The 1936 Olympic Games in Germany
by Arvo Vercamer and Jason Pipes
The saga of the 1936 Olympic games began on 26 May 1930. This was when the German Olympic Committee met with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Berlin to petition for the hosting rights to XI Olympic games; other applicant cities were Barcelona, Istanbul, Frankfurt am Main, and Nürnberg. Of note is that Berlin was supposed to host the games in 1916, but these were cancelled due to WWI.
The German Olympic Committee organizers and planners did their homework well. When it was their turn to address the IOC, the Germans made an excellent case for showing that Berlin was in the heart of Europe - the city was accessible to everyone by air, by land and even by sea (via a number of German and other European port cities). To further increase their chances of being awarded the games, the German Olympic Committee showed the IOC preliminary development and construction plans as to how Berlin intended to host the games and how Germany would have regulation sports facilities available for all competitions.
On 25 April 1931, almost a year later, the IOC met in Barcelona, Spain, to render its decision. German Olympic committee members were there too. To further increase their chances, the German delegates in Barcelona made a few last minute pitches as well; one of them being that Germany would like another chance to host the games because the 1916 games in Berlin were cancelled.

Description of Class
"Jewels of Endurance" has been created to meet the diverse educational needs of a sixth grade class within an urban, fifth through eighth grade inner-city school with a population of about 600 students. Nearly 98 percent of the student population is African-American, with the remaining two percent consisting of students from a variety of backgrounds, including Vietnamese, Caucasian, Hispanic, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Native American, and Mexican. Classrooms are heterogeneously inclusive, containing students with special needs and learning disabilities that require adaptations to the curriculum. Students have a variety of learning levels and socio-economic demands within their lives which affect the way they view the importance of education. The response to literature component of the unit, featuring the historical novel Dear America Early Sunday Morning The Pearl Harbor Diary of Amber Billows Hawaii , by Barry Denenberg, is designed to operate with three to four heterogeneously grouped literature and reading circles, so students of all learning levels and abilities experience the benefits of working together (and thus fulfilling state and local curriculum standards and goals). By heterogeneously grouping the literature and reading circles, students are able to read silently or aloud to one another to complete the novel. Teachers may take the approach of assigning the reading of 10 pages per day over 12 days, in class or among the groups, or they may elect to assign the reading as homework.

If you build them, they will come! Not true for many library communities. Unlike the baseball film "Field of Dreams" where fans and baseball players blindly find their way to the baseball field, libraries need to get the word out! The New York Public Library's Office of Community Outreach Services (CDS) did just that over the last year, working in the communities of The New York Public Library's 85 Branches. Library outreach work is the responsibility of every staff member in The Branch Libraries. Over this past year, 22 professional staff members, of all ages and specialties, participated in the outreach services seminar and received training in the delivery of outreach services. Many of the seminar participants, as part of their seminar assignments, conducted staff meetings at their respective Branches to sensitize the local Branch staff on how to better serve persons with disabilities. Some of the seminar participants opted to convey the sensitivity issues by showing a short video: The Ten Commandments: Serving Persons with Disabilities . One of the seminar participants reached out to incarcerated mothers at the Rikers Island Maternity Unit and established a monthly Baby and Me lapsit program. Others reached out to nursing home residents with reading aloud programs, while others reached out to diverse ethnic populations in their Branch service areas.

wrote (June 12, 2004):
A well known musician stated the following:
Of course we know that, for all the use of historical instruments and boys' choirs, we cannot simply transplant an 18th century performance to the present day. (...) Too much has happened since then in the history of music. Both the musicians and the listeners of the present time, who grew up musically with Beethoven, Brahms and Stravinsky, perform and listen to a work by Bach with completely different ears to the musicians and listeners of Bach's time, who were only familiar with Buxtehude, Kuhnau and Reinken."]
Anyone disagree?.
Donald Satz wrote (June 12, 2004):
[To Charles Francis] No disagreement, but all that matters to me is musical enjoyment, and I much prefer baroque music played in the HIP style with period instruments.
Johan van Veen wrote (June 12, 2004):
There is nothing new in this statement. And as far as I know nobody – at least no interpreter - does intend to transplant a 18th-century performance into our time. But an attempt to come as close as possible to the performance practice of the composer and his time is no transplantation, because that is impossible.
But I get sick and tired of the argument used in statements like this that listeners of our time have grown up with Beethoven, Brahms and Stravinsky and therefore their perception must be different. How do other people know which composers I have grown up with? I only started to listen to Beethoven when his music was played on period instruments. And I can only appreciate

1. General Report All in all, the three subgroups worked well side by side and benefited from discussions with the members of other subgroups, proving that more than one subject can be in focus during an academic year. The natural scientists once again delivered what they had promised. 2. Personal Report 1996Ð97 Besides being the convenor of the natural sciences focus group this year, I have dealt with a number of issues concerning evolutionary and ecological problems, and also with some problems of life in the Universe. Other works have dealt with problems of early evolution. A renewed account of the first major evolutionary transitions (from the origin of replicators to the origin of protocells and chromosomes) was accepted (4), and a News and Views account of a Gothenburg meeting with a similar topic was published (3). We have analysed an intriguing problem of surface-bound primordial evolution: the dynamics of templates catalysing metabolic reactions on a surface. The applied two-dimensional model is a novel combination of cellular automata (for the macromolecules) and reaction-diffusion algorithms (for the metabolic intermediates); simulations are still in progress (7). Problems and selection consequences of parabolically replicating systems have been re-analysed. We managed to derive a Lyapunov function for parabolic competition (thus proving global asymptotic stability of coexistence, Ref. 5) and we plan to summarise all the major conceptual findings arrived at so far (9).

Program 2003
Petroleum system evaluation: fluid composition prediction 12 - 16 May Prof. dr. B. Horsfield and Dr. R. Di Primio 16 - 19 September Prof. dr. B. Horsfield and Dr. R. Di Primio
Overview:
Petroleum consists of an exceedingly complex mixture of hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons, extending from methane to macromolecular aggregates. The relative proportions of these components are quite variable and depend initially on the nature of the kerogen in the parent source rock and its level of maturity at the time of expulsion, and subsequently upon the pressure and temperature conditions of the source-carrier-reservoir system during expulsion, migration and accumulation. This course demonstrates how petroleum compositions may be predicted and the results applied in basin modelling (e.g. phase or GOR prediction), and aims at providing an introduction to petroleum system modelling using a combined theoretical and hands-on approach. Participating students will learn:
  • Pyrolysis techniques in petroleum exploration Kerogen typing Use of bulk and compositional kinetic models for hydrocarbon generation and cracking Principles of 1-D, 2-D and 3-D modelling, including establishing a conceptual model, calibration using organic and inorganic parameters, calculating subsurface temperatures using heat flow and conductivities, and reconstructing thermal and erosional history.

To get the most benefit out of this section, put your anxieties aside. Don’t think about what the admissions committee wants, don’t worry about grammar or style, and especially don’t worry about what anyone would think. Worries like these hamper spontaneity and creativity. Focus instead on writing quickly and recording every thought you have the instant you have it. You will know that you are performing these exercises correctly if you are relaxing and having fun. Stream of Consciousness Take 20 minutes to answer each of the questions: Who are you? and What do you want? Start with whatever comes to mind first, and write without pausing for the entire time.
