of Hungary
Background:
Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro-Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country fell under communist rule following World War II. In 1956, a revolt and announced withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact were met with a massive military intervention by Moscow. In the more open GORBACHEV years, Hungary led the movement to dissolve the Warsaw Pact and steadily shifted toward multiparty democracy and a market-oriented economy. Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Hungary developed close political and economic ties to Western Europe. It joined NATO in 1999 and is a frontrunner in a future expansion of the EU.

Do extra-terrestrial beings exist? - the Nobel Prize winning Italian physicist, Enrico Fermi, was once asked by his disciples in California. Of course, Fermi answered - they are already here among us, they are called Hungarians...
You are welcome here, in the homeland of the extra-terrestrial beings. Why did Fermi think this about us? Because Hollywood's dream factories were partly built by Hungarian producers, directors, writers and cameramen? Or because - as the saying goes - Hungarians were created by God to sit on horseback? Perhaps because Bela Bartok's music in his own time was considered extra-terrestrial by many? Or because of the Hungarian language, which does not resemble any world language and sounds so strange? So, who are these Hungarians? It is not (yet) known quite precisely. It seems certain they arrived somewhere from Asia. Their nearest kinship is with distant "small" peoples. With regard to Hungary's location, world languages generally define it as: Eastern Europe. In fact, our country is situated in the centre of the continent, in

Hungary - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Hungary is a beautiful country in Eastern Europe. It's not a very big country, but there's a lot to see and do in Hungary. There are many old buildings there. There are many colorful houses. Budapest is Hungary's capital. It is famous for the number of pools and baths there.
Many countries surround Hungary. To the north are Slovakia and Ukraine, to the east is Romania. To the south are Serbia and Croatia, to the east is Austria. Because of its location, Hungary has had an interesting history. For hundreds of years, many people from east and west have fought over Hungary. Many different people have lived in that country. Each group of people brought something new to Hungary.
Budapest is in the north-central part of Hungary. The beautiful Danube River cuts the city in half. In fact, Budapest used to be two different cities. Many years ago, the city of Buda was on one side of the river and Pest was on the other. Then, in 1836, a Hungarian ruler built a bridge between Buda and Pest. Ever since, it's been one city of Budapest.

H ungary (lightly larger than Portugal) occupies the Carpathian Basin in the very centre of Eastern Europe. The 417-km long Hungarian 'portion' of the Danube River cuts though a southern extension of the Carpathian Mountains at the majestic Danube Bend north of Budapest. The Danube divides Hungary’s 93.030 sq. km into the Great Plain (Nagyalfold) on the east and Transdanubia (Dunantul) on the west. The 598-km-long Tisza River crosses the Great Pain about 100 km east of the Danube. Hungary’s ‘mountains’ are actually hills that seldom exceed an elevation of 1000 metres (mountains in Slovakia, Romania and Slovenia reach over 2000 metres). The highest peak is Kekes (1014 metres) in the Matra range north-east of Budapest.

Hungary - Geography
Hungary THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY lies in the central Danube Basin. With 92,103 square kilometers of territory, it is the sixteenth largest European country. The country's terrain consists largely of plains and hill country and is divided into three major geographic areas: the Great Plain, covering the central part of the country, the Transdanube in the west, and the Northern Hills along the northern border. The climate is mild and continental, although great contrasts in temperatures can occur. Hungary is roughly the size of the state of Indiana. It measures about 250 kilometers from north to south and 524 kilometers from east to west. It has some 2,258 kilometers of boundaries, shared with Austria to the west, Yugoslavia to the south and southwest, Romania to the southeast, the Soviet Union to the northeast, and Czechoslovakia to the north. Hungary's modern borders were first established after World War I when, by the terms of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, it lost more than two-thirds of what had formerly been the Kingdom of Hungary and 58.5 percent of its population. With the aid of Nazi Germany, the country secured some boundary revisions at the expense of parts of Slovakia in 1938 and Carpatho-Ukraine in 1939 and at the expense of Romania in 1940. However, Hungary lost these territories again with its defeat in World War II. After World War II, the Trianon boundaries were restored with a small revision that benefited Czechoslovakia.
