St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Also called St. Elizabeth of Thuringia , born in Hungary , probably at Pressburg, 1207; died at Marburg, Hesse, 17 November ( not 19 November), 1231. She was a daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary (1205-35) and his wife Gertrude, a member of the family of the Counts of Andechs-Meran; Elizabeth's brother succeeded his father on the throne of Hungary as Bela IV; the sister of her mother, Gertrude, was St. Hedwig , wife of Duke Heinrich I, the Bearded, of Silesia, while another saint, St. Elizabeth (Isabel) of Portugal (d. 1336), the wife of the tyrannical King Diniz of that country, was her great-niece. In 1211 a formal embassy was sent by Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia to Hungary to arrange, as was customary in that age, a marriage between his eldest son Hermann and Elizabeth, who was then four years old. This plan of a marriage was the result of political considerations and was intended to be the ratification of a great alliance which in the political schemes of the time it was sought to form against the German Emperor Otto IV , a member of the house of Guelph, who had quarrelled with the Church. Not long after this the little girl was taken to the

Budapest, Október 6. u. 11. The Hungarians: 1000 Years of Victory and Defeat
by Paul Lendvai "This brief narrative of Hungarian history, elegantly translated into English, is written with verve, profound insights, and just the right degree of cynicism . It well explains the dilemma of a respectable old state squeezed between more powerful neighbours, the contradiction between individual genius and repeated national failure, and the recurring tragic conflict between the defense of nationhood and messianic nationalis." István Deák (Columbia University)
Lendvai, who fled Hungary in 1957, traces Hungarian politics, culture, economics, and emotions from the Magyars' dramatic entry into the Carpathian Basin in 896 to the brink of the post-Cold War era. Hungarians are ever pondering what being Hungarian means and where they came from. Yet, argues Lendvai, Hungarian national identity is not only about ancestry or language but also an emotional sense of belonging. Hungary's famous poet-patriot, Sándor Petôfi, was of Slovak descent, and Franz Liszt felt deeply Hungarian though he spoke only a few words of Hungarian. Through colorful anecdotes of heroes and traitors, victors and victims, geniuses and imposters, based in part on original archival research, Lendvai conveys the multifaceted interplay, on the grand stage of Hungarian history, of progressivism and economic modernization versus intolerance and narrow-minded nationalism.

About Budapest:
The city is divided into two parts, the hilly side of Buda on the western bank and the flat plain of Pest on the eastern bank of the river Danube. These two parts of the city were once separate towns and were merged together with Ancient Buda (Óbuda) only in 1873.
The Pest side of the capital:
The city centre starts on Vörösmarty Square . Váci Street, the pedestrian main street of downtown Budapest, sets out from here and the square holds the two most popular cafés of the capital: old Gerbeaud and trendy Art Café. The square is always busy and full of life. Anyone in town will surely drop by, and if the weather is fine take a coffee on a terrace or rest on a bench, and when the weather turns cold sit behind a café window. The Váci utca the first street in Budapest to be pedestrianized, but it was one of the best places for shopping long before this change. The street was formed in the 18th century but most houses date back to the 19th and early 20th century. It quickly became the shopping centre and later the esplanade of the Pest side. As the mid-day or evening promenade in Váci Street slowly became a fashionable leisure activity for the "well-to-do" in the last century, shops grew more and more expensive and later only the most exclusive merchants could afford to open an outlet on the street. The street has been marked by a certain exclusivity ever since.

Short life story, suitable for children.

AUGUST 16 ST. STEPHEN OF HUNGARY
St. Stephen was born around 969 in Hungary. This saint's name had been Vaik. When he became a Christian at the age of ten, he was given the name of Stephen. At the same time, his father, the duke of Hungary, and many nobles also became Christians. However, when Stephen himself became king, the country was still quite pagan. Some people were violent and fierce. So he decided to establish the Church solidly in Hungary. His efforts were blessed by God. The secret of St. Stephen's amazing success in leading his people to the Christian faith was his devotion to Mary. He placed his whole kingdom under her protection and built a magnificent church in her honor. Pope Sylvester II sent a beautiful king's crown to Stephen. This treasure became known as the crown of St. Stephen. During the Second World War, American soldiers captured the crown. However, it was returned to Hungary in 1978. Stephen was a strong, fearless ruler. He enforced just laws. But he was also gentle and kind to the poor. He tried to avoid war as much as he could. He loved to give gifts of money to beggars without letting them know who he was. Once he was giving these gifts in disguise when a crowd of rough beggars knocked him down and struck him. They pulled his hair and beard, and stole his money pouch. They never could have imagined they were bullying their king. And they never found out from him. He took the insult quietly and humbly. He forced his thoughts to turn to Mary and prayed: "See, Queen of heaven, how your people have treated him whom you made king. If they were enemies of the faith, I would know what to do with them. But since they are your Son's subjects, I will take this joyfully. I say thank you for it." In fact, King Stephen made a promise then and there to give more than ever to beggars.

