Welcome to the Department of Finno-Ugrian Studies!
The Department of Finno-Ugrian Studies at the University of Helsinki is one of the biggest university institutions in the world in its field, and its aims and activities cover extensively the whole Finno-Ugrian (Uralic) language family, providing instruction and research in the following subjects.
1A Finnic languages (with a special emphasis on the closest relatives of the Finnish language: Karelian, Vepsian, Ingrian, Votian, Estonian, Livonian) traditionally constitute a subject of fruitful comparative research that is also essential for a better knowledge of the history of the Finnish language.
1B Finnic languages: Estonian language and culture. This alternative to general Finnic studies, officially created in 1994, has enjoyed an increasing popularity. A basic course in Estonian language is obligatory for all students of Finnish.
2A Finno-Ugrian language studies: comprises both traditional comparative Finno-Ugristics and other research of the Uralic languages (more distantly related to Finnish).

The Hungarian Society of Victoria welcomes you to its pages. The Society is located in beautiful Victoria, the "City of Gardens", on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Hungarians have a long history in British Columbia. They first came here to work the fertile farmlands in the late nineteenth century and then came in greater numbers after the second world war and the October 1956 revolution. They have always been effective contributors to Canadian society. Victoria is a multicultural community. People from every part of the world, including Hungarians, have put their own cultural, political, educational and social marks on this flowerlike city.

Radio Nederland Wereldomroep / RN Music Reason for this project
In the second half of 2004, the Netherlands will be chair of the European Union, which by then will have expanded to include ten new member countries. The Dutch government has reserved extra monies to accentuate this fact, among others in the area of culture. Gaudeamus, the Theater Instituut Nederland (TIN), the Dutch Jazz Connection (DJC), the Nationaal Pop Instituut (NPI) and Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (RNW) feel that during the chair period it is very important to present contemporary performing arts from the Netherlands in those countries. Because of the cultural activities we all have previously cultivated in Hungary, interest in Dutch culture has grown among both programmers and the public. This is noticeable from the interest exhibited by programmers in specific productions from the Netherlands and the readiness of the Hungarians to make a financial contribution to them. Budapest is the springboard from which various parts of the Dutch Cultural Season programme can be brought to surrounding countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria and Croatia. We would like to emphasize here that some items on the programme of the Dutch Cultural Season will also be included in the Hungarian cultural presentation in the Netherlands in 2004.
