Maintaining national identity
Small ethnic communities usually struggle to retain a distinct cultural identity. Immediately after their arrival, Hungarian refugees tended to marry other Hungarians, but by as early as 1959, many were marrying non-Hungarians. This contributed to their rapid integration. The retention of language and culture has been difficult in mixed New Zealand–Hungarian households, particularly because the community has not been replenished by further significant migrations since the refugees arrived after 1956.
Clubs and activities
Existing associations were reinvigorated by the arrival of the 1956 Hungarians. To welcome new arrivals, new clubs were also formed in the main centres by Hungarians already in New Zealand. However, most clubs folded in the 1970s. Mistrust within the Hungarian community, divided by political and religious beliefs, contributed to the demise of the Wellington club. Interest in joining Hungarian associations revived in the mid-1980s. In 2003, cultural groups existed in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Community activities continue to be popular. They include receiving overseas visitors and celebrating Hungary’s national day. Specialist radio programmes are broadcast on Access Radio and Planet FM. There are Hungarian language classes, and a bulletin

Hello and welcome! I hope you find this page both informative and useful. Please use the wav. files . . . they are there for you to download! The original language page was getting far too cluttered, so I moved over some of the information on to this new page. It has the pronuncation info on Numbers Days of the Week Months of the Year , as well as Words and Phrases . Please enjoy, and feel free to download any of these wav. files! Note: All files are less than 50 Kb unless there is a beside it.

Here are the pronunciation of Hungarian Numbers nulla (noo-loh) egy (aed-gy) kettõ (kett-eu) (ha-rom) négy (naed-gy) (urt) hat (hot) (hayt) nyolc (ny-olts) kilenc (kee-lents) (teez)
After learing the numbers 1-10, Hungarian numbers become quite simple. Just learn the prefix to the number and add on th extra (e.g., In English Twenty + Three = Twentythree). Given is an example number for each multiple of ten - it's easy, you'll catch on! If there are any irregularities, I will give them.

Gergely Prõhle
"The Task of Cultural Policy is to Create Markets" From a speech given by the Administrative Under-Secretary in the Hungarian Ministry for Cultural Heritage at the conference "The Value and Price of National Culture in the European Union", arranged by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the monthly Beszélõ this spring. Hungary’s entry into the European Union will not only have economic conse- quences, for entry will create a new situation for the country in virtually all fields of life, including culture. The question is how well we can predict and prepare for the new circumstances, and what changes are necessary in order to stay on track for EU-membership. The EU does not lay down detailed rules or restrictions concerning culture. Paragraph 128 of the Maastricht Treaty states that the EU supports cultural concepts which strengthen common European awareness. The various aid and grant programmes have also been drawn up with this aim in mind. But it is not easy to conform to such broad and vague conditions. At the same time, we surely cannot be expected to guess what these general terms are supposed to mean. I would therefore be delighted if those EU programmes that are already open to us were to contain more specific criteria so that we could judge which cultural activities would qualify for EU support. But what is even more important is for us to concentrate on, and work out, our own strategy of moving culture onto the offensive. By this I refer to an aspect of EU membership which is of considerable importance economically, despite being only indirectly related to the interests of the economy. At the end of the 20th century, the task of cultural policy must surely be to create markets for culture as well. If we look at our eventual EU membership from this perspective, then accession could mean a substantial expansion of the market for Hungarian culture. This is not to say that the spread of Hungarian culture abroad has been hindered or impeded in any way up to now. There is, however, reason for us to believe that Hungary’s EU-membership will create a new attitude towards the country, not only in foreign customers for culture, but also in the general European thinking. Hungarian culture will be interpreted as part of the European heritage to a much higher degree than ever before. This is the new situation we have to prepare for.

