General area information. Crag information. Photos. (hungary)
http://ludens.elte.hu/climb/climb.html
Aron Urbanics climbing Fenevad X INTRODUCTION 'Are there any crags in Hungary at all?' Maybe the answer is surprising, but YES, THERE ARE. If it's your dream to climb routes on snow-white rockfaces on the top of hills covered by beech forest and enjoy the magnificant view from the peak, then it's time to come to Hungary! Here you can find lots of routes from the easiest to the extremely difficult. Many need great strength, endurance and technique (and a good bit of resolve ). You may be dazzled by the great variety of forms and colours. (The latter refers to the leaves in autumn, because the rockfaces are usually white.) Lots of recently discovered areas provide exciting opportunities to open new routes. Friendly people, pretty girls.... What more do you need to persuade you? Pictures about hungarian crags ABOUT HUNGARY CLIMATE: The winter is cold, usually with a little snow. Except for a few sunny places and indoor walls , you can't climb. Spring is much more pleasant, you can begin climbing from March on. ( Bad luck if it's raining...) Summer is dry and hot, but don't worry, you can find some cool places. Autumn is like spring, it's warm and sunny until November. STONE TYPES: Most walls consist of wavey, holey Dachstein limestone. Sometimes limestone is mixed with dolomite, it's full of rims and edges. Some places you can find vulcanic rock (andesite). Sandstone is very rare.

Hungarian Studies at IU
Indiana University is home to one of the foremost academic programs in North America for advanced research on Hungary. The origins of Hungarian Studies at Indiana University can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II, when the university offered Hungarian language instruction. By the early 1960s, Indiana University expanded the scope of its Hungarian studies curriculum and provided qualified students with a foundation in the history, politics, language and culture of Hungary. With funding provided by the US Department of Education and the commitment of the university administration and several members of the faculty, Indiana University gradually attained a concentration of scholars, resources, and programs that has made and continues to make contributions to advanced teaching and research in Hungarian studies.
Below are some of the resources available at Indiana University.
  • IU boasts one of the nation's largest concentrations of faculty and students specializing in topics related to Hungary.

by Peter Unwin
The author was en poste at the British Embassy in Budapest in 1958-1961 and served as ambassador 1983-1986. He returned recently to revisit and recall the Hungary he then knew, with its memories of 1956: " I looked in western Hungary and, more particularly, in the quiet corner of Austria in which most of the refugees arrived. It is the Seewinkel, the flat stretch of fields and marshes that juts into Hungary on the eastern side of the Neusiedlersee, infinitely remote from Vienna only forty miles away. I went to Andau, where hundreds of refugees inched across a broken bridge across the canal that follows the border. It is a nondescript little town which has forgotten that once upon a time people wrote books about what happened there. But a back road which leads the six miles to the bridge has been christened "Freedom's Way". Artists from all over Europe have punctuated it at regular intervals with bits of modern sculpture made from trees and boulders and choses trouvées

Árpád Mikó
Through Our Looking Glass History-Image.
Selected Examples of the Interplay between Past and Art in Hungary.
Exhibition in the Hungarian National Gallery, March 17-September 24, 2000.
Exhibition arranged and catalogue edited by Árpád Mikó and Katalin Sinkó. As a national institution, the Hungarian National Gallery commemorated the millennial year with an exhibition suitable for the occasion. Its theme was the changing relationship between art and the past, specifically national history. Not an easy option was chosen (perhaps expected on such occasions), and no pleasant tour through scenes of Hungarian history, as if in a slide show, was on offer. Such presentations abound these days; we instead started out from the insight that each age created its own image of history, or more precisely, that each age reshaped its past according to its own image. History can be manipulated, and itself manipulates; the fine arts have always had an important role in this manipulation. We wanted to demonstrate the operation and effects of this mechanism. The exhibition was divided into sixteen large sections. These were essentially thematic groupings, but as certain themes were preferred in certain ages, the sections followed each other in a loose chronological order; ultimately, they did outline a thousand years of the Hungarian state. Since the primary approach was reflexive, these thousand years of history appear, as it were, in a mirror, often a distorting mirror, which demanded a great deal of mental cooperation from the public, something they may not be used to in Hungarian exhibition rooms. The exhibition, in other words, made for a difficult reading-if very attractive, presenting important works of art.