Home Christianity > Stephen I, the First Christian Hungarian King
Stephen I, the First Christian Hungarian King Reigned 997–1038 Foundation of the Hungarian Kingdom and Organization of the Hungarian Christian Church King Stephen I (also known as King Saint Stephen ) is one of the most important personalities of Hungarian history. He was the first Christian Hungarian king, the founder of the Hungarian Kingdom and the organizer of the Hungarian Christian Church. Stephen was born around 970 to Duke Géza and Sarolt, the Christian daughter of the Transylvanian leader Gyula. He received the pagan name Vajk at birth, but he was given the name of the first Christian martyr, Stephen , at his baptism in 972. Stephen married the deeply religious Gisella, the daughter of Prince Henry of Bavaria, in AD 996. From Bavaria came many missionaries, nobles and knights who settled in Hungary and helped Stephen in converting the country to Christianity. After the death of Duke Géza in AD 997, Stephen was elected Prince of Hungary. At the very beginning of his reign, a pagan revolt led by his relative Koppány broke out. Koppány planned to kill Stephen, succeed him on the throne and marry the widowed Sarolt. According to chronicles, the young Stephen girded himself with a sword for the first time. He gathered his army, asked for God's help, then defeated the enemy near Veszprém. Vencellin, the German captain of the army, killed Koppány in the battle. Not only the Hungarian throne was at stake in the battle between Stephen and Koppány, but the nation's religious future as well: paganism or Christianity. With God's help, Stephen triumphed in the battle and Christianity won. The Hungarians defended Europe against the pagan invasions in the centuries to follow. Thus, the formerly pagan Hungarian nation became the bulwark of the Christian Europe.

Hungary vote too close to call
Prime Minister Orban, right, and opposition leader Medgyessy, left, are fighting similar campaigns BUDAPEST, Hungary As the first round of voting in Hungary's parliamentary elections drew to a close Sunday evening, the Hungarian Socialist Party, the country's leading opposition party, held a slight lead with more than 42 percent of the vote. Eighty percent of the votes had been tallied. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's conservative Fidesz alliance was running neck-and-neck with the Socialists, election officials said, with more than 41 percent of the vote. In third place, garnering more than 6 percent of the vote, was the Hungarian Free Democrats' Alliance a former coalition partner to the Socialists in the government, which ruled from 1994-98. The liberal Democrats' Alliance was poised to gain entry into the new parliament since only 5 percent of the vote is needed to secure representation. None of the other six parties running appeared to secure enough votes to reach that 5 percent threshold, election officials said.

Saints Titus
(Memorial)
January 26
(also known as Aubrey) Saint Robert , introduced the Rule of Saint Benedict and Alberic served as prior. The monastery flourished, but new monks were quick to modify the strict rule; Robert left in despair to live as a hermit elsewhere and Alberic was imprisoned. In 1093, he left too with the Englishman Saint Stephen Harding to live as hermits, but the bishop of Langres commanded them to return to their monastery. Alberic returned and was unsuccessful in reforming the monastery. Cistertium Robert returned to Molesmes in 1100 and Alberic was elected abbot. He restored the primitive Benedictine rule and added new austerities to it, thus putting his stamp on the Cistercian observance, though his successor, Stephen Harding, was mainly responsible for the characteristics associated with the order: the extended use of lay brothers, and the almost puritan attitude toward the Benedictine rule and to customary monastic tradition as well as to Romanesque artforms. Nevertheless, during the years of his abbacy the foundations were laid of what was quickly to grow from a single obscure house into an influential religious order, which still exists. The old Cistercian martyrology adds: "He had a filial devotion to our Lady, from whom he received the white cowl." It could also be that the white habit was adopted as an economy because unbleached wool was less expensive than dyed wool. Alberic set the example of humble poverty and hard work in God's service; when he died his successor Stephen told the community, "You have lost a revered father and spiritual guide; I have lost, not only a father and guide, but a friend and fellow soldier of the Lord . . . who carried us all in his heart with affectionate love" (Attwater, Attwater2, Benedictines, Coulson, Delaney, Encyclopedia, Farmer).
