Hungary's first 1000 years
Y ellow trams rattling down grand boulevards, faded neo-Baroque interiors, facades marked with signs of revolution, streets of cobblestone, grand turn of the century apartment blocks. Like the bathers lingering in the steam of Budapest's famous baths, this is a country infused with memories and history.
H ungary celebrated the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian State at the end of the last century. During the tumultuous thousand year history of Hungary and the Central European Region, rulers came and went and empires rose and fell, but Hungary's distinctive charms have never waned nor its welcome ever been less than genuine.
T he foundation was laid in the ninth century by the great Magyar chief, Árpád, who after having settled in the carpathian basin lead the people from paganism toward Christianity. On Christmas Day, 1000, Árpád's great grandson, Stephen ascended to the throne with a crown sent from Rome by Pope Sylvester II. The kingdom and nation of Hungary was born.
T he three hundred year reign of the House of Árpád saw the country become increasingly westward-looking and the succeeding House of Anjou brought expansion - into Poland, towards Dalmatia - and a great flowering of art and architecture. The first Golden Age had begun. Under King Matthias, lauded for his fairness and justice, Hungary flourished, but his passing eventually led to decimation under the Ottomans for 150 years during the 16th and l7th-century. However, the Habsburgs helped oust the Turkish, heralding a more stable time of reconstruction.

As a young Scoutmaster (25 at the time) he started organizing troops in Germany with several Scout friends (we refer to them collectively as the Countryless Eagles). He is still active as our General Secretary. His tireless work built the organization into what it is today. We who now are responsible for carrying forward this work owe him an eternal debt of gratitude for his work and sacrifice. Typically, we have a Boy Scout and Girl Guide troop in most cities that have substantial Hungarian populations. We are either closely affiliated or actually operate most Hungarian weekend schools around the world. We held celebrations of our 50th anniversary and had Jamborees in the USA (Fillmore, NY), Europe (Germany), and Australia (near Melbourne). Our South American troops will hold their Jamboree late in 1996. We base on our work on carrying out our obligations at four levels (God, our adopted countries, our fellowman and the Hungarian nation).

A second right-wing party, the Alliance of Young Democrats (Fiatal Demokratak Sz`vetsege, FIDESz), eclipsed the Democratic Forum during the mid-1990s, and Hungarian politics now follow the customary European model of alternating between FIDESz and the MSzP. Following the most recent poll in May 2002, the Socialists replaced the FIDESz-led coalition as the governing party.

Legislative power is held by the 386-seat national assembly, the Orszaggyhles , which is elected for 4 years (176 members come from single seat constituencies, 152 by proportional representation in multi-seat constituencies, and 58 members by proportional representation on a national basis). The Council of Ministers, the highest executive organ, is elected by the assembly on the advice of the president, who is also elected by the national assembly for a 4-year term, and may serve two terms. In April 1995, a 53-member National Autonomous Authority of the Romany Minority was ratified, with the power to administer funds disbursed by the central Government.

[edit this] [Upload image] THE HUNGARIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC emerged in 1949 after the Hungarian Workers' Party eliminated its rivals and assumed control of the state. Soviet control of Eastern Europe after World War II had enabled a minuscule communist party lacking popular support to gain power in the country and gradually eliminate its political rivals. Under Matyas Rakosi the party consolidated its control and radically transformed the country economically socially and politically. In the mid-1950s after the Soviet Union had somewhat relaxed its control of Eastern Europe Hungarian society began to mobilize against the regime culminating in the Revolution of 1956. Soviet troops crushed the rebellion leaving power in the hands of Janos Kadar. After consolidating his authority Kadar embarked on a program of economic reform in the mid-1960s. Like other countries of Eastern Europe Hungary has a history of class religious and ethnic conflicts that were intensified and sometimes decided by the actions of larger more powerful neighbors. Beginning in the tenth century German and Bohemian missionaries converted the Magyars. In the early eleventh century Bavarian knights helped Stephen I eliminate rivals and quash peasant revolts. Suleyman the Magnificent's Ottoman armies conquered and partitioned the country with the Habsburgs in the sixteenth century expediting the spread of Protestant faiths. Habsburg rulers colonized Hungary with non-Magyars repressed its Protestants stifled its economic development and attempted to Germanize its people. The Entente powers carved up Hungary after World War I and distributed most of the land to new nation-states. Finally dictator Joseph Stalin enforced Soviet domination over postwar Hungary.

H U N G A R Y is a landlocked country in central Europe. It borders Austria and Slovenia in the west, Slovakia in the north, Ukraine in the northeast, Romania in the east, and Croatia and Yugoslavia (Vojvodina) in the south. Although mineral-poor, since World War II, Hungary has been transformed into an industrialized state. Until 1918 it was part of Austria-Hungary and was three-and-one-half times its present size, including sections of present-day Romania, Croatia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Hungary was a one-party Communist state ((((forced to be by the bloody russian red army)))) from 1948 to 1989, when it adopted a multiparty, democratic form of government.
    LAND AND RESOURCES
Topographically, Hungary is divided into three regions: Transdanubia (Dunantul) in the west, consisting mostly of low, undulating mountains and lowlands that include the Little Plain (Kis Alfold); the North-Central Mountain region (Eszaki Kozephegyseg) adjacent to the Slovak highlands; and the Great Plain (Nagy Alfold), which lies east of the

    GEOGRAPHY AND MATERIAL CONDITIONS
The Kingdom of Hungary, or "Realm of the Crown of St. Stephen", situated between 14º 25' and 26º 25' E. longitude, and between 44º 10' and 49º 35' N. latitude, includes, besides Hungary Proper and Transylvania, the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia and a territory known as the Military Frontier. The total area is 125,430 square miles, of which 16,423 belong to the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. Of a population of 19,254,559 (census of 1900) 51.5 per cent were Catholics. The population of the capital, Budapest, situated on both sides of the Danube, is about 800,000.
    HISTORY
Even in the earliest ages the territory of the present Kingdom of Hungary was the abode of various races of men. The remains from prehistoric times show that the country was inhabited when the present Hungarian lowlands were covered by the ocean. Half a century before Christ the Thracians occupied Hungary east of the Danube, while Hungary west of the Danube was the home of Celtic and Illyrian tribes. At the opening of the Christian Era the sway of the Romans extended as far as the Danube; Pannonia formed part of the Roman Empire for 400 years, and Dacia for about 150 years. After Rome fell, Hungary, like the other provinces, was affected by the migrations. First came the Huns who built up under King Attila , called "the Scourge of God ", the powerful Hunnish Empire. After the empire of the Huns went to pieces German tribes ruled in Hungary for about 100 years, and they were followed by the Avars. During the supremacy of the Avars, a period of over two hundred years, began the migration of the Slavonic tribes. Moravians, Bulgars, Croato-Serbians, and Poles all sought to overthrow the Avars, but their power was not broken until
