The Frankfurt Fair is good for a small country like Hungary because it places Hungarian literature in the spotlight of the international book world, therefore prompting foreign translations of Hungarian books. Three hundred new translations have been published for the Fair, according to Katalin Budai, literary advisor at the Frankfurt '99 non profit organization (established by the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage to organize the Fair), which was possible because of a fund organized to boost translations of Hungarian literature. "Hungary was the first guest country ever able to produce so many titles," said Budai proudly. "It was a very good start for writers who aren't known yet in German and English speaking countries." Almost two thirds of the world's annual turnover in publishing is contracted at Frankfurt. The buying and selling of rights is one of the main activities, but the Fair is also important for keeping abreast of the international markets. "It's a huge market out there and Frankfurt was a key time to reach the international market," said David Kelly, sales and marketing manager of Central European University (CEU) Press, which specializes in publishing in the English language. "It was very important for the buying and selling of rights and if they have the right book and they do it properly, the rewards can be huge."

Numi-Torem Foundation for Finno-Ugristics A Short History of the Department The department's predecessor of title was founded in 1872, on the orders of Ágoston Trefort, Secretary of Education and Religious Affairs. The first professor was József Budenz (1836-1892) who came to Hungary from Germany where, at the University of Göttingen, he studied Indo-Germanic. Later he started studying "Altaistics" and this is how he ended up in Hungary. When the department was founded, Budenz was the director of The Hungarian Philological Seminar (from 1925 called The Institute of Hungarian Linguistics ) which for a long time enabled the work of our department. The most important result of Budenz's work was that he limited the bulk of languages related to Hungarian to only the Finno-Ugric languages. He was the one who put together the Finno-Ugric study material for future secondary school teachers of Hungarian. He also sent researchers such as; Bernát Munkácsi, Ignác Halász and Béla Vikár, to visit the peoples who spoke languages related to ours, and he especially took the teaching of Finnish seriously. Budenz was followed by József Szinnyei (1857-1943). Under Szinnyei´s directorship Fennic studies received special emphasis. Besides works in this field, in 1896 he published the important
