Love, longing and a song of suicide haunt a Budapest restaurant in 'Gloomy Sunday'
By Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Posted: April 22, 2004 "Gloomy Sunday" has a mood and a magic about it that elicit emotion from the beginning and make an audience follow it down its curving and melancholy path. Strange, compelling and hard to classify, it's both a romance and a character study, and it's set against a historical backdrop. This German import covers a lot of ground in 114 minutes. "Gloomy Sunday" has a loose structure, which is particularly welcome after a steady diet of American films, whose endings are guaranteed from the first five minutes. Watching "Gloomy Sunday," one believes that it really might go anywhere, and that anywhere it goes will be interesting.

Baron Antoine-Henri de Jomini's "Art of War"
This massive work composed by Jomini was the premier military strategy composition of the 19th century. Even the works of Clausewitz were not studied quite as much as this teacher of the Napoleonic method of warfare . In fact, it was Jomini (perhaps more than any other strategist) who influenced the leadership of both the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

Off with his head!
On this day in 1460, Richard Plantagenet, the Duke of York, was defeated and killed by 18,000 Lancastrians at the Battle of Wakefield . Several days before, Richard had marched with the Earl of Salisbury to draw a large Lancastrian army from the vital city of York. Once Richard had reached the area, he and his army of approximately 8,000 men, took up a defensive position at Sandal Castle Inexplicably, Richard opened the gates of this impressive stronghold and attacked the Lancastrian force, even though he was (most likely) aware of its tremendous size. Some have claimed that Richard attacked because he felt that the element of surprise would win the day – others feel that Lancastrian sympathizers had misled the Duke as to the true composition of the opposing force. Regardless of his reasoning, the Yorkists were immediately surrounded and routed. Richard was killed during the battle and his head was placed atop the Micklegate Bar , the most important of York’s gateways.

    SPELLING
    Homonyms and Plurals
Homonyms are words that sound alike or nearly alike but have different meanings and different spellings: affect-effect, they're-their-there, the list goes on and on Creating plurals in English is usually quite simple: just add s to the end of the word. Sometimes, however, it isn't that easy and the rules can be a bit perplexing.
    Sounding It Out
Writers who try to rely too completely on the sound of English words for hints on how to spell often have trouble with some of the peculiar sound-spell combinations in the language. One apocryphal (apokrifil?) story tells about a girl who, when asked to spell "fish," wrote GHOT on the chalkboard. It makes perfect sense, of course, if it's the same "gh" we see in cough , the same "o" we hear in women , and the same "t" we hear in nation A thorough acquaintance with prefixes and endings and roots (see elsewhere in this section) will help some, and studying the way words are broken down into sound units will help also. It also helps to pronounce words correctly in the first place. It's hard to spell

Self-Correction and Rewriting of Student Compositions:
    The Correction Code
    by Nancy Marie Wood

After spending hours correcting student compositions, we are often disappointed when we return papers to our students, only to see them glance at their grade and tuck them away in a book or notebook. We may wonder what, if anything, they have learned from their work. In my years of teaching writing to intermediate and advanced learners of English as a second or foreign language, I have found that the use of a correction code to guide students in correcting their own errors makes writing more of a learning activity. Using the correction code does not make marking papers more efficient, but it does provide students with an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and to gain confidence in their ability to write. Sample Correction Code SYMBOL TYPE OF ERROR cap capitalization P punctuation SP spelling add a word optional number (singular or plural) SV subject-verb agreement VT verb tense VF verb form (gerund, participle, etc.

    INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE
Because today's computers can deliver exciting, high-quality graphics and sound, computer-assisted instruction can be extremely captivating. When teachers and students can interact with the materials, the quality of instruction can be significantly more effective than with traditional materials, such as worksheets. Many computerized lessons, for instance, make comparing one theme of a composition with another as simple as clicking on a button. Computerized lessons can be used as homework assignments and in class, with the group providing answers to be entered into the computer. You also can use the computer as a vehicle for presenting information. With computer-assisted lessons, students receive feedback and correction immediately upon demonstrating a misunderstanding. Eliminating the delay between the time the student completes homework and the time the work is returned is clearly beneficial.

our Website suggest how they can be applied in beginning recorder classes, "The characteristics of a good musician can be summarised as follows: 1. A well-trained ear
    2. A well-trained intelligence
    3. A well-trained heart
    4. A well-trained hand. All four must develop together, in constant equilibrium. As soon as one lags behind or rushes ahead, there is something wrong." He felt that only the finest musicians should be permitted to teach children, unlike the attitude at many American teacher-training institutions. The same approach works for instruments, but there are differences. You can't Prepare low "la," for example, by using it in different songs until you have actually taught the fingering for that note, but there are other activities that accomplish the same thing. You can have the class sing low "la," and then find the note on their recorders. The teacher can play a tune with the new note, and ask them to figure out what you are doing. (My students love that!)

INTRODUCTION by Katalin Fazekas SZAMALK Post-Secondary Vocational School, Budapest, Hungary fazekas@okk.szamalk.hu COMPUTER ENGLISH FOR EVERYDAY USE by Batri Blanka-Fazekas Katalin (Di-press, 2003) A new coursebook for computer users and IT vocational people has appeared on the Hungarian EFL book market. The authors – both involved in teaching IT English at vocational schools and IT colleges - have realized the lack of such a publication on the international market. With the first volume - the second is due in spring 2004 - they have intended to produce an English coursebook for false beginners or pre-intermediate students who study Information Technology and Computer Science, or work in the IT sector and want to improve their general and professional language skills in the context of IT. It can be used both in regular classes and distance education. There are 12 units in the book covering basic vocabulary for everyday communication and Computer English. The authentic texts for reading comprehension are taken from popular Internet web pages, manuals and advertisements. Each unit contains work on a mix of language skills and every 4
