The Hungarian presence in the United States was established by the large mass of rural immigrants in the three decades before WWI. These immigrants treasured their Hungarian identity. Because of their continued preservation of their Hungarian identity, their assimilation was not easy. Hungarians rather formed their own communities than join already made American ones. Interstingly enough, their American born children assimilated rapidly, and were eager to dispose of their "simple" Hungarian background. It took until the 1960's forthose of Hungarian descent to once again embrace their culture. The traditional Hungarian dishes are full of delicious flavors and aromas. Dishes are flavourful, spicy and often rather heavy. People with a sensitive stomach, should be careful. Flavors of Hungarian dishes are based on old traditions in spicing and preparation methods. The ingredients are produced by local agriculture and husbandry. Paprika and garlic is to be found everywhere. In the autumn, an interesting view is the strings of red paprika (unground red pepper) hung on the white walls of the houses in the neighbourhood of Kalocsa, a town along the Danube. In other words, it has become a flagship representative of Hungarian culture internationally. Despite this fact, the genre fails to enjoy due respect, in the financial and moral sense. During the past 40 years, artists playing jazz or high-end pop music have received little or no official recognition. To illustrate the priorities of the state's financial support programs, the National Cultural Fund (NKA), the only funding mechanism for musicians aside from Hungary's Ministry of Culture, will spend HUF 300 million out of a total HUF 6 billion available to finance music this year alone. Gyöngyi Végh Since my involvement in the project I have tried my hands at many things, experimented with lots of teaching ideas and materials and transgressed many boundaries defining different areas of expertise. I started work in the project as a teacher of English, whose role has expanded to challenge traditional definitions of other roles as the project proceeded. It wasn’t long before I realised that I am an educator just as much as I am a teacher. The expansion of my role did not stop there: I have become an amateur ethnographer, a materials writer, a graphic designer and most recently a conference presenter. All of this is daunting but empowering as well. At the outset, the main aim of the project was to infuse meaningful content into EFL teaching: literature and culture seemed just right to provide the necessary content. We as practising teachers and project members, however, soon realised that meaningful content cannot be taught in the EFL classroom at secondary school level without taking on the responsibility of educating young people. Since this realisation, we have all regarded our aims at least threefold: linguistic, cultural and educational. There might be other teachers who think about the aims of EFL teaching at secondary school level similarly, but based on our experience as teachers in this sector, we have found that linking these aims and regarding them as of equal importance are still rather unusual concepts.

Stephen had himself crowned in 1000 with insignia of royalty granted by Pope Sylvester II, and completed the state-building process started by his father. Stephen founded ten episcopates and several monasteries, had churches built, set up the administration of royal counties, crushed those tribal leaders who were seeking to maintain paganism and opposed Europeanisation, but also defended his country from attacks from the west. Stephen led his people to become a nation of Christian Europe and created the Kingdom of Hungary: his successor, King Ladislas (L¡szl³), made him-together with the early deceased crown prince Imre and Bishop Gell©rt, who died as a martyr in the pagan uprising of 1046-saints of the Christian Church.

Welcome to Kecskemét Geographically speaking, Kecskemét lies in the middle of the sandy plain between the rivers Danube and Tisza, and equidistant (85 km in each case) from Budapest in the north and Szeged in the south. With its population now in excess of 105.000, Kecskemét assumed the status of principal town in the county of Bács-Kiskun back in 1950. Archaelogical evidence - for example, a Bronze Age urn burial ground - indicates that earlier civilisations settled in the immediate vicinity of present day Kecskemét as far back as 3000 years ago. During the course of the Great Migrations this region was successively occupied by different peoples, starting with the Scythians, then the Jasyges (a Sarmatian people originally from the shores of the Black Sea), later the Huns, followed by the Goths, and finally the nomadic Avars. Avarian graves were discovered during building operations on the site of the present day Piarist College. A document of 1368 mentions Kecskemét as a market town. In the year 1439 the town was given to the Turks in pledge by the then Queen, Elisabeth and thus fell into the hands of the Pasha governing Buda, and later into those of the Sultan himself. During the Turkish occupation the inhabitants dealt with animal keeping and there were several different craftsmen in the town, too. The villages of the surrounding area were destroyed during the fights with the Turks but due to the special rights that the town had, such as cattle trade, the town had a significant development. After the destruction of the villages the market towns obtained huge territories.

His father, Laszlo Birinyi Sr., had led the boy and his family out of Hungary during World War II. After spending a tumultuous few years navigating the geographic and political uncertainty of Europe, they finally found security in America. "Like so many Eastern Europeans, we sought to escape the conflicts," Birinyi Jr. said. "We were focused on survival." As refugees, the Birinyi family traveled through Europe, trying to find a safe place to settle. Even after the war ended, they chose not to return to Hungary, unwilling to become a part of the Communist regime that had taken control of the nation. But prior to the beginning of the Cold War, European host nations wanted refugees to return to their homes. The Birinyis received an offer of sponsorship from the Church World Service giving them the alternative to immigrate to America. The younger Birinyi grew up in Pennsylvania, arriving in Chapel Hill in 1962 as a freshman.

The draft of the Hungarian Culture Strategy was completed in July. In the fall, Culture Minister Istv¡n Hiller initiated a public professional debate about the draft. The concept, which is in in line with the EU program of 2013, was created by a committee of 9 and a group of experts. The project is headed by economist L¡szl³ Hars¡nyi, the chairman of the National Culture Program. We spoke with him about the birth of the concept and its main principles. The work started in coordination with Culture Minister Hiller. The concept intends to put cultural thinking into a perspective, Hars¡nyi said. The current draft was compiled by representatives of different cultural fields, mostly social researchers and experts. The draft was completed by July, and in September the minister initiated a public debate about it. The committee set the period of 2007 to 2013 as the time horizon of the cultural strategy, since in line with the planning program of the EU, the Second National Development Plan is also scheduled for this period.

I would not go out with a man who had a different opinion about it. That is partly why I don't fall in love with Hungarian men, they would not appreciate it. They appreciate it as a friend, but they would not consider starting something with me. Not that it bothers me, but it's something you know straight away, they would not even try to flirt with you." The woman quoted above believed the only possibility of finding an egalitarian relationship, was to find a Western European or American man to live with, either abroad or in Hungary. Her experience of Western men was that they are more interested in equality and more supportive of modern gender roles than Hungarian men, and that Western men would appreciate her intelligence. Besides, she saw Hungarian men as spoiled and immature. Changes in gender relations are not to be seen as a result of the transition in the post-communist societies. Rather, they are part of the transition. The conditions under which individuals live are affected by the structural changes from "communist societies" to "democratic systems" and "market economies." However, the way individuals act and perceive what is happening is also a part of the transition. Individual lives are "structures in operation" (Lindquist, 1994:7). In periods of massive societal transformation, where old structures are dissolving, individuals have more influence on creating new frames for living. "Individual action and the unplanned have more weight than usual, relative to system constraints, in shaping outcomes" (Verdery, 1992:3).
