Hungary - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Hungary is a country that hasn't enjoyed much independence. Throughout much of its history, Hungary has been under the rule of a foreign government. At times, foreign rule was good for Hungary, at other times, awful. And for as long as there was foreign rule in Hungary, there were Hungarians fighting against it.
The history of Hungary began almost 1,500 years ago, with a group of people called the Magyars. The Magyars were nomads who originally came from the land of nearby Russia. The Magyars settled in the land of Hungary in Eastern Europe around the 8th century AD. The Magyars were hunters and horsemen, and after settling around Hungary, became warriors. For more than a hundred years, the Magyars picked fights with people as far away as modern-day France. The Germans finally defeated the Magyars in 955, greatly reducing the Magyars' strength.
After this defeat, the Magyars looked to Rome to the Pope for strength. When they accepted Christianity as their religion, the pope crowned a Magyar as king of Hungary. According to Hungarian tradition, "Christian King" Stephen I was crowned on Christmas Day in the year 1000.

Map History of Hungary - Pre WWII English Deutsch T he Celts occupied Hungary in the 3 rd century BC but were conquered by the Romans around the beginning of the Christian era. Until the early 5 th century AD, all of Hungary west of the Danube (an area knows as Transdanubia) was included in then Roman province of Pannonia. The Roman legion stationed at Aquincum (Budapest) guarded the north-eastern frontier of the empire. The pleasure-loving Romans planted the first vineyards in Hungary and built baths near the region’s thermal waters. They were forced to abandon Pannonia in 451 by the Huns, whose short-lived empire was established by Attila. The Huns were followed by Goths, Lombards, and finally the Avars, a powerful Turkic people. They in turn were subdued by Charlemagne in 796. S even Magyar tribes under the leadership of Arpad – the gyula (chief military commander) – swept in from beyond the Volga River in 896 and occupied the Danube Basin. The Magyars terrorised Europe with raids as far as Spain, northern Germany and southern Italy until they were stopped by the German king, Otto I, at the battle of Augsburg in 955 and subsequently converted to Christianity. Hungary’s first king and patron saint, Stephen I (Istvan), was crowned on Christmas Day in the year 1000, marking the foundation of the Hungarian State. Medieval Hungary was a large and powerful state which included Transylvania (now in Romania), Slovakia and Croatia. The capital shifted from Szekesfehervar near Lake Balaton to Visegrad, Esztergom and Buda. The so – called Golden Bull, a kind of Magna Carta limiting some of the king’s powers in favour of the nobility, was signed at Szekesfehervar in 1222, and universities were founded in Pecs (1367) and Buda (1389).

Portraits and Self-Portraits T he Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was the second largest state in Europe. With an area of 676,615 square km in 1914 it was second only to Russia. Its population was the third largest after Russia's and Germany's. According to the last census in 1910, the empire embraced 51,390,223 people.
T he state was officially formed by the Compromise of 1867. It has been commonly referred to as the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy since 1868, when Francis Joseph, emperor of Austria and apostolic king of Hungary, ordered that his lands be so called in a royal manuscript.
Although this expressed precisely the constitutional structure of the Dualist Monarchy, it disregarded one of its most important attributes: that it was a multi-national state. In 1910, when people were classified by the language they used in everyday discourse, 25% of all citizens were of German, 17% of Hungarian, 13% of Czech, 3% of Slovene, 2% of Italian nationa-lity, and the rest belonged to various other national minorities. The Monarchy was a genuine product of Central Europe; a place where cultures, nations and nationalities coexisted.
H ungary was the bigger part of Francis Joseph's empire in regard to its area, and the smallest according to the number of its inhabitants. If we are to be precise, then we must include the Countries of the Hungarian Holy Crown, an area of 325,411 square km, with a population of 20.8 million (1910). Compared to Austria, there were almost 8 million less people here occupying a territory that was larger by 25,000 square km. The Countries of the Holy Crown covered the Hungarian Kingdom, the Croatian-Slavonian Kingdom, Fiume and the so-called Hungarian Seabord.

Hungary also throughout the centuries gave asylum to many nationalities: in the north, Ruthenians; in the east and Transylvania, Wallachians (Rumanians) and Saxons; in the south, Serbs. Eventually, Hungary would contain 14 distinct national minorities, each developing rich cultures and literary languages, ascending to nobility, and all contributing to the beauty and diversity of the Kingdom of Hungary. Popes throughout the centuries have called Hungary the " Savior of Europe ," and the "Savior of Christianity Hungarian contributions to society . Did you know that Hungarians declared religious freedom in Torda, Transylvania, in 1557? Two centuries earlier, Hungary declared that there was no such thing as a witch. in the aftermath of WWI, was extremely harsh on Hungary and unjustifiably one-sided. The resulting "treaty" lost Hungary an unprecedented 2/3 of her territory, and 1/2 of her total population or 1/3 of her Hungarian-speaking population. Add to this the loss of up to 90% of vast natural resources, industry, railways, and other infrastructure. This was done to a nation whose borders were established over a thousand years earlier (896 A.D.) and one who lost countless lives defending the rest of Europe from numerous invasions from the likes of the Mongolian Tatars and the Ottoman Turks. Hungary experienced phenomenal economic growth during the latter part of the 19th century and into the 20th. It's alignment with another economic powerhouse Germany, alarmed France and Russia. Each needed a way to stave off German-Hungarian economic competition. With the advent of WWI, France had her chance and began fostering anti-Hungarian sentiment among non-Magyar speaking Hungarian nationals. It is important to note that for over a thousand years, Hungary never experienced ethnic civil war. France, eager to weaken Hungary, offered to reward those nations and groups that assisted them in the war with large pieces of territory. The "Little Entente" of Rumania (who switched sides in the last minute), Czechoslovakia, and Serbia took that opportunity and got very lucky.

History of Hungary
Hungary, officially the Hungarian People's Republic, is a landlocked country in central Europe covering an area of 35,921 square miles. The capital of Hungary is Budapest. Hungary is bordered by the former Czechoslovakia to the north, Romania and the former Soviet Union to the east, Austria to the west, and Yugoslavia to the south. Once part of the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary is now one of the smallest countries in Eastern Europe. Endowed with good natural conditions for farming and a diversified industry, Hungary is one of the most prosperous countries in the former communist block. In the beginning, the western part of what is now known as Hungary, was located in the Roman Empire while the area of the Danube River was occupied by various Germanic and Asiatic tribes. Around the fifth century, a Nomadic people known as Magyars, ruled under Arpad, began moving west into what is now Hungary. In 892, the Holy Roman Emperor Arnulf invited these people to help him get rid of the Moravians. The Magyars agreed and began to settle on The Great Hungarian Plain. The Magyars ravaged all of central Europe until they were defeated by Otto I in 955. Twenty years later, Arpad's grandson Geza, accepted Christianity. Geza's son, Stephen, was crowned king in the year 1000 and continued Hungary's Christianization and development. A devastating invasion by the Mongols killed half the population in 1241. This ended the reign of the Arpad dynasty, and from that date until 1918, Hungary was ruled, with one exception, by foreign powers.
