History
THE HUNGARIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC emerged in 1949 after the Hungarian Workers' Party eliminated its rivals and assumed control of the state. Soviet control of Eastern Europe after World War II had enabled a minuscule communist party lacking popular support to gain power in the country and gradually eliminate its political rivals. Under Matyas Rakosi, the party consolidated its control and radically transformed the country economically, socially, and politically. In the mid-1950s, after the Soviet Union had somewhat relaxed its control of Eastern Europe, Hungarian society began to mobilize against the regime, culminating in the Revolution of 1956. Soviet troops crushed the rebellion, leaving power in the hands of Janos Kadar. After consolidating his authority, Kadar embarked on a program of economic reform in the mid-1960s. Despite internal divisions, strong foreign influence, and outright attempts to force the Hungarians to assimilate into other cultures, Hungarian nationalism has thrived throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nationalism drove Hungary to ally itself with Nazi Germany to regain territories lost after World War I. Nationalism also inspired Hungarians to revolt against the Stalinist political order in October 1956. Country Studies main page Hungary Country Studies main page Celebrity

History The History of Alcoa in Hungary
In January 1993 Alcoa acquired 50.1 percent of the Light Metal Works of Hungary (Sz©kesfeh©rv¡ri K¶nny»f©mm»), registereing the company as Alcoa-K¶f©m Kft. Alcoa acquired the remaining 49.9% of Alcoa-K¶f©m in 1996.
Alcoa came to Hungary at that time because it found the proper chemistry of technical capabilities, skilled work force and local culture. The Hungarian State Agency of Privatization accepted Alcoa's investment because of Alcoa's commitment to introduce state-of-the-art production technology and management to Alcoa-K¶f©m. In addition Alcoa also guaranteed the implementation of its environmental, safety and health policies, and the continuous training of the workforce.
Since 1993 Alcoa-K¶f©m's sales have grown from $170 million to $400 million. Productivity during this period has doubled. K¶f©m employs around 1800 workers. Alcoa-K¶f©m exports 80 per cent of its output, which represents about two-thirds of the total Hungarian light metal export. K¶f©m is one of the ten biggest Hungarian exporters that account for 25 per cent of the country’s total export. In 1992 Alcoa-K¶f©m acquired and has successfully retained ISO 9001 certification. In 1999 Alcoa-K¶f©m obtained EU environmental ISO 14001 certification.
Alcoa's initial investment in Hungary has since grown to encompass four separate operations including Alcoa-K¶f©m, Alcoa Closure Systems International (Sz©kesfeh©rv¡r), Alcoa-Fujikura (M³r) and Alcoa Wheel Products, Europe (Sz©kesfeh©rv¡r). The cumulative value of Alcoa’s Hungarian investments is $370 million, which ranks it as the 10th largest investor, and the 2rd largest American investor in Hungary. Alcoa is the 12th largest employer in Hungary with a total of 6,000 employees.

Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed in World War I. It fell under communist rule following World War II. A revolt in 1956 and an announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact was met with massive military intervention by Moscow.
In the more open GORBACHEV years, Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and steadily shifted toward multiparty democracy and a market-oriented economy. Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Hungary developed close political and economic ties to Western Europe. It joined NATO in 1999 and is a frontrunner in a future expansion of the EU. Important dates of Hungarian history
5th century
The Hungarian tribes left the area of the Urals. They passed along the Volga and the Caspian Sea. After several hundred years of wandering, they reached the Carpathian Basin.
Stephen was converted to Christianity. After his death, he was canonized.
An abbey was set up at Tihany. The foundation charter was drawn up on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. This is the earliest written record extant in the Hungarian language.
The Mongolian Tatars devastated the country. Their presence, which lasted a year, halted development for at least a century. After the warfare with the Hungarians, the Tatars did not continue towards the west.
The Turks occupied Buda. Hungary was split into three parts. The Habsburg governed the western part of the country, the central area was ruled by the Turks, and the south-east Transylvanian principality (today part of Roumania) for a long time was the citadel of Hungarian culture.
Buda was recaptured from the Turks. (The Turks - similarly to the Tartars - could only advance in Europe to the territory of Hungary. Here they were faced by obstacles, after which no strength was left for the siege of Vienna.)
First half of the 19th century
A national reform movement was launched for the political and economic transformation of the country, for Hungarian language and culture. This was when the

