During the "communist" regieme, there was no political activity against conscription. That time the defence of the homeland was a "saint duty for every citizen". The Hungarians:
A Thousand Years of Victory in Defeat
Paul Lendvai
Translated by Ann Major

Reviews Table of Contents The Hungarians is the most comprehensive, clear-sighted, and absorbing history ever of a legendarily proud and passionate but lonely people. Much of Europe once knew them as "child-devouring cannibals" and "bloodthirsty Huns." But it wasn't long before the Hungarians became steadfast defenders of the Christian West and fought heroic freedom struggles against the Tatars (1241), the Turks (16-18th centuries), and, among others, the Russians (1848-49 and 1956). Paul Lendvai tells the fascinating story of how the Hungarians, despite a string of catastrophes and their linguistic and cultural isolation, have survived as a nation-state for more than 1,000 years. He movingly describes the national trauma inflicted by the transfer of the historic Hungarian heartland of Transylvania to Romania under the terms of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920a trauma that the passing of years has by no means lessened. The horrors of Nazi and Soviet Communist domination were no less appalling, as Lendvai's restrained account makes clear, but are now part of history. An unforgettable blend of eminent readability, vibrant humor, and meticulous scholarship

The Reformation in Hungary

After the Battle of Mohacs in 1526 and the first siege of Vienna 1529, Hungary was partitioned in three parts : Ottoman Hungary (the central plain, with Buda, Pest and Szekesfehervar), Royal Hungary in the west (with core Croatia and much of Slovakia) and Transylvania in the east.
In the 1540es and 1550es the reformation made great progress in Hungary, to an extent that much of the country's clergy and populace professed protestantism; only remnants of the Catholic church remained, most of the ranks of the Hungarian Catholic church hierarchy were deserted.
Among the protestants, there were three interpretations competing - the Lutherans with strongholds in the German speaking communities of Royal Hungary and in German communities in Transylvania, the Calvinists dominating in the lands east of the Danube, and the ANTITRINITARIANS. The Calvinists turned out to be the strongest group, organized in dioceses under superintendents. GASPAR KAROLYI published the Hungarian bible translation in 1590. A feature characteristic to Hungarian Calvinism is that the church continued to be administrated by bishops (superintendents); councils of elders, according to the Genevan model, emerged only in the 17th century.

Budapest, Október 6. u. 11. Youth and the State in Hungary: Capitalism, Communism and Class
by László Kürti This work takes as its focus the nature of Hungary's youth movements since the 1930s. In a detailed ethnographic study, the text covers the lives of youth workers in the Csepel district of Budapest in the context of the political and economic transformations witnessed during the 20th century. The author follows State-Youth relations from the inter-war capitalism that made pheasants into workers, through the post war state socialism - "Stalinism" and after - to the reintroduction of capitalism in 1990. This substantial time frame allows an exploration of the transformations and dilemmas of youth, class, gender and ethnicity as they develop across time. In the course of this study two main themes emerge: the reproduction of class in youth culture across shifting socio-economic conditions; and the mobilization of youth movements in resistance to the state. Gödöllõ, Hungary, 1933 The 4th World Jamboree was hel at Gödöllö, Hungary in 1933. It was attended by over 26,000 Scouts representing 46 countries. Its setting was the great park at Gödöllö. It was notable for the excellent weather which was enjoyed and the assembled Scouts were thankful for the shade which the trees of the Royal Forest afforded. Scouts who attended this gathering remember particularly the sight of B.-P. making his rounds on the camp site on a magnificent brown charger. It was also most noticeable that the whole Hungarian nation had cooperated to make the event a success. 97. Photographs Documenting The Holocaust In Hungary
Selected photographs from the Jewish Museum and Archives in Budapest, Hungaryshow the human tragedy of the Nazi deportation of Hungarian Jews.

Photographs Documenting the Holocaust in Hungary
Introduction, by Harry W. Mazal OBE: Many people know - although many of them very much want to forget, and many more want to make others forget - that the Nazis and their European accomplices murdered six million Jews by employing various methods, such as hunger, beating, hanging, shooting, gassing, etc. during the Second World War. Nearly one tenth of the victims were Hungarian Jews, which means approximately 550,000 people. This estimate is based on a sound research of archival documents. The reasons why the Hungarian Parliament agreed to pass the severely unlawful First Jewish Law is a subject of a historical debate. According to the traditional opinion it was meant to be a token of "good" intentions towards Hitler’s Reich, the neighbor of which Hungary became after the Anschluss (the Nazi Third Reich annexed Austria in March 1938). It is also possible that the right-wing conservative politicians aimed to take the wind out of the sails of the extreme right. It may well be that the example of the fascist Italy also exercised a considerable influence, since Mussolini in the same year passed anti-Semitic laws and decrees, with which he surprised even the members of his own party. Three anti-Semitic laws completed the exclusion of the Hungarian Jews between 1938 and 1941. The first two laws made their economic situation more and more difficult; the Third Jewish Law, which was passed in 1941, however, was a real, Nuremberg-type, racial law introducing "race-protective" orders.

Budapest Hungary Sunday - July 11, 2004 The Tater Tots The Tater Tot team consists of Scott Badger, Cheri Clausen, and Megan Hansen (left to right). Here we are standing in front of a huge statue of St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary, almost 1000 years ago. Ralph told us to be careful because legend has it that the King's mighty mace will fall upon any virgin over fifteen that walks beneath him. (At least two of us are OK.
Dr. Laszlo Pordonay talked about Hungarian history and language.
Dr. Laszlo Pordonay presented a lecture on Hungarian history. He also taught us a few Hungarian words and explained that the Hungarian language is not related to any of the common Indo-European language families (Romance, Germanic, and Slavic). It derives from the Finno-Ugric language group, along with Finnish and Estonian and is said to be one of the world's most difficult languages to learn.
Many of us had been intrigued by the lecture we were given the day before and had further questions about the rerouting of the Danube River. Slovakia rerouted the Danube River near Bratislava by building a dam and canal on the newly routed section. This action is controversial because of its ecological, economic and cultural impact and also because it actually move that section of the Danube's flow entirely inside Slovakian borders.

The Square itself with the Museum of Fine Arts on one side and the Palace of Arts on the other is one of the most impressive open spaces in Budapest. In the center you can see a 36 meter high column with the Archangel Gabriel and equestrian statues of the 7 Magyar chiefs who actually conquered the territory (Arpad, Elod, Ond, Kond, Tas, Huba, Tohotom namely :). The stone block in front of the column is the Heroes Monument. The 2 part colonnade in the back shows in chronological order the rulers, kings and princes of Hungary. Behind the square you will find the City Park, with lots of recreation possibilities.
