      Government
After many years as a one-party Marxist state, Hungary became a multiparty parliamentary democracy in 1989. It operates under the constitution of 1949 as amended in 1972, 1989, and 1997. The unicameral legislature consists of the 386-seat national assembly, whose members are directly elected to four-year terms. The executive branch consists of a president, who is the chief of state and, along with the presidential council, is elected by the national assembly, and a prime minister, who is the head of government. The leading political parties are the Socialist party, the Hungarian Civic party, the Independent Smallholder's party, the Alliance of Free Democrats, and the Hungarian Democratic Forum. For administrative purposes, the country is divided into 19 counties, 20 urban counties, and the capital city. Sections in this article: The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

Hungary: government cracks down on foreign land deals
Document Actions By Tony Wesolowsky Since the fall of communism, the people of Central and Eastern Europe have been wary of the prospect of foreigners coming in and buying up relatively inexpensive land. RFE/RL correspondent Tony Wesolowsky reports that for some people in Hungary, that worry has now become a reality.

Hungary Government Sets 2010 as Euro Zone Entry Date
Hungary set the target to introduce the euro on Jan. 1, 2010 as the government opted for a safe rather than a rapid introduction, Finance Minister Tibor Draskovics announced.
By 2008, Hungary will meet all the conditions necessary for the changeover of the forint to the euro in 2010, he said.
Hungary’s government debt is targeted to drop to 54.8% of the GDP, the central budget deficit will drop to 2.7% and annual inflation will decrease to 3% in 2008.
Under the economic program approved for period of 2005-2008, Hungary’s per capita GDP is planned to reach 60% of the per capital GDP of the former 15 EU members by the year 2008 in terms of purchasing power. BBJ 14.v.04)

    Hungary Government Crisis follows Reshuffle
The Free Democrats withdrew confidence in Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy after he fired the economy minister, István Csillag, even though the smaller coalition party opposed the dismissal.
Coalition talks will start tomorrow, threatening a collapse of the two year-old government. The Free Democrats won't nominate a successor, party Chairman Gábor Kuncze said.
In yesterday’s reshuffle, Medgyessy dismissed his economy, labor and sports ministers and created the post of development minister as part of efforts to bolster voter support for his Socialist-led cabinet.
Imre Szekeres will replace Sándor Burány as labor minister, while János Veres, one of Finance Minister Tibor Draskovic’s two deputies, was named development minister. BBJ 19.viii.04)

While the reshuffle does not affect the structure and the policies of the government, nor key ministries are involved (changes at the sports, labour and economic affairs ministries) it provoked a serious tension between the government coalition parties , as the junior liberal coalition party (Alliance of Free Democrats) disagrees with the PM decision to sack the minister of economic affairs, István Csillag (delegated by the liberals). While there were several rounds of negotiations ahead of the reshuffle between the PM and the coalition parties, apparently the decision was made without the consent of the junior coalition partner , moreover the liberals claimed that they may consider to reevaluate their future role in the government, threatening with a possible break up .
