HUNGARIANS IN AMERICA
H ungarian emigrants happy to have found freedom and a chance for a fresh start, worked hard, studied, and quickly became good citizens. The receiving countries were happy with the newcomers who were eager to give of their talent and experience and help build their young adopted country. More than half a dozen earned Nobel prizes for their new country. Life in America would probably be different without St. Louis Post-Dispatch publisher Joseph Pulitzer , Paramount Studios' founder Adolph Zukor , conductors Antal Dorati George Solti and George Szell , actresses Zsa Zsa Gabor and Mariska Hargitay , actors Tony Curtis Peter Lorre Bela Lugosi and comedian Ernie Kovacs , jazz man Gabor Szabo , football heroes Joe Namath Larry Csonka and Don Shula , and financial giants Andrew Sarlos and George Soros , the philanthropist. Although the composer, Bela Bartok did not become an American citizen, he spent the last year of his life in New York. Three famous physicists attended the same school in Budapest, went to America, helped to win the war and, for better or worse, changed history forever. Leo Szilard Eugene Wigner and Edward Teller are recognized for their work in the field of atomic and nuclear energy.

An Essay on Cultural Identity in Post-socialist Hungary The quote which introduced this essay appeared in the context of a culture war, often referred to as a Kulturkampf, which has flared up a number of times since 1989. PRINCIPLES OF PRESENTING HUNGARIAN CULTURE AT THE FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR he cultural heritage of Hungary is part of Western culture and has common history with it. Therefore, at the Frankfurt Book Fair we would like to present the place of Hungary within the cultural context of Europe and we wish to highlight the fertile artistic exchange between Hungary and the rest of Europe. On the other hand, by presenting a wide range of artistic works, we would like to bring into spotlight some faces of Hungarian culture still unknown abroad. Thus, the organisers achieving the motto of the central theme – Hungary without boundaries – in two distinct manners. Hungary is open outwards, to the neighbouring peoples and cultures and at the same time it is open towards accepting all artistic trends and currents. Hungarian literature will therefore be represented at the Book Fair not only by well-known names, but also through younger authors, who are less recognised abroad. Beside a rich offer of new fiction, a variety of other literary genres will also represent Hungary. Hungarian fine arts will also be comprehensively represented. Amongst others, selected works of a great number of contemporary artists, a

With Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff For the story behind the story... Friday, May 6, 2005 3:58 p.m. EDT EU Fears U.S.-Google World Dominance Europeans have long bemoaned the influence of Hollywood movies on their culture. Now plans by Google Inc. to create a massive digital library have triggered such strong fears in Europe about Anglo-American cultural dominance that one critic is warning of a "unilateral command of the thought of the world."
For Europeans, the fear is that the continent's contribution to the pillars of recorded knowledge will be crushed by a profit-oriented California company - and may end up presenting a U.S.-centric version of the world's literary legacy. Story Continues Below Google's ambitions are grand - if a bit more modest than the hostile corporate takeover of the tiller of world literature that many critics seem to be imagining. The project, announced in December, involves scanning millions of books at the libraries of four universities - Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and the University of Michigan - as well as the New York Public Library and putting them online. It will take years to complete.

Research Centre of Multilingualism Hungarian in Austria 1. General Information on the language group 1.1 Linguistic, geographic and economic description Hungarian in Burgenland is distinguished from the standard variety by regionalisms and by the phenomenon of linguistic change associated with linguistic isolation. All the Hungarians in Burgenland are bilingual in Hungarian and German. The regional exodus and the ageing population characterises the present situation of the Hungarians in Burgenland. Two thirds of Hungarians in Burgenland (in comparison with 40% of the Germanophones of Burgenland) are of retirement age. The proportion of employed Hungarians in Burgenland in the self-employed professional sector or employed as skilled workers is less than 50% of the rate for the Germanophones in the region. 1.2 General History of the Region and of the language After the battle of Lechfeld in 955 which signified the end of the Hungarian expansion associated with the reign of Otto the Great, they stabilised in the Carpate basin. In the eleventh century trade frontiers were established and the Hungarians of Burgenland descend from the population stabilised at this time. Burgenland place names contain the elements 'Schutzen' or 'Wart' ( as in Obserschutzen, Unterwart etc.) constituting the linguistic testimony of that historic period. Following the Ottoman wars, the devastated country was occupied by Protestant Germans fleeing the religious wars and by Croats fleeing their side of the Turkish oppression. The Hungarians pertain to three religions: Catholic, Evangelic and reformed. The Hungarians of Burgenland during the historic process abandoned contact with their people of origin and have lived for 450 years as have the Croats of Burgenland in linguistic islands.

EFFORTS to establish a museum to represent the traditions and values of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia stretch back decades. The history, popular culture and customs of Hungarians living in Slovakia are many and varied. However, the question was always how to approach the representation of this varied and rich experience. As an initial step, a documentation centre for Hungarian culture was founded at the Brämer mansion, near Bratislava, in July 2001. This independent department formed a link between Hungarian culture and Slovak institutions. In July 2002 the documentation centre became the Museum of Hungarian Culture. The main task of the museum is to represent the culture of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia through collections, exhibitions and research.

AN INITIATIVE from the Hungarian Culture Intstitute, Hungarian Culture Days, will present eleven events, ranging from art exhibitions, theatre and dance shows to literary readings and film screenings, at nine venues in Bratislava, October 21 to 25. "We hope that the week brings meaningful experiences for the public in Bratislava - one that will foster mutual understanding between our two nations," said the institute's director, Éva Czimbalmosné Molnár. Marianne Wieber's fashion show, Costumes of Thousand-year History, will open Hungarian Culture Days at 18:00 at the Primate's Palace. The fifty or so robes, mapping the fashion trends from the arrival of Hungarians to the Carpathian valley up to the 19th century, will then be exhibited at the nearby Town's Museum until November 25. Among other performances, visitors can hear the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra give a ceremonious concert on October 23, Hungarian National Holiday, at the Slovak Philharmonic.

Hungary recognised the Republic of Estonia on 24 February 1921 and accredited Mihály Jungerti as its first Ambassador to Estonia in 1924. From 1924-1928, the Hungarian Ambassador resided in Tallinn, but in 1928 the Embassy was moved to Helsinki. Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Hungary were restored on 2 September 1991. After the restoration of diplomatic relations, the Hungarian Ambassadors to Estonia have been Béla Jávorszky (1991-1994), György Krausz (1995-1998) and Jószef Vig (1999). Hungary appointed Béla Jávorszky as Ambassador to Estonia in September 1999. He resided in Tallinn, where the Embassy was officially opened in November 1999. Presently, Hungary is represented in Estonia by Ambassador László Nikicser
, who presented his credentials to President Arnold Rüütel in February 2003. Hungary has had two Honorary Consuls in Estonia since 1994: Mall Hellam in Tallinn and Ago Künnap in Tartu. Estonian Ambassadors to Hungary have been Toivo Tasa (1995-1999) and Mart Laanemäe (1999-2001), both residing in Vienna.
