Visit HNC forum Work on the Hungarian National Corpus (HNC) started in 1998 at the Department of Corpus Linguistics of the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) under the supervision of Tamás Váradi . The objective was to create a 100-million-word balance reference corpus of present-day Hungarian.
What is a corpus?
A corpus is a collection of written or spoken linguistical data. The texts are selected and classified according to certain criteria. A corpus does not necessarily contain whole texts and is not only a repository of texts: it contains their bibliographical data and marks the structural units (paragraphs, sentences). Next to each word, the code of its category is indicated. HNC wishes to be a representative general-aim corpus of present-day standard Hungarian. Morphosyntactic annotation is provided by using automatic methods with a general precision of about 97.5%, i.e. 2.5% of all wordforms has an erroneous analysis. Higher precision could only have been achieved by manual annotation, which was not feasible for such a large amount of data.

Hungarian is a Uralic language with about 15 million speakers in Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and Slovakia. There are also many people of Hungarian origin in the UK and other European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia. Hungarian is a highly inflected language in which nouns can have up to 238 possible forms. It is related to Mansi, an Ob-Ugric language with about 4,000 speakers who live in the eastern Urals, and Khanty or Ostyak, the other Ob-Ugric language which is spoken by about 15,000 people in the Ob valley of western Siberia. The earliest Hungarian literature, dating from the 12th century, was in Latin. Texts in Hungarian started to appear during the 13th century. The first book to be printed in Hungarian was published in 1527 in Krakow, Poland. Hungarian literature flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Overview of the Hungarian Language
Hungarian or Magyar (pronounced "Mawdyar") is the mother tongue of the ten million inhabitants of Hungary, as well as another four million people in neighboring countries mostly Romanian Transylvania to the East, Slovakia to the North, and Croatia and Yugoslavia to the South. One million speakers of Hungarian are scattered around the world in various emigrant communities, especially in North America and Australia.
Hungarian is an Ugric language of the Finno-Ugric subgroup of the Uralic language family. Originally from a large region in Central European Russia, Finno-Ugric peoples started migrating in different directions around 3000 BC. In the first centuries of the Christian era, the Ugrians began a slow migration westward towards present-day Hungary. They arrived in the ninth century, making contact with the Bulgar Turks and the Khazars. In this way, the largest Finno-Ugric nation came into existence. Constituting an enclave surrounded by speakers of Germanic, Slavic, Romanian and Turkic languages, Hungary was linguistically a very isolated nation. The closest related languages are the Ostyak and Vogul languages of Siberia, spoken in a region more than 2,000 miles away.

About the Hungarian Language

The origin of the Hungarian language is one of the several mysteries that surround the early history of the Magyars. For long it has been believed that Hungarian belongs to the Ugric branch of the Uralic language family based on a relatively large number of words (~300-400) of Finno-Ugric origin in the language. Hungarian, like other Finno-Ugric languages is agglutinative, which means word meanings are modified by adding different and multiple endings or suffixes to the words, rather than using prefixes like, for example, in English. On the other hand, several linguists believe that Hungarian is related to Turkic, rather than to Finno-Ugric languages. Turkic languages are also agglutinative, but they are classified into the Altaic language family. They form a sister group with the Finno-Ugric language family, and supposedly both groups originated from the same Ural-Altaic proto-language, although this idea has also been challanged.
Others try to relate Hungarian to Sumerian, a language that was spoken in the Middle-East some nine thousand years ago. These ideas have been rejected by scientists for several reasons. The most important of these is the claim that most similarities are only superficial and that these words are not genetically related (i.e. not coming from the same ancestral words). The claimed similarities are mostly based on transcriptions of words, and not on actual phonetics of how those words were pronounced. Nevertheless, it is an undeniable fact that an ancient segment of Hungarian that has been preserved mainly in child songs, lullabies and verses, shows some degree of similarity to Sumerian. Many linguists, however, regard these old remains of an "ancient language" as of unknown origin.
