The Babel Guide to Hungarian Literature
Ray Keenoy, Vivienne Menkes-Ivry + Zsuzsanna Varga
Boulevard 2001 A book review by Danny Yee Most of the Babel Guide to Hungarian Literature some 100 pages is taken up by reviews of some fifty novels and anthologies. This is followed by two longer pieces, on poetry and drama available in English, and a twenty page "database" of Hungarian literature in translation. Works from the nineteenth century through to the present are covered, with some authors featuring several times. The reviews are excellently done, informative rather than flashy and accessible to those unfamiliar with Hungarian (or Central European) literature. They provide background on authors and historical settings, touch on content, and include brief quotes to give an idea of the style. A drawback is that the reviews are ordered alphabetically by author, with no table of contents or any other hint as to where to start reading: I ended up reading them in pretty much random order. One option would have been an overview of Hungarian fiction along the lines of those for drama and poetry, with cross-references to the individual reviews; a timeline or chronology would also have been helpful. The "database" is just that an indigestible three-column printout of structured data, without even any whitespace between records! This really should have been put on the web somewhere as a spreadsheet, not jammed into print.

LÓRÁNT CZIGÁNY
A HISTORY OF HUNGARIAN LITERATURE
From the Earliest Times to the mid-1970's
CONTENTS Dante: Paradiso XIX: 142-3
This is the first full-length history of Hungarian literature to be written in English since before the First World War. Six years in preparation, it is the work of one of the few authorities living outside Hungary. It explores the rich variety of Hungarian literature from the beginnings to the emerging authors of the 1970s, and is the first work to include material on writers who have left their country for political reasons. The author gives a general outline of the stages of growth of Hungarian literature with brief descriptions of the major intellectual movements, a critical survey of all the major authors, and short sketches of the minor ones, together with some indication of their more significant works. He includes detailed studies of major masterpieces, and biographies whenever the life-work of a particular author warrants it. Special attention is paid to literary relations between Hungary and the United States and Britain, and the annotated bibliography includes pioneering work on criticism published in British and American periodicals on Hungarian authors over the last 150 years. There is also a glossary of Hungarian literary and geographical terms. Literature in Hungary has for long been regarded as a vehicle for national survival and social improvement. The author believes, however, that it is not solely a record of the collective experience of a people whose chief claim is that they have preserved their national identity throughout the vicissitudes of history, but also a distinct voice in the description of the human condition in all its diversity. Accordingly, the author unravels from the national preoccupations and idiosyncracies a Hungarian literature less introspective, less exclusively concerned with national issues, than previously assumed.

HUNGARIAN LITERATURE ONLINE.
A nice site showcasing Hungarian literature in English translation, with pages on authors and their works; I haven't had time to delve very far into it, but I'm intrigued by Orsolya Karafiáth , "a vamp and a poet of great formal talent in one person," who "writes post-postmodern poems with romantic, sometimes sentimental and melodramatic overtones." Here's "fission": i cannot choose your touching any more
the touchings we have left are without truth
moments off-guard - what are we touching for
you gave me up and now i give up too
instead i rather choose your distantness
while still your distantness will seek me out
as an exchange please take my distantness
you've yielded me i too am yielding now
i opt for your regard whatever cold
forgiving aspects your regard may show
you too want my regard for after all you've let me go and now i too let go  there's no lovelier split no easier one give up while i too still am giving up Oh, and there's an " Online Dictionary " search box on the upper right that gives quite impressive results. (Via

    Hungarian (Magyar)
Hungarian is a Uralic language with about 15 million speakers in Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and Slovakia. There are also many people of Hungarian origin in the UK and other European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia. Hungarian is a highly inflected language in which nouns can have up to 238 possible forms. It is related to Mansi, an Ob-Ugric language with about 4,000 speakers who live in the eastern Urals, and Khanty or Ostyak, the other Ob-Ugric language which is spoken by about 15,000 people in the Ob valley of western Siberia. The earliest Hungarian literature, dating from the 12th century, was in Latin. Texts in Hungarian started to appear during the 13th century. The first book to be printed in Hungarian was published in 1527 in Krakow, Poland. Hungarian literature flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Ady is best-known for his daring works celebrating sensual love, but he also wrote religious and revolutionary poems. His expression was radical in form, language and content, mixing eroticism, politics, and biblical style and images with apocalyptic visions. oh I have lived a disgusting life,

Between the years 1908 and 1919, he was closely associated with the journal Nyugat , which kept him in the public eye. The journal published works from some of the best writers of the era, and took a major role in fostering the emergence of modern Hungarian literature.
