and New Jersey. Born far out in the Atlantic, Floyd generated winds topping 135 knots as it advanced upon the southeast U.S. coast September 13, 1999. After menacing Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, Floyd made landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, on September 16 with sustained winds near 110 mph. The maximum storm surge struck at high tide, contributing to extensive overwash, dune retreat, and damage to homes on barrier islands. The water dumped by Floyd was devastating. Rainfall totaled a record 15 to 20 inches. Storm surges reached 10 feet in coastal North Carolina. This rain fell on lands still saturated from Hurricane Dennis less than two weeks earlier, and runoff was greater because water could not soak in. A month later, Hurricane Irene dumped another 5-10 inches of new rain on some of the areas hardest by Floyd. Floyd killed 57 people — the deadliest U.S. hurricane since Agnes in 1972. Most of those killed drowned in North Carolina as rivers unable to handle the deluge swelled beyond known flood plains. Damage estimates topped $3 billion to $6 billion.

Why more monster hurricanes are coming
Pete Davies (CNN) Scientists say changing weather cycles mean we will see a higher number of monster hurricanes in the next 10 to 40 years. Such storms could cause $50 billion in damage and hundreds of thousands of deaths in the next decade alone. Two factors are involved: warmer ocean temperatures and less wind shear to inhibit the storms. CNN's Colleen McEdwards spoke with journalist and author of "Inside the Hurricane" Pete Davies to learn a little more about the phenomenon. McEDWARDS: What is it about the warmer ocean temperatures that affect the cycle of hurricanes? DAVIES: It's very clear from the historical record now that we have a pattern of quiet and then busy periods, with intense hurricane activity in the North Atlantic. We appear from 1995 to have entered a new busy period. From 1970 to 1994, there was an average of 1.5 intense hurricanes per year. We are now looking at the more scarier and alarming prospect of three major hurricanes every year on average. And looking at the historical record, you can be pretty certain that mode in the Atlantic is going to go on for at least 20 and possibly 40 years, because that's what it has done in the past.
