At the age of ten he received as a birthday present a diary; its white pages scared him. In his youth Kertész experienced the horrors of the Nazi system. Germans occupied Hungary in 1944 and began exterminating Jews and Gypsies. Kertész was deported together with 7,000 Hungarian Jews from Budapest to Auschwitz and from there to Buchenwald. "I am a nonbelieving Jew", Kertész has said in an interview. "Yet as a Jew I was taken to Auschwitz." There Kertész suddenly realized that he could be killed anywhere at any time. This existentialist moment become crucial for him as a writer. In 1945 he was liberated by the Allied forces. The Stranger was completed in 1965, but not published until 10 years later in a limited edition. The work met a wall of silence, perhaps because of the touchy subject of the book, the deportation of Jews, a shameful episode in Hungary's recent history. However, the novel started a trilogy, which continued in

Literature relationships between Hungary and Estonia Arvo Valton Affinity, above all, is being aware of affinity. Generally, the voice of blood starts to appeal if such awareness exists. A clearer awareness of affinity of Finno-Ugrian nations emerged only at the last century. First assumptions by linguists about affinity of Hungarian and Lappish languages were rather shocking for the most part of the Hungarian society. The knowledge that one or another Finno-Ugrian nation is not an exceptional relic in this world became one of the pivots of our self-consciousness probably only in this century. Providing actual support – no matter how moderate – to each other has turned into a practice only in the recent times. So far, a smaller nation’s eyes continue to be fixed with hope on a bigger nation. Generous care for one’s weaker sisters still remains a rarity, as well as cognition that supporting smaller ones makes us greater both in our and the world’s opinion. After the World War I, Hungary was one of the first countries to recognise the Republic of Estonia, though the whim of history was to have them on opposite sides in the battle. One of the first trade agreements of the young Estonian Republic was concluded with Hungary – notwithstanding that, earlier, tangible trade relations were rather modest. One of the reason, indeed, was the awareness of affinity. It is worth to note that the solidarity of Finno-Ugrian nations is based on the idea of importance of the proximity of languages rather than that of blood or race. This is probably the reason why numerous joint projects in the areas of language, literature, traditional art and education have been paid special attention.

Writing and Acting Against Censorship :
Hungarian Literature of Romania in the 1980's (excerpt) Faculty of Letters, Babes-Boliay University, Romania (more...) Since 1919, when it emerged as a separate cultural entity due to the annexation of Transylvania to Romania following WWI, the Hungarian literature of Romania has passed through several identity crises, balancing between elite innovation and the determination to reduce technicalities in order to promote culture as a fully understandable, social and political community message.
The presentation deals with two peculiar aspects of the reactive cultural code of that epoch: the fixed form of the sonnet in poetry, as a symbol of incarceration or prison, and the emergence of an "early medievalism" as dominant atmosphere in prose, subversively linked to the eternal territorial dispute between Romanians and Hungarians in Transylvania of who came first and who thereafter.
CHOOSING BETWEEN SOCIAL SERVICE AND INNOVATION
This romantic, although bitter and full of venom identity track-and-field event was suddenly interrupted with the new Romanian constitution of 1923, which replaced the old vote system based on qualification with the new procedure of universal balloting, allowing a vast array of non-voting population to reach the urns. The strategic judicial landmark reversed the political and economical balance of the region, creating the premises of promoting Romania as a "national" state: a rather controversial label for a multiethnic society, strong enough to be still included in Romania's postcommunist Constitution of 1991.

IU Bloomington Central Eurasian Studies Dual Central Eurasian Studies MA and School of Public and Environmental Affairs MPA Degree Requirements The Department of Central Eurasian Studies (CEUS) and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) jointly offer a three-year program that qualifies students for a dual master’s degree. The dual degree program is a 60 credit hour program which addresses the demand for specialists who combine expertise in public policy and management and area studies expertise in the countries of Eurasia. Students must separately apply to and be accepted into both the CEUS Master of Arts degree program and the SPEA Master of Public Affairs degree program. Indicate on both application forms that you are applying for the CEUS-SPEA dual degree. Because CEUS and SPEA are in separate schools within Indiana University, students will be officially enrolled in only one school at a time. Students will alternate school affiliation so that students will be formally "housed" in each school for three semesters. School affiliation in no way restricts course enrollment. Students can concurrently enroll in CEUS and SPEA courses.

Spokesman for the "Literary Nation"
The name of the Hungarian literary historian Lóránt Czigány, who has lived in London since 1956, is well known in intellectual circles in Hungary and even better known to the Hungarian literary and artistic diaspora in the West. He is one of those émigré writers and scholars who early recognized that they may have their own particular tasks in nurturing the culture of the nation, and that in performing these they should engage in dialogue with representatives of the cultural life in Hungary. This was a recognition shared by others as well - the better part of the young intellectuals who, after the repression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, left for the West where they have shaped their life and work in the service of this idea. As a young student at the University of Szeged Czigány participated in the revolutionary events as a member of the National Guard. After the Soviet intervention he fled to England, where he studied at Oxford and London. He worked in the British Museum Library, where he was responsible for Hungarian books and built up a high standard collection. He was a guest professor in the United States in Berkeley; he worked for the BBC World Service, Hungarian Section and contributed to The Times; for a short time, during the term of the first post-1989 democratic government, he served as a diplomat at the Hungarian Embassy in London. Some of his writings portray those masters of Hungarian literature in the West who have now received their due recognition in Hungary -

The speech of
Prof. Árpád Bernáth, German Studies professor of the University of Szeged, managing director of the Frankfurt ’99 Non-profit Organisation
On the occasion of the press conference on 8 th June, in Frankfurt The Book Fair as a cultural policy event
A former socialist country, Hungary will be introduced as the seeded guest in the Frankfurt Book Fair between 13 th and 18 th October 1999. It is not accidentally that Hungary was given this role. After ten years of opening the borders between Austria and Hungary it is more and more obvious that there was no monolithic block behind the iron curtain. The cultural tidings looking back on many centuries and the current situation and state of economy show varied degrees of competitiveness and readiness for integration amongst the countries of the former soviet empire. In 1999 Hungary alongside with Poland and the Czech Republic can state the same as the German Federal Republic did after forty years of democratic improvement in 1989: the country lies bounded to the West and open to the East - in the heart of Europe. For the first time everything will be under the same roof in Hall 3.0

HUNGARY’S LITERARY PRESENCE IN GERMANY IN 1999
here are two great anniversaries giving frame to the central theme of the Frankfurt Book Fair that is entitled “Hungary without Boundaries”. In the year 2000 Hungary celebrates the millennium of the formation of the state – it was a thousand years ago that Pope Sylvester sent the crown to Saint Stephen, our first king. Hungarians, that in major part were still heathens, were then admitted to belong to the Christian Europe. The other jubilee could be summed up by the expression “ten years of democracy and European integration”. After communist leader János Kádár resented his position in April 1989 the gradual and sometimes conflict-evoking formation of democratic institutions and political parties as well as the gradual decomposition of the communist dictatorship started. The Hungarian Republic was proclaimed on 23 rd October 1989 and the first free elections after those in 1947 were run in March/April 1990.