Do extra-terrestrial beings exist? - the Nobel Prize winning Italian physicist, Enrico Fermi, was once asked by his disciples in California. Of course, Fermi answered - they are already here among us, they are called Hungarians...
You are welcome here, in the homeland of the extra-terrestrial beings. Why did Fermi think this about us? Because Hollywood's dream factories were partly built by Hungarian producers, directors, writers and cameramen? Or because - as the saying goes - Hungarians were created by God to sit on horseback? Perhaps because Bela Bartok's music in his own time was considered extra-terrestrial by many? Or because of the Hungarian language, which does not resemble any world language and sounds so strange? So, who are these Hungarians? It is not (yet) known quite precisely. It seems certain they arrived somewhere from Asia. Their nearest kinship is with distant "small" peoples. With regard to Hungary's location, world languages generally define it as: Eastern Europe. In fact, our country is situated in the centre of the continent, in

Brief History of Hungary
By way of introduction
To encapsulate the history of eleven-hundred years in some 100 Kbytes of text the author had to be selective - much detail of interest had to be ommitted in order to present the broad outline. Selection, as well as the linking and glossing of the selected facts, inevitably shows up as an editorial view , which might have been subtly different had this text been prepared by someone else but few would question, it is to be hoped, the overall factual accuracy of the narrative. A comment on presentation reading about history in reverse sequence might be more satisfactory than the orthodox approach beloved of schoolmasters, namely starting with the distant past and moving forward through time, which risks boring the reader with details whose subsequent import and consequences only become clear later on. To avoid this risk, the account that follows (the initial Overview and the Checklist of dates apart) has been arranged to start at the present with which the reader is assumed to be at least vaguely familiar and then work its way back to successively earlier antecedents of conditions and events.

http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/spalffy/h_hist_0.htm
An overview of Hungary's history
To the east of the Alps a crescent of snow-capped mountains, the Carpathians, encloses an alluvial plain some tens of thousands of years ago it had been a huge inland lake interspersed with rolling hill country, protecting it from the open spaces to its north, east and south-east. In the south it terminates at the river Sava, beyond which the mountain ranges of the Balkan Peninsula rise, in the west at the foothills of the Styrian Alps. The Danube, foremost of Europe's rivers, enters it by the gap between the Carpathians' westernmost tip and the Styrian Alps; having collected the waters of all rivers that rise within or enter the basin, it breaks through the opposite end of the Carpathians at the Iron Gates. In the closing years of the 9th century a confederation of seven nomadic tribes, numbering perhaps a few hundred thousand people in all, crossed into this Carpathian Basin from the east, impelled to do so, if indirectly, by Byzantine foreign policy. Finding it well-suited to their pastoral-agricultural lifestyle, and sparsely populated, they rapidly occupied all of it, to settle there for good. The history of Hungary is the history of these people in this place from that time: their arrival there marks a break in the continuity, and a new beginning, in the history of the Carpathian Basin, as it does of theirs. Nothing that happened to them before carries over into what happened to them thereafter; nothing that happened in the place before Romans, Huns and a succession of other migrant peoples affected what happened thereafter.

Introduction

With the disappearance of Communist Regimes all over Eastern Europe now is a good time to engage in family history research in countries like Hungary. I have to declare an interest, my mother being Hungarian born.
However, going unprepared would be a waste of time - apart from the language difficulties - Hungary has been devastated too many times in wars. Churches and Castles have been burnt, records lost and some territory (2/3rds) has been given to other countries since the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 (mainly Romania - who were given Transylvania, but also Czechoslovakia, Austria and Yugoslavia benefited). Then there are the religious denominations to take into account. But do not be put off by this description, as once you have a grasp of how things work it is possible to achieve much, of course if you have Hungarian ancestors and have retained some of the language and family legends, it helps. Having some Latin would also be useful, especially with Roman Catholic records.