The history of Hungary in two pages
Like all countries of the world, Hungary had many important battles, wars, revolutions, extraordinary men and women in its history. However to show you all of them, that would take another website, so here is a brief outline of what happened in the last two milleniums which shaped the country that is today: Hungary. The area where today Hungary lies has been inhabited for half a million years according to the findings. In the copper and bronze ages different folks lived here in tribes and they already used the fourwheel cart and they were familiar with the domestication of animals.
In the first century AD Roman legions conquered the areas west of the Danube from the Celts, and made it their own province under the name of Pannonia. At this point the Danube was the border of the Roman Empire. In the next four hundred years they established a flourishing civilization that has left its traces in nearly all Transdanubian cities, and Budapest.
The roman city, Aquincum can be seen as the predecessor of Budapest, of which the ruins can still be seen today. The empire of the Romans came to an end when the stronger army of the Huns attacked them in the 4th century AD and they withdrew to their southern territories. After the Huns several other tribes occupied the area, the Goths, Longobards and Avarians, among others, before the Hungarian settlers setlled down here permanently in the 9th century.

    C S A R D A S:
    Erosion or Survival?
The Culture of the Hungarians of the Vojvodina Gusztav Kosztolanyi During the Kosovo crisis the attention of the world's media focused on the Hungarian minority of the Vojvodina and on how its fate might influence the behaviour and attitudes of one of the newest members of NATO, namely Hungary. Many column inches were devoted to the subject of what might happen if the Vojvodinian Hungarians were to be attacked by NATO forces, if they were to be the next in line for a campaign of ethnic cleansing or retaliation actions aimed at causing maximum discomfort to Hungary. That they formed a vulnerable target seemed clear in everyone's minds. Now that the conflict is over, interest appears to have waned with the Hungarians of the Vojvodina left, quite literally, to pick up the pieces. As Jozsef Kasza, President of the Association of Vojvodinian Hungarians, pointed out in an interview in July (See Magyar Nemzet , 8 July 1999 in the supplement on minorities): The fact that the country is in ruins and that in many areas everything was reduced to rubble doesn't interest them (Milosevic and his political clique). Nor do they bother themselves with the fact that the factories and institutions are out of commission and that the number of young people who wish to leave the country will soon reach 40%. The Hungarians of the Vojvodina are on a holding pattern. My feeling is that those who stayed behind immediately before the war or during the war do not wish to leave. In terms of numbers, the community did not incur huge losses, but the hopeless situation, the lack of prospects are potentially very dangerous. This continues to be true in spite of the recent and valuable help given to us by the homeland (that is, Hungary) in making the world familiar with the problems we face. We never experienced such vigorous diplomatic efforts either in the era of the Antall or that of the Horn governments.

    Thousand Years of Hungarian Culture
For centuries, the Hungarians wandered across the steppes of Eastern Europe before they came to the Carpathian Basin, the site of the former Avar empire, which was to become their final homeland. Following the Hungarian Conquest in 896 under Prince Árpád, the Hungarians rapidly left behind their nomadic lifestyle, dominated by animal herding, to the cultivation of land. When the defeat at Augsburg in 955 at the hands of Otto the Great (later Holy Roman Emperor) forced them to abandon their western forays, the Hungarians—this time on the initiative of Grand Prince Géza began to turn towards the nations and culture of Western Christendom. In 973, Géza, whom Western chroniclers referred to as king (‘rex’), sent a high-ranking delegation to the German Estates at Quedlinburg; invited to his court St Adalbert, the bishop of Prague, who was later killed by pagan Prussians—members of a western Slavic tribe—on the Baltic coast; made a contribution to the founding of the Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma, named after Saint Martin; and had himself christened, while at the same time maintaining existing pagan rites. To mark the entry of Hungary into the European Union this year a number of cultural events are being held in Britain, of which two are exhibitions. The first exhibition, entitled A Celebration of Hungarian Gold and Silver, is on view at the Gilbert Collection in Somerset House in London until February 1. The intention is to show the diversity of Hungarian metalwork through examples from various eras and regions. Because of their location near the crossroads of Europe and the Islamic world, Hungarian craftsmen took inspiration from many different cultures. The earliest work in the show is a Scythian running stag (illustrated below) made of gold and dating from the sixth century B.C. Other gold artifacts, mainly medieval, include a number of ecclesiastical objects such as a thirteenth-century gold cross encrusted with pearls and precious stones.
